Social media use and adolescents’ self-esteem and appearance satisfaction: The moderating role of school motivation
Background: This large-scale investigation speaks to the growing concern associated with the use of social media on the psychological wellbeing of adolescents. The study explored time spent using social networking sites as a predictor of teenagers’ self-esteem and appearance satisfaction and the protective role that motivation in school might play. Method: The sample comprised 10,546 adolescents at age 11 and 14 years, from the UK’s Millennium Cohort Study. Multiple linear regression determined cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between use of social media and self-esteem and appearance satisfaction. Time spent using social networking sites significantly predicted teenagers’ self-esteem and appearance satisfaction levels. Results: A significant interaction emerged with school motivation and social networking in relation to appearance satisfaction, suggesting that school motivation may help to buffer the negative effects of online social networking. Conclusion: In response to the ongoing concerns around the increase in adolescents who struggle with difficulties relating to their mental health, the finger of blame is frequently pointed to screen-based methods of social communication. It is anticipated that present findings will prompt the development of new interventions that target time spent using online social networking sites, particularly among teenage girls, during this new era of COVID-19-induced social isolation
Effect of Tripping and Domain-Width on Transonic Buffet on Periodic NASA-CRM Airfoils
Transonic buffet is an instability characterized by shock-oscillations and
separated boundary-layers. High-fidelity simulations have typically been
limited to narrow domains to be computationally feasible, overly constraining
the flow and introducing modelling errors. Depending on the boundary-layer
state upstream of the interaction, different buffet features are observed.
High-fidelity simulations were performed on the periodic NASA-CRM wing at
moderate Reynolds number to assess sensitivity of the two-dimensional transonic
buffet to boundary-layer state and domain width. Simulations were
cross-validated against RANS/URANS and global stability analysis and excellent
agreement was found near the onset. By varying the boundary-layer tripping
amplitude, laminar, transitional, and turbulent buffet interactions were
obtained. All cases consisted of a single shock and low-frequency oscillations
. The transitional interaction also exhibited reduced shock
movement, a increase in , and energy content at higher
frequencies . Span-wise domain studies showed sensitivity at
the shock location and near the trailing edge. We conclude that the span-width
must be greater than the trailing-edge boundary-layer thickness to obtain
span-independent solutions. For largely separated cases, the sensitivity to
span-width increased and variations across the span were observed. This was
found to be associated to a loss of two-dimensionality of the flow
A Preliminary Study Looking at the Use of Mindful Compassion and Cannabis Suppositories for Anodyspareunia among Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM)
Research on the use of cannabis rectal suppositories for analgesia is limited. Few trials have evaluated the combined use of mindfulness and cannabis suppositories for anodyspareunia in men who have sex with men (MSM). This preliminary study, including a randomised control trial (RCT) and content analysis, assessed the effectiveness of an online mindful-compassion and cannabis suppository intervention among 52 British MSM (aged 18–50) who predominantly identified as bottoms (recipients of anal sex). Participants were randomly allocated to one of four groups based on whether they were using cannabis suppositories: adjunct cannabis suppository and mindful-compassion (CSMF), cannabis suppository only (CS), mindful compassion only (MF) and care as usual/control (CAU). Assessments measuring mindful compassion, sexual functioning, sexual self-efficacy, well-being, and anodyspareunia levels were completed at weeks 0, 4, and 12. Anodyspareunia levels were lower in the CSMF group compared to the other groups (CS/MF/CAU), p = 0.031. Feedback revealed that participants felt mindful compassion potentiated the effects of cannabis suppositories during sexual intimacy, reducing pain and enhancing sexual self-efficacy, sexual functioning, and well-being. This preliminary study warrants larger-scale investigation to establish the role of cannabis suppositories and mindful compassion in reducing anodyspareunia
