The Ising-Kondo lattice with transverse field: an f-moment Hamiltonian for URu2Si2?
We study the phase diagram of the Ising-Kondo lattice with transverse
magnetic field as a possible model for the weak-moment heavy-fermion compound
URu2Si2, in terms of two low-lying f singlets in which the uranium moment is
coupled by on-site exchange to the conduction electron spins. In the mean-field
approximation for an extended range of parameters, we show that the conduction
electron magnetization responds logarithmically to f-moment formation, that the
ordered moment in the antiferromagnetic state is anomalously small, and that
the Neel temperature is of the order observed. The model gives a qualitatively
correct temperature-dependence, but not magnitude, of the specific heat. The
majority of the specific heat jump at the Neel temperature arises from the
formation of a spin gap in the conduction electron spectrum. We also discuss
the single-impurity version of the model and speculate on ways to increase the
specific heat coefficient. In the limits of small bandwidth and of small
Ising-Kondo coupling, we find that the model corresponds to anisotropic

Isolation and transmission of an unidentified Babesia sp. infective for cattle
Engorged adult female ticks submitted from farms in South Africa were routinely screened for protozoan parasites by examination of haemolymph smears. An unidentified Babesia sp. was found in Hyalomma marginatum rufipes and its transmission to susceptible cattle was achieved both biologically (tick feeding) and mechanically (injection of infected blood). Attempts to transmit this species to susceptible rabbits and a horse using similar methods did not produce evidence of infection. This Babesia sp. was of low pathogenicity, even in splenectomized cattle. Morphologically, intra-erythrocytic piroplasms and merozoites in tick haemolymph resembled other bovine Babesia spp. in many respects. Although it could be classified as a large Babesia, it was intermediate in size between the other species.The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi.

Low-frequency incommensurate magnetic response in strongly correlated systems
It is shown that in the t-J model of Cu-O planes at low frequencies the
dynamic spin structure factor is peaked at incommensurate wave vectors
(1/2+-delta,1/2)$, (1/2,1/2+-delta). The incommensurability is connected with
the momentum dependencies of the magnon frequency and damping near the
antiferromagnetic wave vector. The behavior of the incommensurate peaks is
similar to that observed in La_{2-x}(Ba,Sr)_xCuO_{4+y} and YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-y}:
for hole concentrations 0.02<x<=0.12 we find that delta is nearly proportional
to x, while for x>0.12 it tends to saturation. The incommensurability
disappears with increasing temperature. Generally the incommensurate magnetic
response is not accompanied by an inhomogeneity of the carrier density.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Enhancement of Anisotropy due to Fluctuations in Quasi-One-Dimensional Antiferromagnets
It is shown that the observed anisotropy of magnetization at high magnetic
fields in RbMnBr3 , a quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet on a distorted
stacked triangular lattice, is due to quantum and thermal fluctuations. These
fluctuations are taken into account in the framework of linear spin-wave theory
in the region of strong magnetic fields. In this region the divergent
one-dimensional integrals are cut off by magnetic field and the bare easy-plane
anisotropy. Logarithmical dependence on the cutoff leads to the "enhancement"
of the anisotropy in magnetization. Comparison between magnetization data and
our theory with parameters obtained from neutron scattering experiments has

Babesia, Theileria and Anaplasma spp. infecting sable antelope, Hippotragus niger (Harris, 1838), in southern Africa
Some observations are recorded on blood parasites of sable antelopes. Blood smears of 124 of these antelopes from South Africa and Zimbabwe were examined and 7 were found to be positive for a Babesia sp., identified as Babesia irvinesmithi Martinaglia 1936. A total of 70 of the smears were positive for Theilerial piroplasms, while 1 smear had macroschizonts (with cytomeres) and microschizonts of a Theileria (=Cytauxzoon)
sp. One blood smear was positive for an Anaplasma sp. Attempts to isolate the Babesia sp. by subinoculating blood from sable to splenectomized and intact sable and splenectomized cattle were unsuccessful. Attempts to infect sable with Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina were likewise unsuccessful. Theilerial piroplasms reached high levels in a splenectomized sable but could not be transmitted with blood to cattle. The Anaplasma sp. was found to be infective for sheep but not for cattle.The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi.

The inability of a South African Babesia bovis vaccine strain to infect Boophilus microplus
A strain of Babesia bovis that had been attenuated by rapid syringe passage through a series of 23 splenectomized calves was unable to infect its vector Boophilus microplus. An attempt to transmit the attenuated Australian Babesia bigemina G strain with a South African strain of B. microplus was likewise unsuccessful. The isolation and transmission of an unidentified Babesia sp. to cattle by Hyalomma truncatum Koch 1844
An unidentified Babesia sp. which causes a mild disease in cattle was isolated in a splenectomized ox that received pooled blood from field cattle.
That this organism is pleomorphic and resembles Babesia occultans makes it difficult to differentiate between these organisms microscopically. Initially, it was suspected that this Babesia could be B. occultans. Several attempts to transmit this parasite transovarially with Hyalomma marginatum rufipes, the vector of B. occultans, failed. Continued efforts to identify possible vectors, using Boophilus microplus, Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi and Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, all failed. The only tick thus far identified that could have transmitted the infection transovarially in the adult stage was the two-host tick Hyalomma truncatum.The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi.

Sound Propagation in Nematic Fermi Liquid
We study the longitudinal sound propagation in the electronic nematic Fermi
liquid where the Fermi surface is distorted due to the spontaneously broken
rotational symmetry. The behavior of the sound wave in the nematic ordered
state is dramatically different from that in the isotropic Fermi liquid. The
collective modes associated with the fluctuations of the Fermi surface
distortion in the nematic Fermi liquid leads to the strong and anisotropic
damping of the sound wave. The relevance of the nematic Fermi liquid in doped
Mott insulator is discussed.Comment: 4 pages, no figur
Latest results on Jovian disk X-rays from XMM-Newton
We present the results of a spectral study of the soft X-ray emission
(0.2-2.5 keV) from low-latitude (`disk') regions of Jupiter. The data were
obtained during two observing campaigns with XMM-Newton in April and November
2003. While the level of the emission remained approximately the same between
April and the first half of the November observation, the second part of the
latter shows an enhancement by about 40% in the 0.2-2.5 keV flux. A very
similar, and apparently correlated increase, in time and scale, was observed in
the solar X-ray and EUV flux.
The months of October and November 2003 saw a period of particularly intense
solar activity, which appears reflected in the behaviour of the soft X-rays
from Jupiter's disk. The X-ray spectra, from the XMM-Newton EPIC CCD cameras,
are all well fitted by a coronal model with temperatures in the range 0.4-0.5
keV, with additional line emission from Mg XI (1.35 keV) and Si XIII (1.86
keV): these are characteristic lines of solar X-ray spectra at maximum activity
and during flares.
The XMM-Newton observations lend further support to the theory that Jupiter's
disk X-ray emission is controlled by the Sun, and may be produced in large part
by scattering, elastic and fluorescent, of solar X-rays in the upper atmosphere
