<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The objective of this study was to investigate the indigenous utilization of termite mounds and termites in a rain-fed rice growing village in the central plain of Laos, where rice production is low and varies year-to-year, and to assess the possibility of sustainable termite mound utilization in the future. This research was carried out from 2007 to 2009.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The termites were collected from their mounds and surrounding areas and identified. Twenty villagers were interviewed on their use of termites and their mounds in the village. Sixty-three mounds were measured to determine their dimensions in early March, early July and middle to late November, 2009.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Eleven species of Termitidae were recorded during the survey period. It was found that the villagers use termite mounds as fertilizer for growing rice, vegetable beds and charcoal kilns. The villagers collected termites for food and as feed for breeding fish. Over the survey period, 81% of the mounds surveyed increased in volume; however, the volume was estimated to decrease by 0.114 m3 mound-1 year-1 on average due to several mounds being completely cut out.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>It was concluded that current mound utilization by villagers is not sustainable. To ensure sustainable termite utilization in the future, studies should be conducted to enhance factors that promote mound restoration by termites. Furthermore, it will be necessary to improve mound conservation methods used by the villagers after changes in the soil mass of mounds in paddy fields and forests has been measured accurately. The socio-economic factors that affect mound utilization should also be studied.</p

In-plane electronic anisotropy revealed by interlayer resistivity measurements on the iron-based superconductor parent compound CaFeAsF

Both cuprates and iron-based superconductors demonstrate nematicity, defined as the spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetry in electron systems. The nematic state can play a role in the high-transition-temperature superconductivity of these compounds. However, the microscopic mechanism responsible for the transport anisotropy in iron-based compounds remains debatable. Here, we investigate the electronic anisotropy of CaFeAsF by measuring its interlayer resistivity under magnetic fields with varying field directions. Counterintuitively, the interlayer resistivity was larger in the longitudinal configuration (BIcB \parallel I \parallel c) than in the transverse one (BIcB \perp I \parallel c). The interlayer resistivity exhibited a so-called coherence peak under in-plane fields and was highly anisotropic with respect to the in-plane field direction. At TT = 4 K and BB = 14 T, the magnetoresistance Δρ/ρ0\Delta\rho/\rho_0 was seven times larger in the BboB \parallel b_o than in the BaoB \parallel a_o configuration. Our theoretical calculations of the conductivity based on the first-principles electronic band structure qualitatively reproduced the above observations but underestimated the magnitudes of the observed features. The proposed methodology can be a powerful tool for probing the nematic electronic state in various materials.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figure

Recently, research and development of integrated low-voltage dc-dc converter to LSIs has been active. In order to realize such integrated dc power supply, power magnetic devices must be integrated in it. The authors have fabricated planar power inductor embedded in LSI package for hundreds megahertz switching dc-dc buck converter. In this study, two types of planar power inductors have been fabricated: one was spin-sprayed Zn-ferrite thick film magnetic core inductor, and the other was composite magnetic core (Fe-based amorphous/polyimide) inductor. Footprint of the fabricated inductors was 850 x 850 mu m(2), their inductance was about 10 nH, and the quality factor Q was about 20 at 100 MHz. The rating current which depends on the superimposed dc characteristic was at least up to 2 A.ArticleIEEE TRANSACTIONS ON MAGNETICS. 47(10):3204-3207 (2011)journal articl

Imaging features of a myoepithelial carcinoma of the nasal cavity : A case report and literature review

Myoepithelial carcinoma of the nasal cavity is extremely rare. We report the case of a 66-year-old man with myoepithelial carcinoma of the nasal cavity. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a lobulated soft tissue mass with central necrosis and hemorrhage, as well as an invasion of the skull base and left orbit. The patient presented with continuous nasal congestion and heavy head and had no elevated level of squamous cell carcinoma-related antigen. CT, magnetic resonance imaging, or 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/CT revealed no evidence of a metastatic lesion. 18F-FDG accumulation in the tumor was inhomogeneous and moderate. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen confirmed a well-circumscribed solid tumor with septa, a small area of hemorrhage, and necrosis. The subsequent diagnosis was a myoepithelial carcinoma of the left nasal cavity. This case shows that nasal myoepithelial carcinoma might appear as a well-defined lobulated mass with hemorrhagic necrosis and intense contrast enhancement in the solid component. We conjecture that hemorrhagic necrosis and intense enhancement values may be potential markers of nasal myoepithelial carcinoma
