Retraction and Generalized Extension of Computing with Words
Fuzzy automata, whose input alphabet is a set of numbers or symbols, are a
formal model of computing with values. Motivated by Zadeh's paradigm of
computing with words rather than numbers, Ying proposed a kind of fuzzy
automata, whose input alphabet consists of all fuzzy subsets of a set of
symbols, as a formal model of computing with all words. In this paper, we
introduce a somewhat general formal model of computing with (some special)
words. The new features of the model are that the input alphabet only comprises
some (not necessarily all) fuzzy subsets of a set of symbols and the fuzzy
transition function can be specified arbitrarily. By employing the methodology
of fuzzy control, we establish a retraction principle from computing with words
to computing with values for handling crisp inputs and a generalized extension
principle from computing with words to computing with all words for handling
fuzzy inputs. These principles show that computing with values and computing
with all words can be respectively implemented by computing with words. Some
algebraic properties of retractions and generalized extensions are addressed as

Nanofibrous insulin/vildagliptin core-shell PLGA scaffold promotes diabetic wound healing
Introduction: Slow wound repair in diabetes is a serious adverse event that often results in loss of a limb or disability. An advanced and encouraging vehicle is wanted to enhance clinically applicable diabetic wound care. Nanofibrous insulin/vildagliptin core-shell biodegradable poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) scaffolds to prolong the effective drug delivery of vildagliptin and insulin for the repair of diabetic wounds were prepared.Methods: To fabricate core-shell nanofibrous membranes, vildagliptin mixture with PLGA, and insulin solution were pumped via separate pumps into two differently sized capillary tubes that were coaxially electrospun.Results and Discussion: Nanofibrous core-shell scaffolds slowly released effective vildagliptin and insulin over 2 weeks in vitro migration assay and in vivo wound-healing models. Water contact angle (68.3 ± 8.5° vs. 121.4 ± 2.0°, p = 0.006) and peaked water absorbent capacity (376% ± 9% vs. 283% ± 24%, p = 0.003) of the insulin/vildagliptin core-shell nanofibrous membranes remarkably exceeded those of a control group. The insulin/vildagliptin-loaded core-shell nanofibers improved endothelial progenitor cells migration in vitro (762 ± 77 cells/mm2 vs. 424.4 ± 23 cells/mm2, p < 0.001), reduced the α-smooth muscle actin content in vivo (0.72 ± 0.23 vs. 2.07 ± 0.37, p < 0.001), and increased diabetic would recovery (1.9 ± 0.3 mm2 vs. 8.0 ± 1.4 mm2, p = 0.002). Core-shell insulin/vildagliptin-loaded nanofibers extend the drug delivery of insulin and vildagliptin and accelerate the repair of wounds associated with diabetes
Effect of sputtering power on friction coefficient and surface energy of co-sputtered titanium and molybdenum disulfide coatings and its performance in micro hot-embossing
Si micromolds are common for fabrication of polymer-based microfluidic devices by hot-embossing because of the well established fabrication methods for Si, e.g., deep reactive ion etching, for favorable surface finish and accuracy. The problems with low yield, poor reproducibility, premature failure and limited lifetime of a Si micromold are induced by high friction and surface adhesion generated during demolding. Therefore, Titanium (Ti) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS[subscript 2]) coatings were deposited on Si micromolds via magnetron co-sputtering at various combinations of target powers to improve its surface properties. Coating composition, crystallographic orientation, roughness, critical load, hardness, friction coefficient and surface energy were measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, scratch testing, nanoindentation, ball-on-disc tribometry and the contact angle method respectively. A statistical design of experiment matrix was used to investigate the effect of the Ti and MoS[subscript 2] target powers on the friction coefficient and surface energy of the coatings. From this designed experiment, it was observed that increasing MoS[subscript 2] target power was associated with increasing surface energy and decreasing friction coefficient and target powers had statistically significant effects on these parameters. Crystallinity, roughness and hardness of the coatings increased with increasing Ti concentration. A mathematical model of the effects of Ti and MoS[subscript 2] target powers on the friction coefficient and surface energy of the coatings has been fit to the experimental results using the response surface method. Uncoated and MoS[subscript 2]–Ti coated Si micromolds were used in hot-embossing for a comparative study on replication performance of uncoated and various coated micromolds. Hotembossed PMMA microstructures showed that coating improve replication performance of Si micromolds. Si micromold coated with co-sputter of Ti and MoS[subscript 2] at power of 300 and 75 W respectively, showed better replication quality among the selected target powers
Comparison of the Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome Between the Criteria for Taiwanese and Japanese and the Projected Probability of Stroke in Elderly Hypertensive Taiwanese
SummaryBackgroundThe cutoff of abdominal circumference for metabolic syndrome (MS) defined by the Bureau of Health Promotion (BHP) of Taiwan for Taiwanese (men, 90cm; women, 80cm) and by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) for Japanese (men, 85cm; women, 90cm) differs. This study aimed to examine the impact of this difference on the prevalence of MS and the impact of an MS diagnosis on the projected risk of stroke in hypertensive Taiwanese.MethodsMS was examined in a sample of 3,472 hypertensive patients (aged 55–80 years; 1,709 women) across Taiwan. The 10-year probability of stroke estimated from the Framingham equation was compared between MS and non-MS patients.ResultsThe prevalence of MS using the BHP criteria was 59.2% using the BHP criteria (95% confidence interval, CI, 57.6–60.8%; men, 52.5%; women, 66.1%) and 48.9% by the IDF criteria (95% CI, 47.2–50.5%; men, 61.3%; women, 36.1%). Both criteria showed that, compared with non-MS, MS has higher predicted 10-year probability of stroke (BHP, 0.153 ± 0.115 vs. 0.133 ± 0.105; IDF, 0.159 ± 0.109 vs. 0.132 ± 0.112; both p < 0.001) because of the difference in women (BHP, 0.143 ± 0.124 vs. 0.102 ± 0.091; IDF, 0.147 ± 0.121 vs. 0.118 ± 0.110; both p < 0.001) rather than men (BHP, p = 0.21; IDF, p = 0.29).ConclusionBoth criteria demonstrate that MS is highly prevalent in elderly hypertensive patients in Taiwan. Additionally in women, but not men, the predicted probability of stroke is higher in MS than in non-MS patients. The diagnosis of MS is potentially useful for identifying elderly hypertensive females with an elevated risk of stroke in Taiwan
Crystallization of Adenylylsulfate Reductase from Desulfovibrio gigas: A Strategy Based on Controlled Protein Oligomerization
Adenylylsulfate reductase (adenosine 5′-phosphosulfate reductase, APS reductase or APSR, E.C.1.8.99.2) catalyzes the conversion of APS to sulfite in dissimilatory sulfate reduction. APSR was isolated and purified directly from massive anaerobically grown Desulfovibrio gigas, a strict anaerobe, for structure and function investigation. Oligomerization of APSR to form dimers–α_2β_2, tetramers–α_4β_4, hexamers–α_6β_6, and larger oligomers was observed during purification of the protein. Dynamic light scattering and ultracentrifugation revealed that the addition of adenosine monophosphate (AMP) or adenosine 5′-phosphosulfate (APS) disrupts the oligomerization, indicating that AMP or APS binding to the APSR dissociates the inactive hexamers into functional dimers. Treatment of APSR with β-mercaptoethanol decreased the enzyme size from a hexamer to a dimer, probably by disrupting the disulfide Cys156—Cys162 toward the C-terminus of the β-subunit. Alignment of the APSR sequences from D. gigas and A. fulgidus revealed the largest differences in this region of the β-subunit, with the D. gigas APSR containing 16 additional amino acids with the Cys156—Cys162 disulfide. Studies in a pH gradient showed that the diameter of the APSR decreased progressively with acidic pH. To crystallize the APSR for structure determination, we optimized conditions to generate a homogeneous and stable form of APSR by combining dynamic light scattering, ultracentrifugation, and electron paramagnetic resonance methods to analyze the various oligomeric states of the enzyme in varied environments
Risk Characteristics of Peri-Implant Infections: A Retrospective Evaluation in a University Consultation Setting
Peri-implantitis is a common biological complication in dentistry. The aim of the present study was to retrospectively analyze risk characteristics in a group of patients referred to a university-based consultation for peri-implantitis. In all, 190 initial cases from 2010 to 2019 were evaluated and descriptively summarized. The evaluation included various parameters such as periodontitis, smoking and oral hygiene status, implant position, type of prosthetic restoration and retention, mucosal quality, and further anamnestic and clinical findings related to the potential risk of developing peri-implantitis. Peri-implantitis was diagnosed in 83% of the cases, with peri-implant mucositis alone in 16% of cases; furthermore, 38% of the patients were diagnosed with active/instable periodontitis, while 14% had stable periodontitis. Residual cement was considered as a potential co-factor of peri-implant inflammation in 43% of cases. Suboptimal implant positioning was found in 19% of patients. Peri-implantitis or peri-implant mucositis was present in about one-third of patients in the absence of smoking and periodontitis factors. Of note, 6% showed no identifiable risk factors. Factors related to an increased risk of peri-implantitis should be taken into consideration when planning implant treatment. Adequate prosthetic implant position, restoration, and cleanability remain important for long-term success
Speeding Up RSA Encryption Using GPU Parallelization
Abstract-Due to the ever-increasing computing capability of high performance computers today, in order to protect encrypted data from being cracked, the bit number used in RSA, a common and practicable public-key cryptosystem, is also getting longer, resulting in increasing operation time spent in executing the RSA algorithm. We also note that while the development of CPU has reached limits, the graphics processing unit (GPU), a highly parallel programmable processor, has become an integral part of today's mainstream computing systems. Therefore, it is a savvy choice to take advantage of GPU computing to accelerate computation of the RSA algorithm and enhance its applicability as well. After analyzing the RSA algorithm, we find that big number operations consume most parts of computing resources. As the benefit acquired from combining Montgomery with GPU-based parallel methods is not high enough, we further introduce the Fourier transform and Newton's method to design a new parallel algorithm to accelerate the computation of big numbers
Square Key Matrix Management Scheme in Wireless Sensor Networks
In this paper we propose a symmetric cryptographic approach named Square Key Matrix Management Scheme (SKMaS) in which a sensor node named Key Distribution Server (KDS) is responsible for the security of key management. When the system starts up, the KDS sends its individual key and two sets of keys to sensor nodes. With the IDs, any two valid sensor nodes, e.g. i and j, can individually identify the corresponding communication keys (CKs) to derive a dynamic shared key (DSK) for encrypting/decrypting messages transmitted between them. When i leaves the underlying network, the CKs and the individually keys currently utilized by i can be reused by a newly joining sensor, e.g. h. However, when h joins the network, if no such previously-used IDs are available, h will be given a new ID, CKs and the individually key by the KDS. The KDS encrypts the CKs, with which an existing node q can communicate with h, with individual key so that only q rather than h can correctly decrypt the CKs. The lemmas and security analyses provided in this paper prove that the proposed system can protect at least three common attacks
Relationship between Obesity-related Hormone Peptides and Quality of Life in Obese Women among Different Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndrome Groups
AbstractThe aim of this study was to explore the relationship between obesity-related hormone peptides and quality of life in obese women among different traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome groups (證型 zhèng xíng). 260 obese women met with age between 20 and 65years old and body mass index (BMI) ≧ 27kg/m2, were recruited. The participants filled out a questionnaire on obese TCM syndrome groups, which was designed by professional TCM doctors, and two questionnaires on quality of life (QOL), WHOQOL-BREF Taiwan version and MOS Short Form-12 (SF-12). Data of biochemical characteristics and obesity-related hormone peptides were collected at the same time. According to the responses provided, the obese subjects were classified into spleen deficiency with dampness encumbrance syndrome (脾虛濕阻證 pí xū shī zǔ zhèng; SDD), stomach heat with dampness encumbrance syndrome (胃熱濕阻證 wèi rè shī zǔ zhèng; SHD), liver depression and qi stagnation syndrome (肝鬱氣滯證 gān yù qì zhì zhèng; LDQ), dual spleen-kidney deficiency syndrome (脾腎兩虛證 pí shèn liǎng xū zhèng; SKD), yin deficiency with internal heat syndrome (陰虛內熱證 yīn xū nèi rè zhèng; YDI) and a control group. For physical conditions, SDD group had significantly higher means in weight and BMI compared with the control group. The insulin and leptin levels in SHD group were significantly higher than those in the control group. The LDQ group showed marked decrease in mental condition scores compared with the control group. This study found that obese women in the SDD group were fatter than those in the control group. SHD group might have greater influence on the regulation of obesity-related hormone peptides. The LDQ group had poor QOL than the control group. Analysis of TCM syndrome groups among obese women merits further investigation
