    Detection of Non-Random Galaxy Orientations in X-ray Subclusters of the Coma Cluster

    This study on the Coma cluster suggests that there are deviations from a completely random galaxy orientation on small scales.     High-Tc superconductivity in entirely end-bonded multi-walled carbon nanotubes

    We report that entirely end-bonded multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) can show superconductivity with the transition temperature Tc as high as 12K that is approximately 40-times larger than those reported in ropes of single-walled nanotubes. We find that emergence of this superconductivity is very sensitive to junction structures of Au electrode/MWNTs. This reveals that only MWNTs with optimal numbers of electrically activated shells, which are realized by the end-bonding, can allow the superconductivity due to inter shell effects.Comment: 5 page

    Role of electron-electron and electron-phonon interaction effect in the optical conductivity of VO2

    We have investigated the charge dynamics of VO2 by optical reflectivity measurements. Optical conductivity clearly shows a metal-insulator transition. In the metallic phase, a broad Drude-like structure is observed. On the other hand, in the insulating phase, a broad peak structure around 1.3 eV is observed. It is found that this broad structure observed in the insulating phase shows a temperature dependence. We attribute this to the electron-phonon interaction as in the photoemission spectra.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

    High-Energy Spin Dynamics in La1.69_{1.69}Sr0.31_{0.31}NiO4_4

    We have mapped out the spin dynamics in a stripe-ordered nickelate, La2x_{2-x}Srx_{x}NiO4_{4} with x0.31x \simeq 0.31, using inelastic neutron scattering. We observe spin-wave excitations up to 80 meV emerging from the incommensurate magnetic peaks with an almost isotropic spin-velocity: cs0.32\hbar c_s\sim 0.32 eV \AA, very similar to the velocity in the undoped, insulating parent compound, La2_{2}NiO4_{4}. We also discuss the similarities and differences of the inferred spin-excitation spectrum with those reported in superconducting high-TcT_c cuprates.Comment: 4 figure
