Direct observation of Anderson localization of matter-waves in a controlled disorder
We report the observation of exponential localization of a Bose-Einstein
condensate (BEC) released into a one-dimensional waveguide in the presence of a
controlled disorder created by laser speckle . We operate in a regime allowing
AL: i) weak disorder such that localization results from many quantum
reflections of small amplitude; ii) atomic density small enough that
interactions are negligible. We image directly the atomic density profiles vs
time, and find that weak disorder can lead to the stopping of the expansion and
to the formation of a stationary exponentially localized wave function, a
direct signature of AL. Fitting the exponential wings, we extract the
localization length, and compare it to theoretical calculations. Moreover we
show that, in our one-dimensional speckle potentials whose noise spectrum has a
high spatial frequency cut-off, exponential localization occurs only when the
de Broglie wavelengths of the atoms in the expanding BEC are larger than an
effective mobility edge corresponding to that cut-off. In the opposite case, we
find that the density profiles decay algebraically, as predicted in [Phys. Rev.
Lett. 98, 210401 (2007)]. The method presented here can be extended to
localization of atomic quantum gases in higher dimensions, and with controlled
interactions
Tailoring Anderson localization by disorder correlations in 1D speckle potentials
We study Anderson localization of single particles in continuous, correlated,
one-dimensional disordered potentials. We show that tailored correlations can
completely change the energy-dependence of the localization length. By
considering two suitable models of disorder, we explicitly show that disorder
correlations can lead to a nonmonotonic behavior of the localization length
versus energy. Numerical calculations performed within the transfer-matrix
approach and analytical calculations performed within the phase formalism up to
order three show excellent agreement and demonstrate the effect. We finally
show how the nonmonotonic behavior of the localization length with energy can
be observed using expanding ultracold-atom gases
Famines et disettes au Rwanda
Famines and Food Shortages in Rwanda. — In spite of periodic food crises due to natural phenomena, the former Rwanda was self-sufficient. Food shortages did not take on famine proportions until their effects became cumulative and especially when the agricultural regions in the North and Center were affected. This kingdom was characterized economically by regional exchanges of compensation that were based in part on local market places. They usually prevented local market places. They usually prevented local shortages from transforming themselves into famines spreading to the rest of the country. Lugan Bernard. Famines et disettes au Rwanda. In: Cahiers d'outre-mer.
Commercial relations between Rwanda and the outside world at the end of the pre-colonial period were dépendent on two circuits, one turned towards the North and the other to the West. In the northern axis, ex change s bore on Katwe sait usually bartered for cattle from Rwanda. Westward, the transactions, favoured by the economie complementarity between the two shores of lake Kivu, bore as much on food supplies as upon handicraft productions. The circulation of goods between such distant areas as the border regions of lake Tanganyika and lake Kivu or the highlands of Rwanda was arranged from peripheral trading centers. The professionals or semi-professionals traders were profîtminded, as could be expected.
Commercial Activities in Southern Kivu during the XIXth century, with Kinyaga, Rwanda, taken as an example.
During the pre-Colonial period, Kinyaga was the center of a commercial network that linked northern Tanganyika, western Kivu and Rwanda. Business exchanges were based on the complementarity of goods and produce, and were conducted for the most part in the market places.
This economic center underwent significant changes towards the end of the XIXth century following the increase of Moslem influence in the region.
Lugan Bernard, Nyagahene Antoine. Le sel dans le Rwanda ancien
Salt in Former Rwanda. During the pre-Colonial period, salt was, in Rwanda as in all of Central Africa, a rare and much sought after food product. Because they were unable to procure quality salt in Katwe, the majority of the population of former Rwanda was obliged to have recourse to local production, which had a plant base.
Lacustrine salt and salt produced locally was found in the commercial network that existed round the market places and which was supplied by peddling.
