Mechanical Ventilation and Clinical Outcomes in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction: A Retrospective Observational Study
Patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and respiratory impairment may be treated with either invasive or non-invasive mechanical ventilation (MV). However, there has been little testing of non-invasive MV in the setting of AMI. Our objective was to evaluate the incidence and associated clinical outcomes of patients with AMI who were treated with non-invasive or invasive MV
This paper presents the development of a new approach to skin segmentation and hand gesture recognition in order to compose applications for Human Computer Interaction requiring real-time computing. Tests performed indicate the possibility of using the approach with low-cost equipment
Monitoramento Automatizado de Ambientes
This paper presents the preliminary results of an automated computer vision system for the enviromnent monitoring context. For this purpose, we used the OpenSURF method to extract local features of predefined patterns from static images, and stored into a database. The proposed approach was applied over video sequences captured sequentially from three cameras, and therefore the patterns identified are converted into objects of interest in a monitored enviromnent
Impact of phlorotannin extracts from fucus vesiculosus on human gut microbiota
Recent studies indicate that plant polyphenols could be pointed as potential prebiotic candidates since they may interact with the gut microbiota, stimulating its growth and the production of metabolites. However, little is known about the fate of brown seaweeds’ phlorotannins during their passage throughout the gastrointestinal tract. This work aimed to evaluate the stability and bioaccessibility of Fucus vesiculosus phlorotannins after being submitted to a simulated digestive process, as well as their possible modulatory effects on gut microbiota and short-chain fatty acids production following a fermentation procedure using fecal inoculates to mimic the conditions of the large intestine. The stability of phlorotannins throughout the gastrointestinal tract was reduced, with a bioaccessibility index between 2 and 14%. Moreover, slight alterations in the growth of certain commensal bacteria were noticed, with Enterococcus spp. being the most enhanced group. Likewise, F. vesiculosus phlorotannins displayed striking capacity to enhance the levels of propionate and butyrate, which are two important short-chain fatty acids known for their role in intestinal homeostasis. In summary, this work provides valuable information regarding the behavior of F. vesiculosus phlorotannins along the gastrointestinal tract, presenting clear evidence that these compounds can positively contribute to the maintenance of a healthy gastrointestinal condition.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Automated classification of eclipsing binary systems in the VVV Survey
With the advent of large-scale photometric surveys of the sky, modern science witnesses the dawn of big data astronomy, where automatic handling and discovery are paramount. In this context, classification tasks are among the key capabilities a data reduction pipeline must possess in order to compile reliable data sets, to accomplish data processing with an efficiency level impossible to achieve by means of detailed processing and human intervention. The VISTA Variables of the Vía Láctea Survey, in the southern part of the Galactic disc, comprises multiepoch photometric data necessary for the potential discovery of variable objects, including eclipsing binary systems (EBs). In this study, we use a recently published catalogue of one hundred EBs, classified by fine-tuning theoretical models according to contact, detached, or semidetached classes belonging to the tile d040 of the VVV. We describe the method implemented to obtain a supervised machine-learning model, capable of classifying EBs using information extracted from the light curves of variable object candidates in the phase space from tile d078. We also discuss the efficiency of the models, the relative importance of the features and the future prospects to construct an extensive data base of EBs in the VVV survey.Fil: Daza Perilla, Ingrid Vanessa. MOF-mediated synthesis of supported Fe-doped Pd nanoparticles under mild conditions for magnetically recoverable catalysis
Metal-organic framework (MOF)-driven synthesis is considered as a promising alternative for the development of new catalytic materials with well-designed active sites. This synthetic approach is used here to gradually transform a new bimetallic MOF, with Pd and Fe as the metal components, by the in situ generation of aniline under mild conditions. This methodology results in a compositionally homogeneous nanocomposite formed by Fe-doped Pd nanoparticles that, in turn, are supported on iron oxide-doped carbon. The nanocomposite has been fully characterized by several techniques such as IR and Raman spectroscopy, TEM, XPS, and XAS. The performance of this nanocomposite as an heterogeneous catalyst for hydrogenation of nitroarenes and nitrobenzene coupling with benzaldehyde has been evaluated, proving it to be an efficient and reusable catalyst
