Disordering of InGaAs/GaAs strained quantum well structures induced by rare gas ion implantation
In this work we have investigated the effect of various implantation schemes on In(0.2)GaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs Single Quantum Well, where the implanted species are Argon and Helium, with doses in the range 1E12 to 1E14 at cm^2, at energy spanning 270 - 400 KeV and 30 to 50 KeV for Ar and He, respectively. Repetitive annealing processes were carried out between 735 and 870 degree(s)C and the interdiffusion was deduced by photoluminescence measurements. A maximum of 20 nm shift from He ion implanted Quantum Well with an high degree of reconstruction has been recorded, thus allowing the application of this disordering scheme for the realization of optoelectronic devices
Diffusion of biosimilar hemopoietic growth factors use in oncology practice: an Italian experience
Background: Biosimilars of hemopoietic growth factors present an important saving opportunity in oncology. However, while pharmacologists are aware of their potential benefits, biosimilars are still under-used in Italy. Improved information and guided clinical experience may help to increase the clinical acceptance of these drugs. To this aim, a collaborative educational project was set between an Hospital Oncology Unit and the Local Health Care Authority in Pavia, Italy. Methods: The project lasted 12 months. The strategy included an education-information seminar at startup, a reporting meeting at +6 months, electronic prescription monitoring and implementation of pharmacovigilance. The target was set to reach 90% of all naïve patients treated with biosimilars. Results: At the end of the study (2013), a dramatic relative increase in the prescription of biosimilar drugs was noted, with virtually 100% of new patients receiving biosimilar drugs during the last 4 months, with a positive impact on average per capita drug expenses. Active pharmacovigilance did not report any serious adverse drug reactions. An anonymous questionnaire showed that oncologists judged the experience quite positively, acquired a positive attitude toward these drugs and considered biosimilars a relevant saving opportunity, while adherence to prescription guidelines was maintained. Analysis of the year following the end of the project, 2014, showed a persistent prescription change. Conclusions: Results from this local experience suggests that specifically designed pragmatic interventions focused on information-education and monitoring may help in promoting the use and acceptance of biosimilar drugs in the real clinical setting

Risk of hospitalization for heart failure in patients with type 2 diabetes newly treated with DPP-4 inhibitors or other oral glucose-lowering medications: A retrospective registry study on 127,555 patients from the Nationwide OsMed Health-DB Database
Aims Oral glucose-lowering medications are associated with excess risk of heart failure (HF). Given the absence of comparative data among drug classes, we performed a retrospective study in 32 Health Services of 16 Italian regions accounting for a population of 18 million individuals, to assess the association between HF risk and use of sulphonylureas, DPP-4i, and glitazones. Methods and results We extracted data on patients with type 2 diabetes who initiated treatment with DPP-4i, thiazolidinediones, or sulphonylureas alone or in combination with metformin during an accrual time of 2 years. The endpoint was hospitalization for HF (HHF) occurring after the first 6 months of therapy, and the observation was extended for up to 4 years. A total of 127 555 patients were included, of whom 14.3% were on DPP-4i, 72.5% on sulphonylurea, 13.2% on thiazolidinediones, with average 70.7% being on metformin as combination therapy. Patients in the three groups differed significantly for baseline characteristics: age, sex, Charlson index, concurrent medications, and previous cardiovascular events. During an average 2.6-year follow-up, after adjusting for measured confounders, use of DPP-4i was associated with a reduced risk of HHF compared with sulphonylureas [hazard ratio (HR) 0.78; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.62-0.97; P = 0.026]. After propensity matching, the analysis was restricted to 39 465 patients, and the use of DPP-4i was still associated with a lower risk of HHF (HR 0.70; 95% CI 0.52-0.94; P = 0.018). Conclusion In a very large observational study, the use of DPP-4i was associated with a reduced risk of HHF when compared with sulphonylureas

Front-end performance and charge collection properties of heavily irradiated DNW MAPS
Deep N-well (DNW) CMOS monolithic active pixel sensors (MAPS) fabricated in a 130 nm technology have been exposed to gamma-rays up to an integrated dose of about 10 Mrad and subjected to a 100 degrees C/168 h annealing cycle. Device tolerance to total ionizing dose has been evaluated by monitoring the change in charge sensitivity, noise and charge collection properties after each step of the irradiation and annealing campaign. Damage mechanisms and their relation to front-end architecture and sensor features are thoroughly discussed by comparing the response to ionizing radiation of different test structures and based on radiation induced degradation models in single MOS transistors
