IsiXhosa insect names from the Eastern Cape, South Africa

We present a list of isiXhosa names for a wide diversity of South African insects, and their English translations and scientific names, to contribute to bridging the knowledge gap between rural development workers and isiXhosa speakers. We interviewed 51 people in their homes at eight sites across the Eastern Cape and also included words from a published dictionary. We found 151 insect names, and categorized them into personal, dialectal and standard categories. Response-frequency distributions of the categories of names showed that the dialectal and standard lists were essentially complete. Sample accumulation curves showed levelling-off within sites and across the whole study, demonstrating that samples were adequate. The literal translations of some names show that isiXhosa speakers relate insects either to people, to their habitat and/or to their behaviour. The list can contribute to the standardization of knowledge of insects' indigenous names in South Africa for a variety of practical applications such as agricultural training and health services

The weak to strong state involvement and political accountability levels schema

The propositionis that socio-economic development from local to national levels often straddles at least four pathways that are driven by two main variables:the relative strength or weakness of (1) state (and government) involvementin the management of public affairs and resources and (2) the mechanisms for ensuring political accountability. The four pathways, with associated attributes, have presented opportunities or challenges that have promoted or collapsed the sustainable economic development of many post-colonial countries. Using the two main variables we can locate different countries in distinct categories (quadrants) across a two-dimensional Cartesianplane, with state involvement on the Y-axis and state and government accountability to citizens on the X-axis

TETRADENIA RIPARIA-MEDIATED SYNTHESIS OF NANO-GOLD PARTICLES

Plant-mediated synthesis of metallic nanoparticles is a growing area of interest in the fields of green synthesis and nanotechnology. The present work studied the synthesis of nano-gold particles using Tetradenia riparia flower, leaf and stem extracts derived using methanol and water. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) analysis and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. UV peaks for nano-gold synthesized from methanol and aqueous extracts were observed at 535 nm and 540 nm, respectively. SEM analysis revealed monodispersed spherical nano-gold particles in the diameter range of 10-35 nm. The presence of elemental gold in the nanoparticles was confirmed by EDX. FTIR analysis indicated the presence of terpenoids and pyrones which were responsible for reducing, capping and stabilizing of the nano-gold particles
