    Efficacy and Damage Diagnosis of Reinforced Concrete Columns and Joints Strengthened with FRP Ropes Using Piezoelectric Transducers

    Recent research has indicated that the implantation of a network of piezoelectric transducer patches in element regions of potential damage development, such as the beam–column joint (BCJ) area, substantially increases the efficacy and accuracy of the structural health monitoring (SHM) methods to identify damage level, providing a reliable diagnosis. The use of piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducers for the examination of the efficiency of an innovative strengthening technique of reinforced concrete (RC) columns and BCJs is presented and commented on. Two real-scale RC BCJ subassemblages were constructed for this investigation. The columns and the joint panel of the second subassemblage were externally strengthened with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (C-FRP) ropes. To examine the efficiency of this strengthening technique we used the following transducers: (a) PZT sensors on the ropes and the concrete; (b) tSring linear variable displacement transducers (SLVDTs), diagonally installed on the BCJ, to measure the shear deformations of the BCJ panel; (c) Strain gauges on the internal steel bars. From the experimental results, it became apparent that the PZT transducers successfully diagnosed the loading step at which the primary damage occurred in the first BCJ subassemblage and the damage state of the strengthened BCJ during the loading procedure. Further, data acquired from the diagonal SLVDTs and the strain gauges provided insight into the damage state of the two tested specimens at each step of the loading procedure and confirmed the diagnosis provided by the PZT transducers. Furthermore, data acquired by the PZT transducers, SLVDTs and strain gauges proved the effectiveness of the applied strengthening technique with C-FRP ropes externally mounted on the column and the conjunction area of the examined BCJ subassemblages

    Cracking and Fiber Debonding Identification of Concrete Deep Beams Reinforced with C-FRP Ropes against Shear Using a Real-Time Monitoring System

    Traditional methods for estimating structural deterioration are generally costly and inefficient. Recent studies have demonstrated that implementing a network of piezoelectric transducers mounted to critical regions of concrete structural members substantially increases the efficacy of the structural health monitoring (SHM) method. This study uses a recently developed electro-mechanical-admittance (EMA)-based SHM system for real-time damage diagnosis of carbon FRP (C-FRP) ropes installed as shear composite reinforcement in RC deep beams. The applied SHM technique uses the frequency response measurements of a network of piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) patches. The proposed strengthening methods using C-FRP ropes as ETS and NSM shear reinforcement and the applied anchorage techniques significantly enhanced the strength and the overall performance of the examined beams. The retrofitted beams exhibited increased shear capacity and improved post-peak response with substantial ductility compared with the brittle failure of the non-strengthened specimens. The health condition and the potential debonding failure of the applied composite fiber material were also examined and quantified using the proposed SHM technique. Damage quantification of C-FRP ropes is achieved by comparing and assessing the values of several statistical damage indices. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed monitoring system successfully diagnosed the region where the damage occurred by providing early warning of the forthcoming critical shear cracking of concrete and C-FRP rope debonding failures. Furthermore, the internal PZT transducers showed sound indications of the C-FRP rope’s health condition, demonstrating a direct correlation with the mechanical performance of the fibers

    Cracking Diagnosis in Fiber-Reinforced Concrete with Synthetic Fibers Using Piezoelectric Transducers

    The addition of short fibers in concrete mass offers a composite material with advanced properties, and fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) is a promising alternative in civil engineering applications. Recently, structural health monitoring (SHM) and damage diagnosis of FRC has received increasing attention. In this work, the effectiveness of a wireless SHM system to detect damage due to cracking is addressed in FRC with synthetic fibers under compressive repeated load. In FRC structural members, cracking propagates in small and thin cracks due to the presence of the dispersed fibers and, therefore, the challenge of damage detection is increasing. An experimental investigation on standard 150 mm cubes made of FRC is applied at specific and loading levels where the cracks probably developed in the inner part of the specimens, whereas no visible cracks appeared on their surface. A network of small PZT patches, mounted to the surface of the FRC specimen, provides dual-sensing function. The remotely controlled monitoring system vibrates the PZT patches, acting as actuators by an amplified harmonic excitation voltage. Simultaneously, it monitors the signal of the same PZTs acting as sensors and, after processing the voltage frequency response of the PZTs, it transmits them wirelessly and in real time. FRC cracking due to repeated loading ad various compressive stress levels induces change in the mechanical impedance, causing a corresponding change on the signal of each PZT. The influence of the added synthetic fibers on the compressive behavior and the damage-detection procedure is examined and discussed. In addition, the effectiveness of the proposed damage-diagnosis approach for the prognosis of final cracking performance and failure is investigated. The objectives of the study also include the development of a reliable quantitative assessment of damage using the statistical index values at various points of PZT measurements

    An Electromechanical Impedance-Based Application of Realtime Monitoring for the Load-Induced Flexural Stress and Damage in Fiber-Reinforced Concrete

    Effective real-time structural health monitoring in concrete structures is paramount to evaluating safety conditions and the timely maintenance of concrete structures. Especially, the presence of discrete fibers in fiber-reinforced concrete restrains crack propagation into small and thin cracks, which increases the difficulty in detecting damage. In this study, an array of piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) transducers was applied to study the effects of external load-induced flexural stress and damage in fiber-reinforced concrete beams using the electromechanical impedance (EMI) or electromechanical admittance (EMA) methods. Beams were subjected to a four-point bending test under repeatable loading, while PZTs evaluated corresponding flexural stress and induced damage simultaneously. Due to the influence of the medium’s stress fields in the different types of wave propagation in structural elements, PZT transducers measurements are accordingly affected under variable stress fields, in addition to the effect of the higher level of damage that occurred in the medium. According to the results of the tests, variation in EMA signatures, following flexural stress and gradual damage changes, provided convincing evidence for predicting stress and damage development

    Electro-Mechanical Impedance-Based Structural Health Monitoring of Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Specimens under Four-Point Repeated Loading

    Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) has shown significant promise in enhancing the safety and reliability of civil infrastructures. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) has recently become essential due to the increasing demand for the safety and sustainability of civil infrastructures. Thus, SHM provides critical benefits for future research to develop more advanced monitoring systems that effectively detect and diagnose the damage in FRC structures. This study investigates the potential of an Electro-Mechanical Impedance (EMI) based SHM system for detecting cracks in FRC prisms subjected to four-point repeated loading. For the needs of this research, an experimental investigation of three FRC specimens with the dimensions 150 × 150 × 450 (mm) were subjected to three different loading levels where no visual cracks formed on their surface. Next, prisms were subjected to reloading until they depleted their load-carrying capacity, resulting in pure bending fracture at the mid-span. A network of nine cement paste coated Piezoelectric lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) transducers have been epoxy bonded to the surface of the FRC prisms, and their frequency signal measurements were utilized for quantitative damage assessment. The observed changes in the frequency response of each PZT sensor are evaluated as solid indications of potential damage presence, and the increasing trend connotes the severity of the damage. The well-known conventional static metric of the Root Mean Square Deviation (RMSD) was successfully used to quantify and evaluate the cracking in FRC specimens while improving the efficiency and accuracy of damage detection. Similarly, the dynamic metric of a new statistical index called “moving Root Mean Square Deviation” (mRMSD) was satisfactorily used and compared to achieve and enhance accuracy in the damage evaluation process

    Structural Pounding Effect on the Seismic Performance of a Multistorey Reinforced Concrete Frame Structure

    During intense ground motion excitations, the pounding between adjacent buildings may result in extensive structural damage. Despite the provision of regulations regarding the minimum separation gap required to prevent structural collisions, the majority of existing structures are poorly separated. The modern seismic design and assessment of structures are based on the definition of acceptable response levels in relation to the intensity of seismic action, which is usually determined by an acceptable probability of exceedance. From this point of view, the seismic performance of a typical eight-storey reinforced concrete (RC) frame structure is evaluated in terms of pounding. In particular, the performance is evaluated using six different separation gap distances as a fraction of the EC8 minimum distance. As the height of the adjacent structure affected the required separation distance, the examined RC structure was assumed to interact with four idealized rigid structures of one to four storeys. The typical storey height was equal between the examined structures; therefore, collision could occur at the diaphragm level. To this end, incidental dynamic analyses (IDAs) were performed, and the fragility curves for different limit states were obtained for each case. Finally, the seismic fragility was combined with the hazard data to evaluate the seismic performance probabilistically

    Fiber Reinforced Polymer Debonding Failure Identification Using Smart Materials in Strengthened T-Shaped Reinforced Concrete Beams

    The favorable contribution of externally bonded fiber-reinforced polymer (EB-FRP) sheets to the shear strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) beams is widely acknowledged. Nonetheless, the premature debonding of EB-FRP materials remains a limitation for widespread on-site application. Once debonding appears, it is highly likely that brittle failure will occur in the strengthened RC structural member; therefore, it is essential to be alerted of the debonding incident immediately and to intervene. This may not be always possible, particularly if the EB-FRP strengthened RC member is located in an inaccessible area for fast inspection, such as bridge piers. The ability to identify debonding immediately via remote control would contribute to the safer application of the technique by eliminating the negative outcomes of debonding. The current investigation involves the detection of EB-FRP sheet debonding using a remotely controlled electromechanical admittance (EMA)-based structural health monitoring (SHM) system that utilizes piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) sensors. An experimental investigation on RC T-beams strengthened for shear with EB-FRP sheets has been performed. The PZT sensors are installed at various locations on the surface of the EB-FRP sheets to evaluate the SHM system’s ability to detect debonding. Additionally, strain gauges were attached on the surface of the EB-FRP sheets near the PZT sensors to monitor the deformation of the FRP and draw useful conclusions through comparison of the results to the wave-based data provided by the PZT sensors. The experimental results indicate that although EB-FRP sheets increase the shear resistance of the RC T-beams, premature failure occurs due to sheet debonding. The applied SHM system can sufficiently identify the debonding in real-time and appears to be feasible for on-site applications
