    Structural mapping from MSS-LANDSAT imagery: A proposed methodology for international geological correlation studies

    A methodology is proposed for international geological correlation studies based on LANDSAT-MSS imagery, Bullard's model of continental fit and compatible structural trends between Northeast Brazil and the West African counterpart. Six extensive lineaments in the Brazilian study area are mapped and discussed according to their regional behavior and in relation to the adjacent continental margin. Among the first conclusions, correlations were found between the Sobral Pedro II Lineament and the megafaults that surround the West African craton; and the Pernambuco Lineament with the Ngaurandere Linemanet in Cameroon. Ongoing research to complete the methodological stages includes the mapping of the West African structural framework, reconstruction of the pre-drift puzzle, and an analysis of the counterpart correlations

    Dengue Fever in Wonosobo district had been increasing rapidly during 2009. Sub-district Wonosobo andGarung have different altitude characteristic and geographic. Potential transmissions based on altitude haveto be learned, especially in association with mosquitoes as dengue fever\u27s vector. The objectives of thisstudy is to count gonotropic cycle and chance of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus\u27 survival. Spot surveymethod and cross sectional design were used for this study. This study was being held in Pagerkukuhvillage (752-842 m) and Jaraksari village (765-781 m) at Wonosobo sub-district and Gemblengan village(1.166 m) at Garung sub-district. Mosquitoes were trapped in 100 m radius from dengue fever\u27s casereport. Gonotropic cycle of Ae. albopictus in Gemblengan village is longer (3 - 7 days) than Pagerkukuh\u27s(3 - 5 days). Gonotopic cycle\u27s of Ae. aegypti in Jaraksari village lasts for 3 - 5 days. Survival chance ofAe. albopictus in Gemblengan village is higher (0,61-0,81) than Pagerkukuh village (0,54-0,69).Meanwhile, survival chance of Ae. aegypti in Jaraksari village was high (0,86-0,91). It\u27s suggested to prioroutside house PSN (mosquito\u27s nest eradication). Therefore, training for thermal fogging officer outsidehouse PSN is important. It also needs dengue virus\u27 detection to verificate Ae. albopictus as dengue fever\u27svector

    The spanish influenza pandemic: a lesson from history 100 years after 1918

    In Europe in 1918, influenza spread through Spain, France, Great Britain and Italy, causing havoc with military operations during the First World War. The influenza pandemic of 1918 killed more than 50 million people worldwide. In addition, its socioeconomic consequences were huge. "Spanish flu", as the infection was dubbed, hit different agegroups, displaying a so-called "W-trend", typically with two spikes in children and the elderly. However, healthy young adults were also affected. In order to avoid alarming the public, several local health authorities refused to reveal the numbers of people affected and deaths. Consequently, it was very difficult to assess the impact of the disease at the time. Although official communications issued by health authorities worldwide expressed certainty about the etiology of the infection, in laboratories it was not always possible to isolate the famous Pfeiffer's bacillus, which was, at that time, deemed to be the cause of influenza. The first official preventive actions were implemented in August 1918; these included the obligatory notification of suspected cases and the surveillance of communities such as day-schools, boarding schools and barracks. Identifying suspected cases through surveillance, and voluntary and/or mandatory quarantine or isolation, enabled the spread of Spanish flu to be curbed. At that time, these public health measures were the only effective weapons against the disease, as no vaccines or antivirals were available. Virological and bacteriological analysis of preserved samples from infected soldiers and other young people who died during the pandemic period is a major step toward a better understanding of this pandemic and of how to prepare for future pandemics

    Electron-neutrino scattering off nuclei from two different theoretical perspectives

    We analyze charged-current electron-neutrino cross sections on Carbon. We consider two different theoretical approaches, on one hand the Continuum Random Phase Approximation (CRPA) which allows a description of giant resonances and quasielastic excitations, on the other hand the RPA-based calculations which are able to describe multinucleon emission and coherent and incoherent pion production as well as quasielastic excitations. We compare the two approaches in the genuine quasielastic channel, and find a satisfactory agreement between them at large energies while at low energies the collective giant resonances show up only in the CRPA approach. We also compare electron-neutrino cross sections with the corresponding muon-neutrino ones in order to investigate the impact of the different charged-lepton masses. Finally, restricting to the RPA-based approach we compare the sum of quasielastic, multinucleon emission, coherent and incoherent one-pion production cross sections (folded with the electron-neutrino T2K flux) with the charged-current inclusive electron-neutrino differential cross sections on Carbon measured by T2K. We find a good agreement with the data. The multinucleon component is needed in order to reproduce the T2K electron-neutrino inclusive cross sections

    Enhanced Resolution of Lossy Interferometry by Coherent Amplification of Single Photons

    In the quantum sensing context most of the efforts to design novel quantum techniques of sensing have been constrained to idealized, noise-free scenarios, in which effects of environmental disturbances could be neglected. In this work, we propose to exploit optical parametric amplification to boost interferometry sensitivity in the presence of losses in a minimally invasive scenario. By performing the amplification process on the microscopic probe after the interaction with the sample, we can beat the losses detrimental effect on the phase measurement which affects the single-photon state after its interaction with the sample, and thus improve the achievable sensitivity.Comment: 4 + 3 pages, 3 + 5 figure

    Long-Term Effects of Concussion on Motor Performance Across the Lifespan.

    This dissertation aims to provide critical insight into the possible long-term effects of concussion on motor and cognitive performance, through a set of cross-sectional investigations. To date, the elite athlete population has garnered most of the research and public attention, while the largest athletic population, high school athletes, has been largely overlooked. The hypotheses state that individuals with a concussion history will have worse cognitive and motor performance and that this trend will be divergent with age. That is, the previously concussed individuals will exhibit worse performance, and will be divergently worse from the control group with age. With this in mind, the three investigations focus on cognitive and motor performance in three age groups (i.e. 20, 40, and 60 year olds), in those with and without an adolescent concussion history. The first investigation assessed cognition between concussion history and control groups, within age groups. Using a standard computer-based, clinical concussion assessment, processing speed, attention, learning, working memory accuracy and working memory speed were quantified for each concussion group by age. There were no differences between the concussion history and control groups, within age. The second investigation assessed gait spatio-temporal, kinematic, and toe clearance variables. Again, no significant concussion history group differences were observed in the multivariate assessment for the gait spatio-temporal, kinematic, and toe clearance variables. In addition, there appeared to be no pattern suggesting that a concussion history adversely affects gait, across age. The final investigation assessed skill acquisition, implicit learning, and the internal timing mechanism between concussion history and control groups, within age. Again, there was no consistent pattern to suggest an adverse relationship between concussion history and motor performance, across age. Considering this set of observations, there does not appear to be a long-term, negative relationship between adolescent concussion history and cognition or motor performance in this population.PhDKinesiologyUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     Quantum to classical transition via fuzzy measurements on high gain spontaneous parametric down-conversion

    We consider the high gain spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a non collinear geometry as a paradigmatic scenario to investigate the quantum-to-classical transition by increasing the pump power, that is, the average number of generated photons. The possibility of observing quantum correlations in such macroscopic quantum system through dichotomic measurement will be analyzed by addressing two different measurement schemes, based on different dichotomization processes. More specifically, we will investigate the persistence of non-locality in an increasing size n/2-spin singlet state by studying the change in the correlations form as nn increases, both in the ideal case and in presence of losses. We observe a fast decrease in the amount of Bell's inequality violation for increasing system size. This theoretical analysis is supported by the experimental observation of macro-macro correlations with an average number of photons of about 10^3. Our results enlighten the practical extreme difficulty of observing non-locality by performing such a dichotomic fuzzy measurement.Comment: 15 pages, 18 figure

    Quasielastic electron- and neutrino-nucleus scattering in a continuum random phase approximation approach

    We present a continuum random phase approximation approach to study electron- and neutrino-nucleus scattering cross sections, in the kinematic region where quasielastic scattering is the dominant process. We show the validity of the formalism by confronting inclusive (e,e′e,e') cross sections with the available data. We calculate flux-folded cross sections for charged-current quasielastic antineutrino scattering off 12^{12}C and compare them with the MiniBooNE cross-section measurements. We pay special emphasis to the contribution of low-energy nuclear excitations in the signal of accelerator-based neutrino-oscillation experiments.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures.
