    Fijación de la no-unión del proceso ancóneo mediante tornillo. Estudio retrospectivo en 13 casos clínicos

    En este estudio se hace una evaluación retrospectiva de la técnica de fijación con tornillo del proceso ancóneo no unificado en una serie de 13 casos. Los resultados de la cirugía (con un seguimiento de 2 años de media) fueron considerados "excelentes" o "buenos" en 12 o 13 casos, y todos los animales mejoraron el grado de cojera. En el 92% de los codos se consiguió una unión ósea completa del proceso ancóneo, y en el 70%, un estancamiento de la artrosis. La tasa de complicaciones fue del 15%, todas ellas de carácter muy leve.

    Technological properties of maize tortillas produced by microwave nixtamalization with variable alkalinity

    This research was conducted to determine the quality, physicochemical, textural, compositional, nutritional, viscoamylographic and sensory properties of maize tortillas produced with a Modified tortilla-making process (MTMP) of variable alkalinity (0.125, 0.25 and 0.5% Ca(OH)2 w/w) and compared to the commercial brand MASECA ®. In general, tortillas from MTMP showed higher pH, total color difference (ΔE), tensile strength/cutting force, protein, lipids, crude fibre, lysine, tryptophan, in vitro protein digestibility and lower Hunter L value, loss of weight during cooking and moisture content than MASECA® tortillas. No significant differences were found in the sensory analysis of 22 descriptors of tortillas made from MASECA® and MTMP with Ca(OH)2 concentrations of 0.125 and 0.25% (w/w). However, panelist identified principal effects on changes in four attributes (aroma, appearance, flavor, and after taste flavor) and seven descriptors in tortillas from MTMP prepared with the maximum lime concentration (0.5% w/w). Microwave nixtamalization produce tortillas with acceptable physicochemical, textural, quality, compositional/nutritional and pasting properties.Key words: Maize, modified nixtamalization, tortillas, technological properties

    A segmented period-luminosity relation for nearby extragalactic δ\delta Scuti stars

    The period-luminosity relations (PLR) of Milky Way δ\delta Scuti (δ\delta Sct) stars have been described to the present day by a linear relation. However, when studying extragalactic systems such as the Magellanic Clouds and several dwarf galaxies, we notice for the first time a non-linear behaviour in the PLR of δ\delta Sct stars. Using the largest sample of 3700\sim 3700 extragalactic δ\delta Sct stars from data available in the literature -mainly based on OGLE and SuperMACHO survey in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC)- we obtain that the best fit to the period-luminosity (MVM_V) plane is given by the following piecewise linear relation with a break at logP=1.03±0.01\log{P} = -1.03 \pm 0.01 (or 0.093±0.0020.093 \pm 0.002 d) for shorter periods (sp) and longer periods (lp) than the break-point: MVsp=7.08(±0.25)logP5.74(±0.29);logP<1.03M_V^{sp} = -7.08 (\pm 0.25) \log{P} -5.74 (\pm 0.29) ;\hspace{5pt} \log{P} < -1.03 MVlp=MVsp+4.38(±0.32)(logP+1.03(±0.01));logP1.03M_V^{lp} = M_V^{sp} + 4.38 (\pm 0.32) \cdot (\log{P} + 1.03 (\pm 0.01));\hspace{5pt} \log{P} \geq -1.03 Geometric or depth effects in the LMC, metallicity dependence, or different pulsation modes are discarded as possible causes of this segmented PLR seen in extragalactic δ\delta Sct stars. The origin of the segmented relation at 0.09\sim 0.09 days remains unexplained based on the current data.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 table.     Direct writing of optical microresonators in a lab-on-a-chip for label-free biosensing

    Whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators are promising optical structures for microfluidic label-free bio-sensors mainly due to their high sensitivity, but from a practical point of view they present numerous constraints that make their use in real laboratory diagnosis application difficult. Herein we report on a monolithic lab on a chip fabricated by a hybrid femtosecond laser micromachining approach, for label-free biosensing. It consists of a polymer WGM microresonator sensor integrated inside a glass microfluidic chip, presenting a refractive index change sensitivity of 61 nm per RIU. The biosensing capabilities of the device have been demonstrated by exploiting the biotin-streptavidin binding affinity, obtaining a measurable minimum surface density increase of 67 x 10(3) molecules per mu m(2)

    Spin configuration in a frustrated ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic thin film system

    We have studied the magnetic configuration in ultrathin antiferromagnetic Mn films grown around monoatomic steps on an Fe(001) surface by spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and ab-initio-parametrized self-consistent real-space tight binding calculations in which the spin quantization axis is independent for each site thus allowing noncollinear magnetism. Mn grown on Fe(001) presents a layered antiferromagnetic structure. In the regions where the Mn films overgrows Fe steps the magnetization of the surface layer is reversed across the steps. Around these defects a frustration of the antiferromagnetic order occurs. Due to the weakened magnetic coupling at the central Mn layers, the amount of frustration is smaller than in Cr and the width of the wall induced by the step does not change with the thickness, at least for coverages up to seven monolayers.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

    Plant identification via adaptive combination of transversal filters

    For least mean-square (LMS) algorithm applications, it is important to improve the speed of convergence vs the residual error trade-off imposed by the selection of a certain value for the step size. In this paper, we propose to use a mixture approach, adaptively combining two independent LMS filters with large and small step sizes to obtain fast convergence with low misadjustment during stationary periods. Some plant identification simulation examples show the effectiveness of our method when compared to previous variable step size approaches. This combination approach can be straightforwardly extended to other kinds of filters, as it is illustrated with a convex combination of recursive least-squares (RLS) filters.Publicad

    Continuous and Localized Mn Implantation of ZnO

    We present results derived from continuous and localized 35 keV (55)Mn(+) ion implantations into ZnO. Localized implantations were carried out by using self-ordered alumina membranes as masks leading to ordered arrays of implanted volumes on the substrate surfaces. Defects and vacancies in the small implantation volumes of ZnO were generated due to the implantation processes besides the creation of new phases. Rapid thermal annealing was applied in the case of continuous implantation. The samples were characterized by HRSEM, GIXRD, Raman spectroscopy and RBS/C. Magnetic characterization of the samples pointed out appreciable differences among the samples obtained by the different implantation methods. This fact was mainly attributed to the different volume/surface ratios present in the implanted zones as well as to the increase of Mn atom concentrations along the grain frontiers in the nanostructured surfaces. The samples also showed a ferromagnetic transition phase at temperature value higher than room temperature
