The Influence of Custodial, Maintenance, and Residence Life Services on Student Satisfaction in Residence Halls
This study is important because it examines the relationship between students\u27 overall satisfaction with their residence hall living experience and students\u27 satisfaction with various custodial, maintenance, and residence life services. The study, conducted in university residence halls at a Midwestern Carnegie Classification Research extensive university, used a backward step-wise multiple linear regression model with data from a 57-item survey to predict students\u27 satisfaction with their overall residence hall experiences. The strongest predictors were students\u27 comfort and socializing within the living unit. Only one maintenance or custodial item, students\u27 satisfaction with exterior landscape maintenance, v^as a significant predictor of the dependent variable
Gauge Invariance and Confinement in Noncompact Simulations of SU(2)
Wilson loops have been measured at strong coupling, , on a
lattice in a noncompact simulation of pure SU(2) in which random compact gauge
transformations impose a kind of lattice gauge invariance. The Wilson loops
suggest a confining potential.Comment: 3 pages, requires PiCTeX, talk presented at Lattice '93, UNM-gicns
Characterizing Scalability Issues in Spreadsheet Software using Online Forums
In traditional usability studies, researchers talk to users of tools to
understand their needs and challenges. Insights gained via such interviews
offer context, detail, and background. Due to costs in time and money, we are
beginning to see a new form of tool interrogation that prioritizes scale, cost,
and breadth by utilizing existing data from online forums. In this case study,
we set out to apply this method of using online forum data to a specific
issue---challenges that users face with Excel spreadsheets. Spreadsheets are a
versatile and powerful processing tool if used properly. However, with
versatility and power come errors, from both users and the software, which make
using spreadsheets less effective. By scraping posts from the website Reddit,
we collected a dataset of questions and complaints about Excel. Specifically,
we explored and characterized the issues users were facing with spreadsheet
software in general, and in particular, as resulting from a large amount of
data in their spreadsheets. We discuss the implications of our findings on the
design of next-generation spreadsheet software
New Business Activity and Employment Dynamics in the Inner City: The Case of Phoenix Arizona
Inner city revitalization efforts centered on fostering new business activity are controversial because they assume that the job creating capacity of new businesses is capable of impacting aggregate employment levels in inner city neighborhoods. Given this controversy, this article examines the link between new business activity and inner city employment growth in Phoenix, Arizona. Analytical results highlight job creation from new business activity but a net negative association between new business activity and employment growth stemming from the loss of jobs from large employers in inner city neighborhoods. This relationship highlights that encouraging new business activity is not necessarily a bad idea for local residents and customers, but should not be viewed as a panacea for all inner city problems. Instead, new business activity should be viewed as one component of multifaceted initiatives to revitalize inner city neighborhoods
Predictors of Academic Success for Freshmen Residence Hall Students
Grade point average for residence hall freshmen (N = 1, 167; 52% male, 90% White, 74% in-state), is related significantly to precollege characteristics (high school rank, gender, ethnicity, parental education, divorced/separated parents, self-perception of abilities, expectation of honors or changing major) and environmental variables (learning community membership, academic college)
A Multi-Regional Input-Output (MRIO) Analytical Framework for Assessing the Regional Economic Impacts of Rising Water Prices
Understanding the regional economic implications of rising water and wastewater services is important, because these services are household necessities. To date, however, there are few (if any) studies examining the link between water costs and indicators of economic vitality such as jobs, output, and regional income. To advance work on this particular topic, this paper proposes a novel methodology that estimates changes in household spending information from the Consumer Expenditure Survey (CES) for a particular change in water prices. This vector of final demand changes is then linked to multi-regional input-output (MRIO) models to estimate the regional economic impacts associated with changes in consumer spending patterns. To demonstrate this methodology, three water price increase scenarios are derived, and associated changes in final demand estimated
Noncompact Lattice Simulations of SU(2) Gauge Theory
Wilson loops have been measured at strong coupling, , on a
lattice in noncompact simulations of pure SU(2) without gauge fixing. There is
no sign of quark confinement.Comment: 4 pages, UNM-93-nl
A Call to Action: Person-Centered Care Aligned with Reproductive Justice for Incarcerated Pregnant People with Substance Use Disorder
Although research has proven that jails and prisons are ineffective in preventing or reducing substance use among pregnant people, the USA continues to rely heavily on the criminal legal system as its intervention. Pregnant people with an opioid use disorder are more likely to experience incarceration than pregnant people without an opioid use disorder. In some states, pregnant people are transported from jail to prison through the process of safekeeping in order to receive physical or mental health care that the jail does not provide, despite conviction status. When pregnant and postpartum safekeepers with an opioid use disorder experience incarceration, they face barriers related to continuity of physical and behavioral health care, have limited access to maternal-infant attaching opportunities at delivery, and are at risk for an opioid-related overdose upon release. This commentary describes clinical care challenges that impact the reproductive health needs of pregnant safekeepers with an opioid use disorder and offers solution-focused innovations to reduce harm. Such solutions include uninterrupted optimal dosing of medication and integrated prenatal clinics, specialized substance use disorder treatment, and opportunities to integrate lactation programs and perinatal dyadic-focused services
