Recent AEM Case Study Examples of a Full Waveform Time-Domain System for Near-Surface and Groundwater Applications
Early time or high frequency airborne electromagnetic data (AEM) are desirable for shallow sounding or mapping of resistive areas but this poses difficulties due to a variety of issues, such as system bandwidth, system calibration and parasitic loop capacitance. In an effort to address this issue, a continued system design strategy, aimed at improving its early-channel VTEM data, has achieved fully calibrated, quantitative measurements closer to the transmitter current turn-off, while maintaining reasonably optimal deep penetration characteristics. The new design implementation, known as “Full Waveform” VTEM was previously described by Legault et al. (2012). This paper presents some case-study examples of a Full Waveform helicopter time-domain EM system for near-surface application
Women\u27s experiences on the path to a career in game development
This chapter seeks to identify whether there is a dominant, presupposed career pipeline to a career in game development and then looks for women and women’s experiences at each stage of that pipeline. It concludes that a dominant pipeline does exist and that this pathway both disadvantages women who attempt it and marginalizes other pathways. Along the way women deal with obstacles that can delegitimize their choices and experiences and/or make the assumed pathway inhospitable. This chapter relies on published literature as well as data from the 2014 and 2015 Developer Satisfaction Surveys (DSS) conducted by the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) in partnership with the authors
Gamma Ray Flashes Produced by Lightning Observed at Ground Level by TETRA-II
In its first 2 years of operation, the ground-based Terrestrial gamma ray
flash and Energetic Thunderstorm Rooftop Array(TETRA)-II array of gamma ray
detectors has recorded 22 bursts of gamma rays of millisecond-scale duration
associated with lightning. In this study, we present the TETRA-II observations
detected at the three TETRA-II ground-level sites in Louisiana, Puerto Rico,
and Panama together with the simultaneous radio frequency signals from the
VAISALA Global Lightning Data set, VAISALA National Lightning Detection
Network, Earth Networks Total Lightning Network, and World Wide Lightning
Location Network. The relative timing between the gamma ray events and the
lightning activity is a key parameter for understanding the production
mechanism(s) of the bursts. The gamma ray time profiles and their correlation
with radio sferics suggest that the gamma ray events are initiated by lightning
leader activity and are produced near the last stage of lightning leader
channel development prior to the lightning return stroke.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
Combined anti-AGEs and antioxidant activities of different solvent extracts of Solanum elaeagnifolium Cav. (Solanaceae) fruits during ripening and related to their phytochemical compositions
Oxidative stress and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are known as key factors for the development of diabetic complications such as retinopathy, cataract as well as atherosclerosis and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s diseases. In this context, natural products have been previously identified as promising sources for antioxidant and anti-glycation compounds. The current study focuses on the evaluation of antioxidant and glycation inhibitory activities of different solvent extracts of Solanum elaeagnifolium Cav (Solanaceae) fruits at different ripening stages. The results showed that antioxidant and anti-AGEs activities were significantly influenced by solvents polarities and ripening stages of S. elaeagnifolium Cav. With one exception, methanolic extract of overripe S. elaeagnifolium Cav fruit showed important protective effects against cellular oxidative stress. The aqueous extract showed the highest ABTS+ scavenging ability. Principal component analysis showed that total phenolic and flavonoid contents correlated well with observed antioxidants and anti-glycation activities. These results bring attention to the possible use of S. elaeagnifolium Cav as a valuable source of bioactive compounds exhibiting antioxidant effects and potentially alleviating diabetic complications
