White dwarf masses in magnetic cataclysmic variables: Multi-temperature fits to Ginga data
One method of obtaining the mass of the white dwarf in magnetic cataclysmic variables (mCVs) is through their hard X-ray spectra. However, previous mass estimates using this method give lower limits because the temperature of the plasma in the post-shock region (where the hard X-rays are emitted) is lower than the temperature of the shock itself. In AM Her systems, the additional cooling of the post-shock plasma by cyclotron emission will further lower the derived mass. Here we present estimates of the masses of the white dwarf in 13 mCVs derived using Ginga data and a model in which X-rays are emitted from a multi-temperature emission region with the appropriate temperature and density profile. We include in the model reflection from the surface of the white dwarf and a partially ionized absorber. We are able to achieve good fits to the data. We compare the derived masses with previous estimates and the masses for larger samples of isolated white dwarfs and those in CVs
Innovation Institution and Spatial Transfer of Energy Industry: The Case of Jiangsu Province, China
This study aims to explore the effect of innovation institution on spatial transfer of energy industry in Jiangsu, China. We focus on the disparity of innovation and energy industry, and analyze the spatial transfer difference in different types of energy industry, rather than view energy industry as a whole. The study demonstrates the spatial change of energy industry at regional level and maps the spatial pattern at city level. The study chooses intellectual property rights (IPRs) protection intensity, authorization patents and local research and development (R&D) investment as the proxy of innovation. Using official data and employing panel fixed-effect model at city-industry level, we conclude (a) innovation abilities significantly influence the spatial transfer of energy industry in Jiangsu. Especially, due to the different time, IPRs protection, patent counts, and R&D investment have different effects on different regions in Jiangsu; (b) 2010 is an important turning point for energy industry development in Jiangsu, and after 2010, the energy industry begins to shift to the middle and northern Jiangsu, whereas the spatial pattern of energy industry in coastal cities is basically unchanged; (c) there is a great difference between the regions in Jiangsu Province, and industrial upgrading has not been achieved in northern Jiangsu
X-ray Polarization Signatures of Compton Scattering in Magnetic Cataclysmic Variables
Compton scattering within the accretion column of magnetic cataclysmic
variables (mCVs) can induce a net polarization in the X-ray emission. We
investigate this process using Monte Carlo simulations and find that
significant polarization can arise as a result of the stratified flow structure
in the shock-ionized column. We find that the degree of linear polarization can
reach levels up to ~8% for systems with high accretion rates and low
white-dwarf masses, when viewed at large inclination angles with respect to the
accretion column axis. These levels are substantially higher than previously
predicted estimates using an accretion column model with uniform density and
temperature. We also find that for systems with a relatively low-mass white
dwarf accreting at a high accretion rate, the polarization properties may be
insensitive to the magnetic field, since most of the scattering occurs at the
base of the accretion column where the density structure is determined mainly
by bremsstrahlung cooling instead of cyclotron cooling.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, accepted by MNRA
Convolutional Networks for Object Category and 3D Pose Estimation from 2D Images
Current CNN-based algorithms for recovering the 3D pose of an object in an
image assume knowledge about both the object category and its 2D localization
in the image. In this paper, we relax one of these constraints and propose to
solve the task of joint object category and 3D pose estimation from an image
assuming known 2D localization. We design a new architecture for this task
composed of a feature network that is shared between subtasks, an object
categorization network built on top of the feature network, and a collection of
category dependent pose regression networks. We also introduce suitable loss
functions and a training method for the new architecture. Experiments on the
challenging PASCAL3D+ dataset show state-of-the-art performance in the joint
categorization and pose estimation task. Moreover, our performance on the joint
task is comparable to the performance of state-of-the-art methods on the
simpler 3D pose estimation with known object category task
Crystal orientation and thickness dependence of superconductivity on tetragonal FeSe1-x thin films
Superconductivity was recently found in the simple tetragonal FeSe structure.
Recent studies suggest that FeSe is unconventional, with the symmetry of the
superconducting pairing state still under debate. To tackle these problems,
clean single crystals and thin films are required. Here we report the
fabrication of superconducting beta-phase FeSe1-x thin films on different
substrates using a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Quite
interestingly, the crystal orientation, and thus, superconductivity in these
thin films is sensitive to the growth temperature. At 320C, films grow
preferably along c-axis, but the onset of superconductivity depends on film
thickness. At 500C, films grow along (101), with little thickness dependence.
These results suggest that the low temperature structural deformation
previously found is crucial to the superconductivity of this material
