Perspectives on Knowledge Mobilization: An Introduction to the Special Issue
In this introduction to the Technology Innovation Management Review's special issue on Knowledge Mobilization, Guest Editors Kimberly Matheson and Cathy Malcolm Edwards share their different perspectives as an academic and a knowledge broker on the process of knowledge mobilization. Despite their distinctive points of entry into the knowledge mobilization field, they share a common perspective on the value of researchers and knowledge users learning from each other, working together to co-create solutions, and the importance of contributing back into the basic research and training of the next generation. They also provide the context of the authors' contributions to this special issue, noting that the articles are rooted in the authors’ experiences in the health domain, but that they help to understand some of the challenges and rewards of integrating knowledge mobilization into research approaches more generally
What brings people to an unconventional festival on a cold night?: An understanding of audience involvement at the Beltane Fire Festival
The key aim of this project is to evaluate the 2011 audience consumption of the Beltane Fire Festival (BFF) in order to inform the future development of the festival. The objectives are to: first, investigate the demographics, attitudes and profile of the 2011 audience; second, investigate customer needs which they may be seeking to satisfy at the 2011 festival; and, finally, to develop a typology of audience groupings. Such work has precedents in various studies (Chang, 2006; Lee, Lee & Wicks, 2004). Investigation of the typology will be based on demographics; attendees’ motives and needs; their perceptions of BFF as a ritual and/or performance; and attitudes to change and spirituality. A substantially quantitative research methodology will be adopted, comprising two distinct phases. First, prior to the audience survey, a pilot study will be undertaken involving the current performers/volunteers. Second, informed by this pilot, a survey of the 2011 audience will be conducted on a face-to-face basis. Data analysis will be facilitated by SPSS. Analysis will be undertaken with the application of quantitative methods often used in marketing and higher education and triangulated with findings of a qualitative study pertaining to the BFF development. This study has been informed by an earlier qualitative study by the authors. Indicative findings will centre upon the following key areas: a typology of audience groupings based on demographics, profile, motives and spiritual attitudes. In conclusion, this paper will contribute to existing work on festival audiences and will provide an insight into the contribution of relevance of spiritual beliefs to audience groupings
The Role of Expectation and Memory-retrieval Techniques in the Construction of Beliefs about Past Events
This study assessed social factors affecting the elicitation of false reports for events occurring the day after birth. High, medium and low hypnotizable participants (N = 170) were randomly assigned to hypnotic, guided imagery (non-hypnotic), expectancy or control conditions. Participants were led to believe that they had experienced a specific event on the day after birth. Hypnotic and guided imagery participants were age regressed, while participants in the expectancy condition were provided with cues suggesting access to this memory was feasible. Relative to controls, these participants recalled higher levels of day-after-birth reports, although age-regressed participants reported significantly more event specific details than expectancy participants. Furthermore, high and medium hypnotizables were more likely than low hypnotizables to recall events occurring the day after birth. Alternative approaches for identifying acute systemic toxicity: Moving from research to regulatory testing
Acute systemic toxicity testing provides the basis for hazard labeling and risk management of chemicals. A number of international efforts have been directed at identifying non-animal alternatives for in vivo acute systemic toxicity tests. A September 2015 workshop, Alternative Approaches for Identifying Acute Systemic Toxicity: Moving from Research to Regulatory Testing, reviewed the state-of-the-science of non-animal alternatives for this testing and explored ways to facilitate implementation of alternatives. Workshop attendees included representatives from international regulatory agencies, academia, nongovernmental organizations, and industry. Resources identified as necessary for meaningful progress in implementing alternatives included compiling and making available high-quality reference data, training on use and interpretation of in vitro and in silico approaches, and global harmonization of testing requirements. Attendees particularly noted the need to characterize variability in reference data to evaluate new approaches. They also noted the importance of understanding the mechanisms of acute toxicity, which could be facilitated by the development of adverse outcome pathways. Workshop breakout groups explored different approaches to reducing or replacing animal use for acute toxicity testing, with each group crafting a roadmap and strategy to accomplish near-term progress. Clinical Trial Endpoints in Metastatic Cancer: Using Individual Participant Data to Inform Future Trials Methodology
Meta-Analysis based on individual participant data (IPD) is a powerful methodology for synthesizing evidence by combining information drawn from multiple trials. Hitherto, its principal application has been in questions of clinical management, but an increasingly important use is in clarifying trials methodology, for instance in the selection of endpoints, as discussed in this review. In oncology, the Aide et Recherche en Cancerologie Digestive (ARCAD) Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Database is a leader in the use of IPD-based meta-Analysis in methodological research. The ARCAD database contains IPD from more than 38 000 patients enrolled in 46 studies and continues to collect phase III trial data. Here, we review the principal findings of the ARCAD project in respect of endpoint selection and examine their implications for cancer trials. Analysis of the database has confirmed that progression-free survival (PFS) is no longer a valid surrogate endpoint predictive of overall survival in the first-line treatment of colorectal cancer. Nonetheless, PFS remains an endpoint of choice for most first-line trials in metastatic colorectal cancer and other solid tumors. Only substantial PFS effects are likely to translate into clinically meaningful benefits, and accordingly, we advocate an oncology research model designed to identify highly effective treatments in carefully defined patient groups. We also review the use of the ARCAD database in assessing clinical response including novel response metrics and prognostic markers. These studies demonstrate the value of IPD as a tool for methodological studies and provide a reference point for the expansion of this approach within clinical cancer research
