Making a place for poetry: Response in an adult writing group
This dissertation examines how writers respond to other writer\u27s work in the context of a community poetry group. A qualitative study of the poetry group, including participant-observation and tape recording of group meetings, analysis of conversation during meetings, collection of documents, and open-ended interviewing of participants, was undertaken over a period of ten months. Through narrative analysis of the data, one of the primary units of which is the single poem plus the group\u27s response to that poem, the author attempted to create a credible interpretation of the activities and conversations of the group which addresses the question of what constitutes good response in the context of this particular group.
The study found that, despite the explicitly stated purpose of providing suggestions about what may need work in a poem, poets in this group generally did not use response to revise their poems. The group\u27s real work was in the discussion of the poem, a collaboration to create a space in which the poet\u27s authority to say what his poem means is protected at the same time as the group is claiming the authority to write new versions of the poem. Several things complicate and shape the act of response, including tacit ideas about proper or helpful response, the struggle over the authority to assign meaning to the text, and the necessity of maintaining harmony. But the act of response is important because it is part of the work of the poet, because it teaches group members how to be poets, and because it creates a communal space for poetry to exist in, not as text, but as work.
The complicated picture of response which emerges is examined, and implications for the way we look at what it means for a writing group to be successful, the way that we structure writing groups in classrooms, and the way that we look at literacy, as something that is practiced not something that is learned, are explored

Robust Group Linkage
We study the problem of group linkage: linking records that refer to entities
in the same group. Applications for group linkage include finding businesses in
the same chain, finding conference attendees from the same affiliation, finding
players from the same team, etc. Group linkage faces challenges not present for
traditional record linkage. First, although different members in the same group
can share some similar global values of an attribute, they represent different
entities so can also have distinct local values for the same or different
attributes, requiring a high tolerance for value diversity. Second, groups can
be huge (with tens of thousands of records), requiring high scalability even
after using good blocking strategies.
We present a two-stage algorithm: the first stage identifies cores containing
records that are very likely to belong to the same group, while being robust to
possible erroneous values; the second stage collects strong evidence from the
cores and leverages it for merging more records into the same group, while
being tolerant to differences in local values of an attribute. Experimental
results show the high effectiveness and efficiency of our algorithm on various
real-world data sets

Learning English: An ecological perspective of a child with autism
"Inclusion in the EFL classroom is probably one of the key elements in teaching a new language, because the language itself is full of different and new things for students. This investigation attempts to see how inclusive our educational system is in our country surrounding a 9-year-old boy named âTadeoâ diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The general purpose of this study is to reaffirm how important it is to know how EFL teachers can handle situations where a kid or adult with ASD might be, by using the proper tools and terminology to create an inclusive environment for those students. Therefore, this study was built and developed through interviews made to the parents, grandmother, and teachers of the indirect participant, where three important elements were the focus. These elements were: motor, language and social aspects. With all the gathered information, analysis was made, to create an easier way to read it and fully understand the disorder. As a result, all the answers, results and evidence gave fruitful information about autism, along with the literature part of the study. Specifically, on how to manage EFL classrooms or students where ASD students may be, or students diagnosed with different disorders"
Stomatal abundance and distribution in Prosopis strombulifera plants growing under different Iso-Osmotic salt
Changes in several environmental parameters are thought to affect stomatal development. Under salt stress, plants can regulate their transpiration flux through a better control of the stomatal opening (as a short-term response) and through modifications of leaf anatomy (as a long-term response). We investigate how leaf micromorphology (stomatal abundance and distribution) of the halophyte Prosopis strombulifera (a spiny shrub particularly abundant in high-salinity areas of central Argentina) responds to different water status when plants are subjected to different salt treatments (NaCl, Na2SO4 and their iso-osmotic mixture). Different salt treatments on P. strombulifera plants influenced leaf micromorphological traits differently. In this study, Na2SO4-treated plants showed an increase in stomatal density (SD) and epidermal cell density (ECD) (with smaller stomata) at moderate and high salinity (â1.9 and â2.6 MPa), whereas in NaCl and NaCl + Na2SO4 treated plants, a decrease in these variables was observed. In Na2SO4-treated plants, transpiration was the highest at moderate and high salinity, with the highest content of ABA registered. A possible explanation is that, despite of these high ABA levels, there is no inhibition in stomatal opening, resulting in increased water loss, growth inhibition, and acceleration of senescence processes. We demonstrate that P. strombulifera responds to progressive salt stress by different salts changing the leaf development, particularly in Na2SO4-treated plants, leading to structural modifications in leaf size and micro-morphology of leaf cells.Fil: Reginato, Mariana Andrea. Physiological responses of a halophytic shrub to salt stress by Na2SO4 and NaCl: oxidative damage and the role of polyphenols in antioxidant protection
Salt stress conditions lead to increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in plant cells. Halophytes have the ability to reduce these toxic ROS by means of a powerful antioxidant system that includes enzymatic and non-enzymatic components. In this research, we used the halophytic shrub Prosopis strombulifera to investigate whether the ability of this species to grow under increasing salt concentrations and mixtures was related to the synthesis of polyphenolic compounds and to the maintenance of leaf pigment contents for an adequate photosynthetic activity. Seedlings of P. strombulifera were grown hydroponically in Hoagland's solution, gradually adding Na2SO4 and NaCl separately or in mixtures until reaching final osmotic potentials of â1, â1.9 and â2.6 MPa. Control plants were allowed to develop in Hoagland's solution without salt. Oxidative damage in tissues was determined by H2O2 and malondialdehyde content. Leaf pigment analysis was performed by high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet, and total phenols, total flavonoids, total flavan-3-ols, condensed tannins, tartaric acid esters and flavonols were spectrophotometrically assayed. Treatment with Na2SO4 increased H2O2 production and lipid peroxidation in tissues and induced a sharp increase in flavonoid compounds (mainly flavan-3-ols) and consequently in the antioxidant activity. Also, Na2SO4 treatment induced an increased carotenoid/chlorophyll ratio, which may represent a strategy to protect photosystems against photooxidation. NaCl treatment, however, did not affect H2O2 content, lipid peroxidation, pigments or polyphenols synthesis. The significant accumulation of flavonoids in tissues under Na2SO4 treatment and their powerful antioxidant activity indicates a role for these compounds in counteracting the oxidative damage induced by severe salt stress, particularly, ionic stress. We demonstrate that ionic interactions between different salts in salinized soils modify the biochemical and morpho-physiological responses of P. strombulifera plants to salinity.Fil: Reginato, Mariana Andrea.
