The Working Syllabus on the Gospel of St John
By careful analysis of certain terms used in the Gospel of John, one arrives at a deeper insight into the Gospel. I have made such an analysis but should like to have this analysis serve also a practical end. I have in mind the Bible class teacher who is charged with teaching the Gospel of John. For if the Bible class teacher has a grasp of the fundamental theological terms employed by John, it should not be too difficult for him to gather about these theological terms the materials of the Gospel as John presents them in his twenty-one chapters. The Bible class teacherâs approach, therefore, would not be the âchapter approach,â but an approach through units of thought discoverable in the entire Gospel
The World Council of Churches: A Theological Appraisal
Throughout the history of the divided Church there have been earnest efforts to reunite the separated communions. The impetus for such a reunion usually was strongest in a period either of prosperity or of opposition. At the beginning of the nineteenth century the Church experienced an era of revivalism and expansion, and shortly the former confessional boundaries were ignored, and in spite of divergent doctrinal views denominations united in organizing the several national Bible Societies and large Missionary Associations. When shortly afterwards a wave of secularism swept over the world, the various communions again set aside their confessional differences and organized the Evangelical Alliance ( 1846) to meet jointly the common foe
Unusual photoemission resonances of oxygen-dopant induced states in BiSrCaCuO
We have performed an angular-resolved photoemission study of underdoped,
optimally doped and overdoped BiSrCaCuO samples using a
wide photon energy range (15 - 100 eV). We report a small and broad
non-dispersive A peak in the energy distribution curves whose intensity
scales with doping. We attribute it to a local impurity state similar to the
one observed recently by scanning tunneling spectroscopy and identified as the
oxygen dopants. Detailed analysis of the resonance profile and comparison with
the single-layered BiSrCuO suggest a mixing of this local
state with Cu via the apical oxygens.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Randomized in situ evaluation of surface polishing protocols on the caries-protective effect of resin Infiltrant.
The aim of this placebo-controlled randomized in situ study was to evaluate the effect of different surface polishing protocols on enamel roughness, bacterial adhesion and caries-protective effect of a resin infiltrant. Seventy-five bovine enamel samples having artificial caries lesions were treated with a resinous infiltrant and afterwards randomly dividided into five polishing protocols: aluminum oxide flexible disks (Al2O3-Disks), silicon carbide tips (SIC-Tips), silicon carbide brush (SIC-Brush), silicon carbide polyester strips (SIC-Strips) or no polishing [negative control (NC)]. Average surface roughness (Ra) was assessed by profilometry. Samples were mounted in palatal appliances under a mesh for biofilm accumulation. Fifteen volunteers wore the intraoral appliances (14-days) and cariogenic challenge was triggered by sucrose solutions. Biofilm formed was collected for microbiological analysis of caries-related bacteria (Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus acidophilus) and demineralization was assessed by cross-sectional microhardness. Mean Knoop hardness numbers (Kg/mm2) were plotted over lesion depth (”m) and area under the lesion curve was subtracted from sound enamel to determine demineralization (ÎS, Kg/mm2x”m). Data were analyzed by ANOVA and post-hoc comparisons (αâ=â0.05). NC resulted in significantly higher Ra means than Al2O3-Disks and SIC-Strips. Bacterial counts were not significantly different between the groups (pâ>â0.05). Regards ÎS means, however none of the groups were significantly different to NC (6983.3 kg/mm2x”m /CI 4246.1-9720.5, pâ>â0.05). Conclusions: Polishing protocols (Al2O3-Disks, SIC-Strips) significantly decreseased roughness of infiltrated-enamel, however none of the polishing protocols could signicantly decrease bacterial counts nor resulted in significant less demineralization
Heavy Quarkonium Physics
This report is the result of the collaboration and research effort of the
Quarkonium Working Group over the last three years. It provides a comprehensive
overview of the state of the art in heavy-quarkonium theory and experiment,
covering quarkonium spectroscopy, decay, and production, the determination of
QCD parameters from quarkonium observables, quarkonia in media, and the effects
on quarkonia of physics beyond the Standard Model. An introduction to common
theoretical and experimental tools is included. Future opportunities for
research in quarkonium physics are also discussed.Comment: xviii + 487 pages, 260 figures. The full text is also available at

Anomalous Pseudoscalar-Photon Vertex In and Out of Equilibrium
The anomalous pseudoscalar-photon vertex is studied in real time in and out
of equilibrium in a constituent quark model. The goal is to understand the
in-medium modifications of this vertex, exploring the possibility of enhanced
isospin breaking by electromagnetic effects as well as the formation of neutral
pion condensates in a rapid chiral phase transition in peripheral,
ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. In equilibrium the effective vertex is
afflicted by infrared and collinear singularities that require hard thermal
loop (HTL) and width corrections of the quark propagator. The resummed
effective equilibrium vertex vanishes near the chiral transition in the chiral
limit. In a strongly out of equilibrium chiral phase transition we find that
the chiral condensate drastically modifies the quark propagators and the
effective vertex. The ensuing dynamics for the neutral pion results in a
potential enhancement of isospin breaking and the formation of
condensates. While the anomaly equation and the axial Ward identity are not
modified by the medium in or out of equilibrium, the effective real-time
pseudoscalar-photon vertex is sensitive to low energy physics.Comment: Revised version to appear in Phys. Rev. D. 42 pages, 4 figures, uses

Taxonomy and pathology of Togninia (Diaporthales) and its Phaeoacremonium anamorphs.
The genus Togninia (Diaporthales, Togniniaceae) is here monographed along with its Phaeoacremonium (Pm.) anamorphs. Ten species of Togninia and 22 species of Phaeoacremonium are treated. Several new species of Togninia (T.) are described, namely T. argentinensis (anamorph Pm. argentinense), T. austroafricana (anamorph Pm. austroafricanum), T. krajdenii, T. parasitica, T. rubrigena and T. viticola. New species of Phaeoacremonium include Pm. novae-zealandiae (teleomorph T. novae-zealandiae), Pm. iranianum, Pm. sphinctrophorum and Pm. theobromatis. Species can be identified based on their cultural and morphological characters, supported by DNA data derived from partial sequences of the actin and Ă-tubulin genes. Phylogenies of the SSU and LSU rRNA genes were used to determine whether Togninia has more affinity with the Calosphaeriales or the Diaporthales. The results confirmed that Togninia had a higher affinity to the Diaporthales than the Calosphaeriales. Examination of type specimens revealed that T. cornicola, T. vasculosa, T. rhododendri, T. minima var. timidula and T. villosa, were not members of Togninia. The new combinations Calosphaeria cornicola, Calosphaeria rhododendri, Calosphaeria transversa, Calosphaeria tumidula, Calosphaeria vasculosa and Jattaea villosa are proposed. Species of Phaeoacremonium are known vascular plant pathogens causing wilting and dieback of woody plants. The most prominent diseases in which they are involved are Petri disease and esca, which occur on grapevines and are caused by a complex of fungi, often including multiple species of Phaeoacremonium. Various Phaeoacremonium species are opportunistic fungi on humans and cause phaeohyphomycosis. The correct and rapid identification of Phaeoacremonium species is important to facilitate the understanding of their involvement in plant as well as human disease. A rapid identification method was developed for the 22 species of Phaeacremonium. It involved the use of 23 species-specific primers, including 20 primers targeting the Ă-tubulin gene and three targeting the actin gene. These primers can be used in 14 multiplex reactions. Additionally, a multiple-entry electronic key based on morphological, cultural and Ă-tubulin sequence data was developed to facilitate phenotypic and sequence-based species identification of the different Phaeoacremonium species. Separate dichotomous keys are provided for the identification of the Togninia and Phaeoacremonium species. Keys for the identification of Phaeoacremonium-like fungi and the genera related to Togninia are also provided. The mating strategy of several Togninia species was investigated with ascospores obtained from fertile perithecia produced in vitro. Togninia argentinensis and T. novae-zealandiae have homothallic mating systems, whereas T. austroafricana, T. krajdenii, T. minima, T. parasitica, T. rubrigena and T. viticola were heterothallic.
Functional Polymorphisms in PRODH Are Associated with Risk and Protection for Schizophrenia and Fronto-Striatal Structure and Function
PRODH, encoding proline oxidase (POX), has been associated with schizophrenia through linkage, association, and the 22q11 deletion syndrome (Velo-Cardio-Facial syndrome). Here, we show in a family-based sample that functional polymorphisms in PRODH are associated with schizophrenia, with protective and risk alleles having opposite effects on POX activity. Using a multimodal imaging genetics approach, we demonstrate that haplotypes constructed from these risk and protective functional polymorphisms have dissociable correlations with structure, function, and connectivity of striatum and prefrontal cortex, impacting critical circuitry implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Specifically, the schizophrenia risk haplotype was associated with decreased striatal volume and increased striatal-frontal functional connectivity, while the protective haplotype was associated with decreased striatal-frontal functional connectivity. Our findings suggest a role for functional genetic variation in POX on neostriatal-frontal circuits mediating risk and protection for schizophrenia
Bose-Einstein Correlations of Three Charged Pions in Hadronic Z^0 Decays
Bose-Einstein Correlations (BEC) of three identical charged pions were
studied in 4 x 10^6 hadronic Z^0 decays recorded with the OPAL detector at LEP.
The genuine three-pion correlations, corrected for the Coulomb effect, were
separated from the known two-pion correlations by a new subtraction procedure.
A significant genuine three-pion BEC enhancement near threshold was observed
having an emitter source radius of r_3 = 0.580 +/- 0.004 (stat.) +/- 0.029
(syst.) fm and a strength of \lambda_3 = 0.504 +/- 0.010 (stat.) +/- 0.041
(syst.). The Coulomb correction was found to increase the \lambda_3 value by
\~9% and to reduce r_3 by ~6%. The measured \lambda_3 corresponds to a value of
0.707 +/- 0.014 (stat.) +/- 0.078 (syst.) when one takes into account the
three-pion sample purity. A relation between the two-pion and the three-pion
source parameters is discussed.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX, 5 eps figures included, accepted by Eur. Phys. J.
