    Alternde Gesellschaften in Europa. Empirische Untersuchungen mit Daten des SHARE

    Dieser Band prĂ€sentiert drei ausgewĂ€hlte empirische Studien, die im Rahmen des Bevölkerungswissenschaftlichen Forschungspraktikums an der UniversitĂ€t Bamberg entstanden sind. Der erste Beitrag beschĂ€ftigt sich mit „familialen Transferregimes“ in Europa, dem privaten Äquivalent zu öffentlichen Wohlfahrtsstaatsregimes. Im Mittelpunkt der Analyse steht die Frage, ob und wie sich osteuropĂ€ische LĂ€nder von nord-, west- und sĂŒdeuropĂ€ischen Regimetypen unterscheiden. Der zweite Beitrag untersucht, ob sich Ă€ltere Menschen nach dem Renteneintritt gleichbleibend, vermehrt oder seltener ehrenamtlich engagieren. Der dritte Beitrag konzentriert sich ebenfalls auf die Effekte des Renteneintritts. Diese Arbeit geht der Frage nach, ob die Verrentung fĂŒr Ă€ltere Menschen ein stressauslösendes Ereignis ist, das den gesundheitlichen Abbau beschleunigt.     Identification of a Wide, Low-Mass Multiple System Containing the Brown Dwarf 2MASS J0850359+105716

    We report our discovery of NLTT 20346 as an M5+M6 companion system to the tight binary (or triple) L dwarf 2MASS J0850359+105716. This nearby (~31 pc), widely separated (~7700 AU) quadruple system was identified through a cross-match of proper motion catalogs. Follow-up imaging and spectroscopy of NLTT 20346 revealed it to be a magnetically active M5+M6 binary with components separated by ~2" (50-80 AU). Optical spectroscopy of the components show only moderate Halpha emission corresponding to a statistical age of ~5 - 7 Gyr for both M dwarfs. However NLTT 20346 is associated with the XMM-Newton source J085018.9+105644, and based on X-ray activity the age of NLTT 20346 is between 250-450 Myr. Strong Li absorption in the optical spectrum of 2MASS J0850+1057 indicates an upper age limit of 0.8 - 1.5 Gyr favoring the younger age for the primary. Using evolutionary models in combination with an adopted system age of 0.25-1.5 Gyr indicates a total mass for 2MASS J0850+1057 of 0.07+/-0.02 Msun if it is a binary. NLTT 20346/2MASS J0850+1057 joins a growing list of hierarchical systems containing brown dwarf binaries and is among the lowest binding energy associations found in the field. Formation simulations via gravitational fragmentation of massive extended disks have successfully produced a specific analog to this system.Comment: 13 pages, accepted for publication to A

    Task-Dependent Interaction between Parietal and Contralateral Primary Motor Cortex during Explicit versus Implicit Motor Imagery

    Both mental rotation (MR) and motor imagery (MI) involve an internalization of movement within motor and parietal cortex. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) techniques allow for a task-dependent investigation of the interhemispheric interaction between these areas. We used image-guided dual-coil TMS to investigate interactions between right inferior parietal lobe (rIPL) and left primary motor cortex (M1) in 11 healthy participants. They performed MI (right index-thumb pinching in time with a 1 Hz metronome) or hand MR tasks, while motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were recorded from right first dorsal interosseous. At rest, rIPL conditioning 6 ms prior to M1 stimulation facilitated MEPs in all participants, whereas this facilitation was abolished during MR. While rIPL conditioning 12 ms prior to M1 stimulation had no effect on MEPs at rest, it suppressed corticomotor excitability during MI. These results support the idea that rIPL forms part of a distinct inhibitory network that may prevent unwanted movement during imagery tasks

    Coregulator Control of Androgen Receptor Action by a Novel Nuclear Receptor-Binding Motif

    The androgen receptor (AR) is a ligand-activated transcription factor that is essential for prostate cancer development. It is activated by androgens through its ligand-binding domain (LBD), which consists predominantly of 11 α-helices. Upon ligand binding, the last helix is reorganized to an agonist conformation termed activator function-2 (AF-2) for coactivator binding. Several coactivators bind to the AF-2 pocket through conserved LXXLL or FXXLF sequences to enhance the activity of the receptor. Recently, a small compound-binding surface adjacent to AF-2 has been identified as an allosteric modulator of the AF-2 activity and is termed binding function-3 (BF-3). However, the role of BF-3 in vivo is currently unknown, and little is understood about what proteins can bind to it. Here we demonstrate that a duplicated GARRPR motif at the N terminus of the cochaperone Bag-1L functions through the BF-3 pocket. These findings are supported by the fact that a selective BF-3 inhibitor or mutations within the BF-3 pocket abolish the interaction between the GARRPR motif(s) and the BF-3. Conversely, amino acid exchanges in the two GARRPR motifs of Bag-1L can impair the interaction between Bag-1L and AR without altering the ability of Bag-1L to bind to chromatin. Furthermore, the mutant Bag-1L increases androgen-dependent activation of a subset of AR targets in a genome-wide transcriptome analysis, demonstrating a repressive function of the GARRPR/BF-3 interaction.     Histology of the Pharyngeal Constrictor Muscle in 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome and Non-Syndromic Children with Velopharyngeal Insufficiency

    Plastic surgeons aim to correct velopharyngeal insufficiency manifest by hypernasal speech with a velopharyngoplasty. The functional outcome has been reported to be worse in patients with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome than in patients without the syndrome. A possible explanation is the hypotonia that is often present as part of the syndrome. To confirm a myogenic component of the etiology of velopharyngeal insufficiency in children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, specimens of the pharyngeal constrictor muscle were taken from children with and without the syndrome. Histologic properties were compared between the groups. Specimens from the two groups did not differ regarding the presence of increased perimysial or endomysial space, fiber grouping by size or type, internalized nuclei, the percentage type I fibers, or the diameters of type I and type II fibers. In conclusion, a myogenic component of the etiology of velopharyngeal insufficiency in children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome could not be confirmed

    In Search of the Optimal Surgical Treatment for Velopharyngeal Dysfunction in 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome: A Systematic Review

    <div><h3>Background</h3><p>Patients with the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22qDS) and velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) tend to have residual VPD following surgery. This systematic review seeks to determine whether a particular surgical procedure results in superior speech outcome or less morbidity.</p> <h3>Methodology/ Principal Findings</h3><p>A combined computerized and hand-search yielded 70 studies, of which 27 were deemed relevant for this review, reporting on a total of 525 patients with 22qDS and VPD undergoing surgery for VPD. All studies were levels 2c or 4 evidence. The methodological quality of these studies was assessed using criteria based on the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias. Heterogeneous groups of patients were reported on in the studies. The surgical procedure was often tailored to findings on preoperative imaging. Overall, 50% of patients attained normal resonance, 48% attained normal nasal emissions scores, and 83% had understandable speech postoperatively. However, 5% became hyponasal, 1% had obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and 17% required further surgery. There were no significant differences in speech outcome between patients who underwent a fat injection, Furlow or intravelar veloplasty, pharyngeal flap pharyngoplasty, Honig pharyngoplasty, or sphincter pharyngoplasty or Hynes procedures. There was a trend that a lower percentage of patients attained normal resonance after a fat injection or palatoplasty than after the more obstructive pharyngoplasties (11–18% versus 44–62%, p = 0.08). Only patients who underwent pharyngeal flaps or sphincter pharyngoplasties incurred OSA, yet this was not statistically significantly more often than after other procedures (p = 0.25). More patients who underwent a palatoplasty needed further surgery than those who underwent a pharyngoplasty (50% versus 7–13%, p = 0.03).</p> <h3>Conclusions/ Significance</h3><p>In the heterogeneous group of patients with 22qDS and VPD, a grade C recommendation can be made to minimize the morbidity of further surgery by choosing to perform a pharyngoplasty directly instead of only a palatoplasty.</p> </div

    Astrophysics with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna

    Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be a transformative experiment for gravitational wave astronomy as it will offer unique opportunities to address many key astrophysical questions in a completely novel way. The synergy with ground-based and other space-based instruments in the electromagnetic domain, by enabling multi-messenger observations, will add further to the discovery potential of LISA. The next decade is crucial to prepare the astrophysical community for LISA's first observations. This review outlines the extensive landscape of astrophysical theory, numerical simulations, and astronomical observations that are instrumental for modeling and interpreting the upcoming LISA datastream. To this aim, the current knowledge in three main source classes for LISA is reviewed: ultra-compact stellar-mass binaries, massive black hole binaries, and extreme or intermediate mass ratio inspirals. The relevant astrophysical processes and the established modeling techniques are summarized. Likewise, open issues and gaps in our understanding of these sources are highlighted, along with an indication of how LISA could help make progress in the different areas. New research avenues that LISA itself, or its joint exploitation with studies in the electromagnetic domain, will enable, are also illustrated. Improvements in modeling and analysis approaches, such as the combination of numerical simulations and modern data science techniques, are discussed. This review is intended to be a starting point for using LISA as a new discovery tool for understanding our Universe

    Die VerÀnderung der Gesundheit nach dem Renteneintritt

    Mit dem Übergang in die Rente werden viele negative Schlagwörter, wie „Pensionsschock“, „Rollenverlust“ oder „kritisches Lebensereignis“, in Verbindung gebracht. Diese Annahmen beruhen zumeist auf den Annahmen der Disengagementtheorie oder der AktivitĂ€tstheorie. Sind diese Theorien heute noch angemessen? Wird der Ruhestand wirklich als Verlust wahrgenommen oder doch als Gewinn in Form einer „spĂ€ten Freiheit“? Anhand von Indikatoren der physischen, psychischen und subjektiven Gesundheit untersucht diese Arbeit, ob die Verrentung als Stressor wahrgenommen wird, der die Gesundheit verschlechtert. Die VerĂ€nderung der Gesundheit nach Renteneintritt wird mit zwei Wellen des europĂ€ischen Datensatzes Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) ĂŒberprĂŒft. Die analytische Stichprobe besteht aus 4536 Personen, von denen 581 zwischen der ersten und der zweiten Erhebungswelle in Rente gegangen sind. Mit „Fixed-Effekt“-Modellen wird der Einfluss des Verrentungsprozesses auf die VerĂ€nderung der Gesundheit ĂŒberprĂŒft. Die empirische Analyse zeigt keine VerĂ€nderung der Gesundheit nach Renteneintritt. Diese Ergebnisse sprechen gegen theoretische Annahmen negativer Effekte dieses Übergangs. Zudem verweisen sie auf die notwendige Aktualisierung bestehender gerontologischer Konzepte zum RentenĂŒbergang
