Marley (Marlay) has finished his second round of quarterly conference meetings this year. Since this will be his last year as Presiding Elder of the Cincinnati District, he desires to see the district in a flourishing condition at the end of his appointment. Marley wants to know what Finley thinks about the proposed division of the city of Cincinnati into different districts so as to put part in one district and one part in another. He then asks Finley for an opinion on Sen.Thomas Corwin\u27s recent speech (February 11,1847 -- regarding Mexican-American War). Marley sees Corwin as one of the few U.S. senators with a moral conscience. Abstract Number - 1217https://digitalcommons.owu.edu/finley-letters/2197/thumbnail.jp

Marley (Marlay) writes to Finley bewailing the state of the country and the church. With regard to the church, he is very upset to see principle men attempting to ruin each other\u27s reputations. He has less trust in men generally than ever before. The spirit of religion is low in his district. He does not think there will be a separation (North and South) of the denomination before the next General Conference, if ever. Marley (Marlay) writes in support of Finley\u27s work as chaplain at the Ohio Penitentiary. He has complete faith in Finley\u27s abilities, but is uncertain that the prisoners are actually capable of redemption. Marley has completed his third round on the district and things are still moving along in Kentucky. He pontificates about the MEC South General Conference which has just taken place in Petersburg, VA, bewailing the morally inconsistent stance of a pro-slavery episcopacy. Marley (Marlay) has been doing well, all things considered. He says Finley and Brother Robert Spencer are the only presiding elders who have collected money for him. He is in considerable debt but he has been treated with great kindness. He is currently serving the Union Circuit, where the current activity is excision -- dropping and expelling folks from membership. He has still not recovered from his fractured leg. Marley speaks glowingly of Rev. Howard Solomon, currently serving the Xenia charge. Abstract Number - 183https://digitalcommons.owu.edu/finley-letters/1181/thumbnail.jp

Marley (Marlay) was recently appointed presiding elder of the Chillicothe District. He writes to Finley, currently serving as presiding elder of the Dayton District, about his new position. He had difficulty finding a house for himself and his family, but thanks to the efforts of Brother Andrew McNeal, a home has been rented for him in Frankfort. He has attended quarterly meetings at Chillicothe, Piketon, Portsmouth, Brush Creek, West Union, Hillsborough and Washington. He confides in Finley that he might not be well suited for the work of presiding elder, but resolves to do his best. He asks Finley for clarification regarding charges of mal-administration. Who decides a case -- the chair or the conference? Abstract Number - 102https://digitalcommons.owu.edu/finley-letters/1100/thumbnail.jp

Marley (Marlay) provides a full account of the troubles in Cincinnati following the schism which resulted in the division of the MEC north and south. On the border between Ohio and Kentucky, the Cincinnati churches experienced defections of many members to the MECS. Marley is particularly upset with George W. Maley, who has aligned himself with the MECS, and attempted to create a new MECS society in town, made up of defecting members of existing MEC churches. Many of the rich men from Wesley Chapel are now gone. Furthermore, he has taken the Maysville congregation into the Augusta Circuit.
