Gas leak-detection system
Data monitoring of gas leakage in satellites and spacecraft is facilitated by adding gaseous radioisotopes to cold compressed gas and mounting a detector in the thrust nozzle
Molecular Pathogenesis of Cholangiocarcinoma
Epidemiological data from the last years show an increasing trend of incidence and mortality of cholangiocarcinoma (CC) worldwide. Many pathophysiologic aspects of this neoplasia are still unknown and need to be fully discovered. However, several progresses were recently made in order to establish the molecular mechanisms involved in the transformation and growth of malignant cholangiocytes. The principal concept that at least seems to be established is that cholangiocarcinogenesis is a multistep cellular process evolving from a normal condition of the epithelial biliary cells through a chronic inflammation status ending with malignant transformation. The bad prognosis related to CC justifies why a better identification of the molecular mechanisms involved in the growth and progression of this cancer is required for the development of effective preventive measures and valid treatment regimens. This Paper describes the scientific progresses made in the last years in defining the molecular pathways implicated in the generation of this devastating disease
Thermal fluid dynamics of water droplet in sprinkler irrigation : Phenomenological analysis and modelling
A thorough understandingof the factors affecting spray flow and evaporation losses in sprinkler irrigation is important for developing appropriate water conservation strategies. To properly tackle this problem ,relevant theoretical and experimental studies have been carried out during the second half of the last century.
Notwithstanding all these efforts, the phenomenon of aerial evaporation of droplets
exiting from a nozzle has not been fully understood yet and something new has to be added to the description of the process to reach a better assessment of the events.
To this end, a mathematical model for irrigation sprinkler droplet ballistics , based on a simplified dynamic approach to the
phenomenon ,has been presented. The model proves to fully match the kinematic results obtained by more complicated procedures.
Moreover, fiel trials showed the model to reliably estimate spray evaporation losses caused by environmental conditions. Further analytical and experimental activities are needed to gain a better understanding of water flow and waste in sprinkler irrigation practice
On the graded resolution of ideals of a few general fat points of Pn
AbstractWe compute the graded Betti numbers of the ideal of “few” (at most n) fat points of Pn with support in general position, under the assumption that the multiplicities are all equal except one, which has to be at least twice as much.We do so by performing a sequence of splittings and applying the graded version given by Fatabbi (J. Algeb. 242 (2001) 92) of a result of Eliahou and Kervaire (J. Algeb. 129 (1990) 1).In doing so, we also prove that the ideal of at most n general fat points of Pn is always splittable and we compute the graded Betti numbers of the product of two ideals whose generators involve disjoint sets of indeterminates
PCR-Independent Detection of Bacterial Species-Specific 16S rRNA at 10 fM by a Pore-Blockage Sensor.
A PCR-free, optics-free device is used for the detection of Escherichia coli (E. coli) 16S rRNA at 10 fM, which corresponds to ~100-1000 colony forming units/mL (CFU/mL) depending on cellular rRNA levels. The development of a rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective nucleic acid detection platform is sought for the detection of pathogenic microbes in food, water and body fluids. Since 16S rRNA sequences are species specific and are present at high copy number in viable cells, these nucleic acids offer an attractive target for microbial pathogen detection schemes. Here, target 16S rRNA of E. coli at 10 fM concentration was detected against a total RNA background using a conceptually simple approach based on electromechanical signal transduction, whereby a step change reduction in ionic current through a pore indicates blockage by an electrophoretically mobilized bead-peptide nucleic acid probe conjugate hybridized to target nucleic acid. We investigated the concentration detection limit for bacterial species-specific 16S rRNA at 1 pM to 1 fM and found a limit of detection of 10 fM for our device, which is consistent with our previous finding with single-stranded DNA of similar length. In addition, no false positive responses were obtained with control RNA and no false negatives with target 16S rRNA present down to the limit of detection (LOD) of 10 fM. Thus, this detection scheme shows promise for integration into portable, low-cost systems for rapid detection of pathogenic microbes in food, water and body fluids
On the hadamard product of degenerate subvarieties
We consider generic degenerate subvarieties Xi ⊂ Pn. We determine an integer N, depending on the varieties, and for n≥N we compute dimension and degree formulas for the Hadamard product of the varieties Xi. Moreover, if the varieties Xi are smooth, their Hadamard product is smooth too. For n < N, if the Xi are generically di-parameterized, the dimension and degree formulas still hold. However, the Hadamard product can be singular and we give a lower bound for the dimension of the singular locus
Analytical modeling of MHD flow over a permeable rotating disk in the presence of soret and dufour effects: Entropy analysis.
The main concern of the present article is to study steady magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) flow, heat transfer and entropy generation past a permeable rotating disk using a semi numerical/analytical method named Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM). The results of the present study are compared with numerical quadrature solutions employing a shooting technique with excellent correlation in special cases. The entropy generation equation is derived as a function of velocity, temperature and concentration gradients. Effects of flow physical parameters including magnetic interaction parameter, suction parameter, Prandtl number, Schmidt number, Soret and Dufour number on the fluid velocity, temperature and concentration distributions as well as entropy generation number are analysed and discussed in detail. Results show that increasing the Soret number or decreasing the Dufour number tends to decrease the temperature distribution while the concentration distribution is enhanced. The averaged entropy generation number increases with increasing magnetic interaction parameter, suction parameter, Prandtl number, and Schmidt number
Overview of case definitions and contact tracing indications in the 2022 monkeypox outbreak
Background: In 2022, a new outbreak of the Mpox virus occurred outside of Africa, its usual endemic area. The virus was detected in European, American, Asian, and Oceanian countries where Mpox is uncommon or had not been reported previously and where the spread was rapid. The study aims to compare the case definition and the indications for contact tracing in case of Mpox infection among the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), and four European Countries. Methods: From August 2022 to November 2022, we conducted research, first on the WHO and ECDC official websites and then on the official websites of the Ministry of Health or National Health Agencies of four European Countries (Italy, France, Spain, and Portu-gal). All reports found were compared to enlighten the differences in the definition of the case and indications for contact tracing. Results: The WHO divides the case definition into four categories: suspected, probable, confirmed, and dis-carded, while the ECDC divides cases into confirmed and probable. The ECDC defines contact as close and others, while the WHO divides it into high, medium, and minimal risk. The four countries analyzed show heterogeneity in both the case definitions and the indications for contact tracing. Conclusions: Our analysis revealed heterogeneity in the case definition between the WHO and ECDC. Different countries followed different indications or have given their indications for both the case definition and contact tracing indications. Harmonization strengthens public health preparedness and response and creates unified communication
