    A generic unital positive operator-valued measure (POVM), which transforms a given stationary pure state to an arbitrary statistical state with perfect decoherence, is presented. This allows one to operationally realize thermalization as a special case. The loss of information due to randomness generated by the operation is discussed by evaluating the entropy.     Astrophysical Condition on the attolensing as a possible probe for a modified gravity theory

    We investigate the wave effect in the gravitational lensing by a black hole with very tiny mass less than 10^-19 solar mass, which is called attolensing, motivated by a recent report that the lensing signature might be a possible probe of a modified gravity theory in the braneworld scenario. We focus on the finite source size effect and the effect of the relative motion of the source to the lens, which are influential to the wave effect in the attolensing. Astrophysical condition that the lensed interference signature can be a probe of the modified gravity theory is demonstrated.     Variable stars in Terzan 5: additional evidence of multi-age and multi-iron stellar populations

    Terzan 5 is a complex stellar system in the Galactic bulge, harboring stellar populations with very different iron content ({\Delta}[Fe/H] ~1 dex) and with ages differing by several Gyrs. Here we present an investigation of its variable stars. We report on the discovery and characterization of three RR Lyrae stars. For these newly discovered RR Lyrae and for six Miras of known periods we provide radial velocity and chemical abundances from spectra acquired with X-SHOOTER at the VLT. We find that the three RR Lyrae and the three short period Miras (P<300 d) have radial velocity consistent with being Terzan 5 members. They have sub-solar iron abundances and enhanced [{\alpha}/Fe], well matching the age and abundance patterns of the 12 Gyr metal-poor stellar populations of Terzan 5. Only one, out of the three long period (P>300 d) Miras analyzed in this study, has a radial velocity consistent with being Terzan 5 member. Its super-solar iron abundance and solar-scaled [{\alpha}/Fe] nicely match the chemical properties of the metal rich stellar population of Terzan 5 and its derived mass nicely agrees with being several Gyrs younger than the short period Miras.     Lossy data compression with random gates

    We introduce a new protocol for a lossy data compression algorithm which is based on constraint satisfaction gates. We show that the theoretical capacity of algorithms built from standard parity-check gates converges exponentially fast to the Shannon's bound when the number of variables seen by each gate increases. We then generalize this approach by introducing random gates. They have theoretical performances nearly as good as parity checks, but they offer the great advantage that the encoding can be done in linear time using the Survey Inspired Decimation algorithm, a powerful algorithm for constraint satisfaction problems derived from statistical physics

    Magnetic irreversibility and Verwey transition in nano-crystalline bacterial magnetite

    The magnetic properties of biologically-produced magnetite nanocrystals biomineralized by four different magnetotactic bacteria were compared to those of synthetic magnetite nanocrystals and large, high quality single crystals. The magnetic feature at the Verwey temperature, TVT_{V}, was clearly seen in all nanocrystals, although its sharpness depended on the shape of individual nanoparticles and whether or not the particles were arranged in magnetosome chains. The transition was broader in the individual superparamagnetic nanoparticles for which TB<TVT_{B}<T_{V}, where TBT_{B} is the superparamagnetic blocking temperature. For the nanocrystals organized in chains, the effective blocking temperature TB>TVT_{B}>T_{V} and the Verwey transition is sharply defined. No correlation between the particle size and TVT_{V} was found. Furthermore, measurements of M(H,T,time)M(H,T,time) suggest that magnetosome chains behave as long magnetic dipoles where the local magnetic field is directed along the chain and this result confirms that time-logarithmic magnetic relaxation is due to the collective (dipolar) nature of the barrier for magnetic moment reorientation

    Dynamic Expression of Cadherins Regulates Vocal Development in a Songbird

    BACKGROUND: Since, similarly to humans, songbirds learn their vocalization through imitation during their juvenile stage, they have often been used as model animals to study the mechanisms of human verbal learning. Numerous anatomical and physiological studies have suggested that songbirds have a neural network called 'song system' specialized for vocal learning and production in their brain. However, it still remains unknown what molecular mechanisms regulate their vocal development. It has been suggested that type-II cadherins are involved in synapse formation and function. Previously, we found that type-II cadherin expressions are switched in the robust nucleus of arcopallium from cadherin-7-positive to cadherin-6B-positive during the phase from sensory to sensorimotor learning stage in a songbird, the Bengalese finch. Furthermore, in vitro analysis using cultured rat hippocampal neurons revealed that cadherin-6B enhanced and cadherin-7 suppressed the frequency of miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents via regulating dendritic spine morphology. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: To explore the role of cadherins in vocal development, we performed an in vivo behavioral analysis of cadherin function with lentiviral vectors. Overexpression of cadherin-7 in the juvenile and the adult stages resulted in severe defects in vocal production. In both cases, harmonic sounds typically seen in the adult Bengalese finch songs were particularly affected. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our results suggest that cadherins control vocal production, particularly harmonic sounds, probably by modulating neuronal morphology of the RA nucleus. It appears that the switching of cadherin expressions from sensory to sensorimotor learning stage enhances vocal production ability to make various types of vocalization that is essential for sensorimotor learning in a trial and error manner

    Práticas de educação ambiental em aulas de química em uma visão socioambiental: perspectivas e desafios

    Neste artigo, são apresentados resultados obtidos em quatro estudos de casos sobre a introdução de educação ambiental em uma visão socioambiental em aulas de Química. A discussão dos resultados levanta reflexões sobre perspectivas e desafios para a educação ambiental no ensino de Química. São demonstradas sugestões de atividades possíveis de serem desenvolvidas em aulas de Químicas. Várias fontes de dados foram usadas, como entrevistas, questionários, produção de textos pelos estudantes, pré e pós-testes e observações registradas em diário de campo. Os estudos de caso foram conduzidos por mestrandos que deveriam propor ações práticas para professores em sua dissertação de mestrado. Os dados demonstram que a educação ambiental é um desafio que requer diferentes estratégias de ensino e ações coordenadas com a escola para que possa ser trabalhada em uma visão socioambiental; o que depende de condições na escola para engajar os professores em seus projetos
