    Local male breeding density affects extra-pair paternity in a south temperate population of grass wrens Cistothorus platensis

    Demographic factors can affect the frequency of extra-pair paternity (EPP) in birds, as the distribution and availability of potential mates in both space and time influence the rate of encounters between females and males. Over three breeding seasons, we intensively studied the breeding system of a south temperate population of grass wrens Cistothorus platensis by genotyping 73 broods (319 nestlings) and estimating EPP rates for those broods. Using five different radii (80, 160, 240, 320 and 400 m) around each nest with assigned paternity, we examined the effects of local breeding synchrony, male breeding density and adult sex ratio (ASR) on the EPP rate. The majority of extra-pair offspring (~80%) were sired by neighboring males. Neither local breeding synchrony nor ASR consistently explained the EPP rate variation as their effects were only statistically significant within 320 and 400 m. However, the EPP rate increased as the local male breeding density increased within every radius category, strongly suggesting that neighboring male abundance might play an important role in the extra-pair mating behavior in this species.     Full lifetime perspectives on the costs and benefits of lay date variation in tree swallows

    Animals must balance various costs and benefits when deciding when to breed. The costs and benefits of breeding at different times have received much attention, but most studies have been limited to investigating short-term season-to-season fitness effects. However, breeding early, versus late, in a season may influence lifetime fitness over many years, trading off in complex ways across the breeder?s lifepan. In this study, we examined the complete life histories of 867 female tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) breeding in Ithaca, New York, between 2002 and 2016. Earlier breeders outperformed later breeders in short-term measures of reproductive output and offspring quality. Though there were weak indications that females paid long-term future survival costs for breeding early, lifetime fledgling output was markedly higher overall in early-breeding birds. Importantly, older females breeding later in the season did not experience compensating life-history advantages that suggested an alternative equal-fitness breeding strategy. Rather, most or all of the swallows appear to be breeding as early as they can, and differences in lay dates appear to be determined primarily by differences in individual quality or condition. Lay date had a significant repeatability across breeding attempts by the same female, and the first lay date of females fledged in our population was strongly influenced by the first lay date of their mothers, indicating the potential for ongoing selection on lay date. By examining performance over the entire lifespan of a large number of individuals, we were able to clarify the relationship between timing of breeding and fitness and gain new insight into the sources of variability in this important life history trait.Fil: Winkler, David Ward.     How do Southern House Wrens Troglodytes aedon musculus achieve polygyny? An experimental approach

    I designed two experiments to evaluate how polygyny is achieved in Southern House Wrens (Troglodytes aedon musculus) breeding in a south-temperate population. In the first experiment, I manipulated territory attractiveness by adding high quality nesting sites (nest-boxes) to 50% of monogamous territories (n = 24) and evaluated if males can attract a second female when defending high quality resources. In the second experiment, I simulated high male mortality early in the breeding season by removing 30 territorial males in plots where wrens had been breeding in nest-boxes (n = 47 territories). The first experiment did not induce polygyny: although females switched from breeding in tree cavities to nest-boxes when boxes were erected on their territory, none of the neighbouring females who did not receive a box moved to breed as a secondary female. The male removal experiment did induce polygyny: of 21 experimentally widowed females, 38% bred as secondary females of neighboring males—who expanded their territories in the absence of a defending male—and accepted polygyny even in the presence of neighbouring territories held by bachelor males. Secondary females mated to polygynous males were rarely helped by the male while feeding nestlings, but primary and secondary females overlapped very little in the use of space. Hence, females mated to polygynous males may share parental care disproportionally but not territorial resources. Female attachment to territories and exclusive use of space together with male’s expansion of territories to achieve polygyny suggests that Southern House Wrens engage in sublease polygyny.Fil: Llambias, Paulo.     Why Monogamy? Comparing House Wren Social Mating Systems In Two Hemispheres

    The evolutionary basis for strict monogamy remains unclear. It has been suggested that monogamy might be maintained in cases where: 1) female fertility is synchronous within the population, 2) resources are evenly distributed so that male territories are of similar quality, 3) male-male competition prevents males from acquiring more than one female or 4) female-female aggression prevents additional females from settling in monogamous territories. During 2003-2007, I carried out research on the social mating system and parental behavior of a migratory population of northern house wren (Troglodytes aedon aedon) and a resident population of southern house wren (Troglodytes aedon bonariae) breeding in nest-boxes in the U.S. and Argentina, respectively. Northern house wren females bred more synchronously than southern house wrens, so synchrony does not explain the higher prevalence of polygyny in the north. The addition of nest-boxes to increase territory quality of occupied territories did not stimulate polygyny in southern house wrens. Only removal of territorial males and floaters increased the polygyny rate in the southern house wren, suggesting intense competition for breeding territories. Strong competition for breeding sites could be a consequence of higher adult survival in the south leading to lack of enough territories to breed in relation to population density. Indeed, southern house wrens bred in smaller territories than northern house wrens. Northern and southern house wrens visited a caged female close to the primary and secondary boxes in similar proportions. Both were aggressive to the caged female close to the primary nest-box, but a higher proportion of southern house wren females were aggressive when the cage was installed close to the secondary box. Female aggression in the southern house wren might be related to the smaller size of territories. Indeed, southern house wren polygynous males' territories were of similar size to northern house wren territories, but monogamous southern house wren territories were smaller than northern house wren territories. I suggest that southern house wren males are monogamous because they are unable to monopolize more than one female. This pattern seems to be dominated by two processes: male habitat saturation and female territoriality

    Parental risk-taking behaviour and nest defence during the nestling rearing stage in Northern House Wrens Troglodytes aedon

    Risk-taking behaviour of short lived nesting birds is often explained in relation to the reproductive value of offspring (the reproductive value hypothesis) and the harm that the absence of parental care can cause to nestlings (risk of harm-to-offspring hypothesis). The reproductive value hypothesis predicts that the risk assumed by adults should increases with nestling age, whereas the risk of harm-to-offspring hypothesis predicts the opposite pattern. We assessed the risk-taking behaviour of nesting males and females Northern House Wrens, Troglodytes aedon, faced with a predation threat (plastic owl model) when rearing 3-4 and 10-12 days old nestlings. We used the time elapsed until parents first entered the nest-box as a measure of risk-taking behaviour and alarm calling rate as a proxy of nest defence. Females resumed sooner parental activities when exposed to the model when nestlings were young, supporting the risk of harm-to-offspring hypothesis. In contrast, the time lasted to resume parental duties by males did not differ between nestling ages. Alarm calling rate increased with the nestling stage, as predicted by the reproductive value hypothesis. We suggest that nesting House Wrens responded to both nestling requirements and to the reproductive value of thebrood, assuming greater risks when nestlings are more vulnerable and a more intense nest defence when nestlings are older.Fil: Fernandez, Gustavo Javier.     Sexual differences in risk-taking behaviour of the Southern house wren during the nestling rearing stage

    When faced with a predator near the nest, breeding birds faced a dilemma: to continue providing parental care to their offspring exposing themselves to risk or to desert the nest for a brief period of time, exposing their offspring to harm due to the suspension of parental brooding and feeding. In this study, we analysed the response of nesting Southern house wrens (Troglodytes aedon musculus) to a predator model placed near the nest. The experiment was performed in 56 nests when nestling were 3–4 or 10–12 days old. The model (a plastic decoy of the Great Horned Owl Bubo virginianus) was placed at 3 m from the nest. Parent risk-taking was measured as the time elapsed for males and females to resume parental activities during the exposition to the model. We found that males and females delayed parental visits when exposed to the predator model, but females resumed them faster than males, irrespectively of the nesting stage. We also found that males refused to enter to the nest more frequently than females when exposed to the predator model. No effect of breeding experience or nesting stages was noted in the risk taking behaviour of adults. We suggest that sexual differences detected in this species reflect the higher ability of females to cope with the nestling needs and its lower lifetime expectancy.Fil: Fernandez, Gustavo Javier.     Similar patterns of parental provisioning in a monogamous and a polygynous population of the House Wren

    In the House Wren (Troglodytes aedon), polygyny is characterized by males' partial desertion, males providing little or no help in feeding the nestlings of one of their mates. We evaluated whether contributions to feeding nestlings and patterns of provisioning by partially deserted females can explain geographic variation in the species' rate of polygyny. From 2003 to 2007, we studied two populations differing in polygyny rate (U.S., 40%; Argentina, 2%). We induced polygyny in the monogamous population by removing males from their territories before the onset of egg laying. We predicted that if patterns of parental care are related to variation in the social mating system, monogamous males should contribute more in the monogamous population than in the polygynous population, in the monogamous population partially deserted females should not compensate for the lack of help by feeding at rates higher than do aided females, and partial desertion should be more costly in the monogamous population. Monogamous males of the two populations did not differ significantly in their contribution to provisioning. Females' pattern of provisioning was also similar; partially deserted females fed nestlings at a rate higher than did aided females but did not fully compensate for the lack of help. Furthermore, the cost of male desertion seems greater in the polygynous population, as the breeding and fledging success of poorly aided females were lower. We suggest that the male's contributions to parental care and the patterns of unaided females' feeding cannot explain the geographic variation in the House Wren's mating systems.Fil: Llambias, Paulo.     Latitudinal differences in life-history traits and parental care in northern and southern temperate zone House Wrens

    South temperate songbirds differ from northtemperate species in life-history traits, having greater adultsurvival, smaller clutch size, longer developmental periodsand extended parental care. Due to its broad distribution,the House Wren, Troglodytes aedon, is an excellent modelto evaluate selective pressures that may influence themaintenance of present clutch size. Here we report data onlife-history traits and parental care of socially monogamousHouse Wrens from a north temperate and a south temperatepopulation. Southern House Wrens exhibited smallerclutch sizes and longer developmental periods thanNorthern House Wrens; however, we did not find significantdifferences in adult survival probability betweenpopulations, contrary to a critical prediction of the cost ofreproduction hypothesis. Our data did not support the hypothesisthat smaller clutches are the consequence ofgreater food limitation in the south. Southern wrens havegreater adult body mass but smaller territories; southernnestlings reached a greater proportion of adult body mass6?7 days before fledgling, and provisioning rates to thenest per nestling were greater in the south. We did not findsupport for the hypothesis that reduced clutch size is aconsequence of limited parental activity at the nest assouthern wrens did not reduce parental care during theincubation and nestling stage. Our data better supports theoffspring quality hypothesis; southern wrens invest moreper nestling than northern wrens as provisioning rates pernestling were significantly higher and developmental periodslonger in the south. Published results from TropicalHouse Wrens suggest that neither food limitation nor nestpredation can explain reduced clutches in Central America.We suggest that south temperate and tropical wrens maydiffer in parental investment strategies as tropical wrensseem to invest even less per nestling than north temperatewrensFil: Llambias, Paulo.     Male song diversity and its relation to breeding success in southern house wrens Troglodytes aedon chilensis

    Theory proposes an adaptive relationship between male song complexity, including large song repertoires, and improved breeding success. Evidence supporting these relationships exists but is sometimes mixed or weak. Here we provide a first comprehensive study of the relationship between male song diversity and breeding success in a non-migratory, austral population of house wrens Troglodytes aedon chilensis breeding in Mendoza, Argentina. During a two-year field study, we measured breeding success for a population of 62 males and recorded more than 34 000 songs from a subsample of 26 males. For the latter subsample, we tested for correlations between six measures of song diversity and four canonical measures of annual breeding success. Males that sang with greater overall syllable type diversity and that had larger song repertories paired with females that bred earlier and laid more eggs over the course of the breeding season. However, these males also showed lower levels of immediate song type diversity, as measured by the Levenshtein distance between successive songs. We discuss implications for the evolution of song complexity in this exceptionally widespread species and the selective mechanisms that might influence song complexity in resident populations in the Neotropics compared to migratory populations in the northern hemisphere.Fil: dos Santos, Ednei B..
