"Who was getting the highest share of the tiny pie? : Robust analysis of poverty dynamics and its decomposition by Ethiopian socioeconomic groups in the period of 1995 - 2000"

The general distribution of benefit was skewed to major urban centers, educated individuals, employee and individuals headed by formal employee and employers. But in terms of income the economic environment was very effective in avoiding the destitution among the most impoverished but not to rise the over all income among the poor. The economic environment in period 1995 to 2000 seems to discourage the risk takers and failed to improve the welfare of those better off poor. So if better distribution was strong side of this period; inability to raise incomes and discouraged risk taking behavior were the main short comings.poverty ethiopia dynamics change in poverty

“After all, most of the ‘Myth’ has some blurred empirical foundation: determinants of University level performance of students: case study of Rural Development Course covered in 2008 with in Mekelle University"

There is a widely accepted claim which insists that students’ performance at Ethiopian universities is constrained by poor educational input provided at high school level and especially by students’ limited capacity to communicate in English. For the specific course analyzed under this paper the impact of high school performance is found to be positive but very marginal. But based on Grade point average there is positive and significant association between high school performance and university performance, especially at freshman level. But this strong association is not specifically related to math or English performance per se but to over all performance.Education attendance university class-size student performance

Structure, conduct and performance of grain trading in Tigray and its impact on demand for commodity exchange: The case Maychew, Mokone, Alemata, Mekelle and Himora

    Get PDF
Grain markets of Alemata, Maychew, Mokone, Mekelle and Himora are observed to operate in highly inefficient market structure, with very low level of trust at meso and macro level. As result the marking system is less developed and less efficient in terms of creating space and time utility. In which lack of finance is the most critical problem. Under such reality warehouse receipt system with receipts that can be used as collateral for loan are critical first stage needed to get the market right. If ECX’s exchange service has to be introduced it has to be low cost and low value added service, if not it may not find significant demand among grain traders.commodity exchange; Ethiopian Commodity exchange; social capital; networks; grain trade; warehouse receipt

A multivariate approach for identification of optimal locations with in Ethiopia’s wheat market to tackle soaring inflation on food price (Extended version)

Using Johansen (1998 and 1991) vector error correction model and related extensions optimal locations where effective stabilization intervention can be done are identified. It is found that producer centers of Shashimiene and Bale Robe and Deficit market of Jimma are the locations where effective stabilization of wheat price can be done with least cost. However the national wheat market seems to have better capacity to process shocks coming from deficit markets and central markets than surplus markets. So targeting surplus markets, though effective in long run, can result on short run increase in volatility. Moreover, even though, distance could be one factor determining the inclusion of additional markets in to the rule of one price, it was not found to be the main factor in Ethiopian wheat markets. This implies that in highly imperfect market cointegration may not be solely related to distance only. Other factors like the level of market failures and the development of complementary institutions may influence the level of cointegration. Fortunately the search procedure for boundary of markets operating under rule of one price followed by earlier papers, though theoretically unsound is observed to work in Ethiopia wheat markets.cointegration food price inflation ethiopia

The nature of volatility in temporal profit with in Ethiopian commodity exchange: The case of washed export coffee modelled using ARFIMA-M-HYGARCH model

    Get PDF
Using AFIRMA-M-HYGARCH model it is found that the structure of temporal profit was observed to change in three periods. Since the second and third periods are associated with lagged effect of heavy handed state intervention, it was possible to get an idea to the effect of such state policy. It is concluded in this paper that the strategy was more destabilizing and it did harm wholesale traders by reducing their return from volatility, but it also improve their leverage to some extent. More over in what state intervention resulted is in changing the stable high volatility toward more structured and hard to control clustered volatility, than reducing it. For some time, however, the limit of the volatility was reduced while destabilizing the market from day to day. In general the grain market is observed to have high level of volatility in temporal profit

A multivariate approach for identification of optimal locations with in Ethiopia’s wheat market to tackle soaring inflation on food price

Based on vector error correction model, persistence profile and common trend estimation, optimal locations, that can be used to stabilize Ethiopian grain market, in general, and wheat market, in particular, are identified. Most of the Ethiopian wheat markets are observed to follow one common trend. This single common trend is mainly determined by producer centers and one deficit market of Jimma. Methodologically the grid search methodology proposed by early authors, in search of one price system, is given both theoretical and empirical justification, in this paper, from institutional economics point of view
