Geobase Information System Impacts on Space Image Formats

    Get PDF
As Geobase Information Systems increase in number, size and complexity, the format compatability of satellite remote sensing data becomes increasingly more important. Because of the vast and continually increasing quantity of data available from remote sensing systems the utility of these data is increasingly dependent on the degree to which their formats facilitate, or hinder, their incorporation into Geobase Information Systems. To merge satellite data into a geobase system requires that they both have a compatible geographic referencing system. Greater acceptance of satellite data by the user community will be facilitated if the data are in a form which most readily corresponds to existing geobase data structures. The conference addressed a number of specific topics and made recommendations

Several YF-12C airplane analog control systems were converted to a digital system. Included were the air data computer, autopilot, inlet control system, and autothrottle systems. This conversion was performed to allow assessment of digital technology applications to supersonic cruise aircraft. The digital system was composed of a digital computer and specialized interface unit. A large scale mathematical simulation of the airplane was used for integration testing and software checkout

Developing an On-Line Interactive Health Psychology Module.

On-line teaching material in health psychology was developed which ensured a range of students could access appropriate material for their course and level of study. This material has been developed around the concept of smaller 'content chunks' which can be combined into whole units of learning (topics), and ultimately, a module. On the basis of the underlying philosophy that the medium is part of the message, we considered interactivity to be a key element in engaging the student with the material. Consequently, the key aim of this development was to stimulate and engage students, promoting better involvement with the academic material, and hence better learning. It was hoped that this was achieved through the development of material including linked programmes and supporting material, small Java Scripts and basic email, forms and HTML additions. This material is outlined as are some of the interactive activities introduced, and the preliminary student and tutor experience described

Immersed nano-sized Al dispersoids in an Al matrix; effects on the structural and mechanical properties by Molecular Dynamics simulations

We used molecular dynamics simulations based on a potential model in analogy to the Tight Binding scheme in the Second Moment Approximation to simulate the effects of aluminum icosahedral grains (dispersoids) on the structure and the mechanical properties of an aluminum matrix. First we validated our model by calculating several thermodynamic properties referring to the bulk Al case and we found good agreement with available experimental and theoretical data. Afterwards, we simulated Al systems containing Al clusters of various sizes. We found that the structure of the Al matrix is affected by the presence of the dispersoids resulting in well ordered domains of different symmetries that were identified using suitable Voronoi analysis. In addition, we found that the increase of the grain size has negative effect on the mechanical properties of the nanocomposite as manifested by the lowering of the calculated bulk moduli. The obtained results are in line with available experimental data.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures. Submitted to J. Phys: Condens. Matte

    Recent advances on IMF research

Here I discuss recent work on brown dwarfs, massive stars and the IMF in general. The stellar IMF can be well described by an invariant two-part power law in present-day star-formation events within the Local Group of galaxies. It is nearly identical in shape to the pre-stellar core mass function. The majority of brown dwarfs follow a separate IMF. Evidence from globular clusters and ultra-compact dwarf galaxies has emerged that IMFs may have been top heavy depending on the star-formation rate density. The IGIMF then ranges from bottom heavy at low galaxy-wide star formation rates to being top-heavy in galaxy-scale star bursts.Comment: 6 pages, LaTeX, to appear in The Labyrinth of Star Formation, 18-22 June 2012, Crete, (eds.) The influence of left ventricular hypertrophyon survival in patients with coronaryartery disease: do race and gender matter?

AbstractObjectivesWe sought to determine the overall prognostic importance of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) among patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), as well as to determine whether this risk varies as a function of race or gender.BackgroundLeft ventricular hypertrophy is more prevalent among blacks and women than their counterparts. Blacks and women also have higher mortality with coronary disease.MethodsWe studied records of 2,461 patients (19% black, 42% women) diagnosed with CAD at cardiac catheterization between 1990 and 1998 from a single academic center. Left ventricular hypertrophy was defined using standard echocardiographic measures. Cox proportional hazards models were used for adjusted survival analyses. Mean patient follow-up was three years.ResultsPatients with LVH were older (68 vs. 65 years, p < 0.01), more often women (54% vs. 36%, p < 0.01), and black (25% vs. 16%, p < 0.01), and had higher unadjusted three-year mortality rates than patients without LVH (42% vs. 34%, p < 0.01). Left ventricular hypertrophy remained an independent predictor of mortality after adjusting for other clinical risk factors (hazard ratio 1.56, 95% confidence interval 1.35 to 1.80) with prognostic importance equivalent to that of left ventricular ejection fraction. Although the relative risk of LVH did not vary by race or gender, the attributable risk of LVH was greater in blacks and women.ConclusionsClinicians should consider the prognostic importance of LVH when assessing risk in patients with CAD. Because LVH is more common among black and women patients with CAD, it partially accounts for racial and gender differences in survival

Molecular dynamics simulations of lead clusters

Molecular dynamics simulations of nanometer-sized lead clusters have been performed using the Lim, Ong and Ercolessi glue potential (Surf. Sci. {\bf 269/270}, 1109 (1992)). The binding energies of clusters forming crystalline (fcc), decahedron and icosahedron structures are compared, showing that fcc cuboctahedra are the most energetically favoured of these polyhedral model structures. However, simulations of the freezing of liquid droplets produced a characteristic form of ``shaved'' icosahedron, in which atoms are absent at the edges and apexes of the polyhedron. This arrangement is energetically favoured for 600-4000 atom clusters. Larger clusters favour crystalline structures. Indeed, simulated freezing of a 6525-atom liquid droplet produced an imperfect fcc Wulff particle, containing a number of parallel stacking faults. The effects of temperature on the preferred structure of crystalline clusters below the melting point have been considered. The implications of these results for the interpretation of experimental data is discussed.Comment: 11 pages, 18 figues, new section added and one figure added, other minor changes for publicatio

Soil, Snow, Weather, and Sub-Surface Storage Data from a Mountain Catchment in the Rain–Snow Transition Zone

A comprehensive hydroclimatic data set is presented for the 2011 water year to improve understanding of hydrologic processes in the rain-snow transition zone. This type of dataset is extremely rare in scientific literature because of the quality and quantity of soil depth, soil texture, soil moisture, and soil temperature data. Standard meteorological and snow cover data for the entire 2011 water year are included, which include several rain-on-snow events. Surface soil textures and soil depths from 57 points are presented as well as soil texture profiles from 14 points. Meteorological data include continuous hourly shielded, unshielded, and wind corrected precipitation, wind speed, air temperature, relative humidity, dew point temperature, and incoming solar and thermal radiation data. Sub-surface data included are hourly soil moisture data from multiple depths from 7 soil profiles within the catchment, and soil temperatures from multiple depths from 2 soil profiles. Hydrologic response data include hourly stream discharge from the catchment outlet weir, continuous snow depths from one location, intermittent snow depths from 5 locations, and snow depth and density data from ten weekly snow surveys. Though it represents only a single water year, the presentation of both above and below ground hydrologic condition makes it one of the most detailed and complete hydro-climatic datasets from the climatically sensitive rainsnow transition zone for a wide range of modeling and descriptive studies.
