The Lost Life of Ira Daniel Aldridge (Part 1)

The sons of famous men sometimes fail to succeed in life, particularly if they suffer parental neglect in their childhood and youth. Ira Daniel Aldridge is a case in point-a promising lad who in his formative years lacked sustained contact with his father, a celebrated touring black actor whose peripatetic career in the British Isles and later on the European continent kept him away from home for long periods. When the boy rebelled as a teenager, his father sent him abroad, forcing him to make his own way in the world. Ira Daniel settled in Australia, married, and had children, but he found it difficult to support a family. Eventually, he turned to crime and wound up spending many years in prison. The son of an absent father, he too became an absent father to his own sons, who also suffered as a consequence

Ira Daniel’s story is not just a case study of a failed father-son relationship. It also presents us with an example of the hardships faced by migrants who move from one society to another in which they must struggle to fit in and survive. This is especially difficult for migrants who look different from most of those in the community they are entering, so this is a tale about strained race relations too. And it takes place in a penal colony where punishments were severe, even for those who committed petty offences. Ira Daniel tried at first to make an honest living, but finally, in desperation, he broke the law and ended up incarcerated in brutal conditions. He was a victim of his environment but also of his own inability to cope with the pressures of settling in a foreign land. Displacement drove him to fail

Empirical multi-wavelength prediction method for very high energy gamma-ray emitting BL Lacs

Aim: We have collected the most complete multi-wavelength (6.06.0×1018cm6.0 - 6.0 \times 10^{-18} cm) dataset of very high energy (VHE) γ\gamma-ray emitting (TeV) BL Lacs, which are the most numerous extragalactic VHE sources. Using significant correlations between different bands, we aim to identify the best TeV BL Lac candidates that can be discovered by the current and next generation of imaging air Cherenkov telescopes. Methods: We formed five datasets from lower energy data, i.e. radio, mid-infrared, optical, X-rays, and GeV γ\gamma-ray, and five VHE γ\gamma-ray datasets to perform a correlation study between different bands and to construct the prediction method. The low energy datasets were averaged for individual sources, while the VHE γ\gamma-ray data were divided into subsets according to the flux state of the source. We then looked for significant correlations and determined their best-fit parameters. Using the best-fit parameters we predicted the level of VHE γ\gamma-ray flux for a sample of 182 BL Lacs, which have not been detected at TeV energies. We identified the most promising TeV BL Lac candidates based on the predicted VHE γ\gamma-ray flux for each source. Results: We found 14 significant correlations between radio, mid-infrared, optical, γ\gamma-ray, and VHE γ\gamma-ray bands. The correlation between optical and VHE γ\gamma-ray luminosity is established for the first time. We attribute this to the more complete sample and more accurate handling of host galaxy flux in our work. We found nine BL Lac candidates whose predicted VHE γ\gamma-ray flux is high enough for detection in less than 25 hours with current imaging air Cherenkov telescopes.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, 4 Table

Bride to be : en kollektion svarta brudklänningar

My Bachelor’s Thesis Bride to be is a mini-collection consisting of four black wedding dresses. I have used recycled materials as a base in my planning and sewed one dress from recycled leather from old leather-jackets and left-over velvet. I have chosen to work with the colour black to give the dresses the longest lifetime possible. Black can be used in several different occasions and can also be worn after the wedding. The dress consists of two parts, which also makes it easier to combine with other clothes in the future. With this collection, I want to demonstrate that you can show personality in bridal gowns by different materials and shapes, but also that it is possible to make something beautiful and new from old materials. I have used market research, key words and product planning as my design methods. I have also researched in the meaning and symbolic of colours in the history of bridal gowns. The finished dress is a good example of a modern and ecological bridal gown and I wish that the bridal business would be more open to the using of recycled material in the future

Future 5G-based mobile networks will be largely defined by virtualized network functions (VNF). The related computing is being moved to cloud where a set of servers is provided to run all the software components of the VNFs. Such software component can be run on any server in the mobile network cloud infrastructure. The servers conventionally communicate via TCP/IP -network. To realize planned low-latency use cases in 5G, some servers are placed to data centers near the end users (edge clouds). Many of these use cases involve data accesses from one VNF to another, or to other network elements. The accesses are desired to take as little time as possible to stay within the stringent latency requirements of the new use cases. As a possible approach for reaching this, a novel memory-centric platform was studied. The main ideas of the memory-centric platform are to collapse the hierarchy between volatile and persistent memory by utilizing non-volatile memory (NVM) and use memory-semantic communication between computer components. In this work, a surrogate memory-centric platform was set up as a storage for VNFs and the latency of data accesses from VNF application was measured in different experiments. Measurements against a current platform showed that memory-centric platform was significantly faster to access than the current, TCP/IP using platform. Measurements for accessing RAM with different memory bandwidths within the memory-centric platform showed that the order of latency was roughly independent of the available memory bandwidth. These results mean that memory-centric platform is a promising alternative to be used as a storage system for edge clouds. However, more research is needed to study how other service qualities, such as low latency variation, are fulfilled in memory-centric platform in a VNF environment.Tulevaisuuden 5G:hen perustuvissa mobiiliverkoissa verkkolaitteisto on pääosin virtualisoitu. Palvelimet on tavallisesti yhdistetty TCP/IP-verkolla. Jotta suunnitellut alhaisen viiveen käyttötapaukset voisivat toteutua 5G-verkoissa, pilvipalvelimia on sijoitettu niin kutsuttuihin reunadatakeskuksiin lähelle loppukäyttäjiä. Monet näistä käyttötapauksista sisältävät tietopääsyjä virtuaaliverkkolaitteesta toisiin tai muihin verkkoelementteihin. Tietopääsyviiveen halutaan olevan mahdollisimman pieni, jotta käyttötapausten tiukoissa viiverajoissa pysytään. Mahdollisena lähestymistapana tietopääsyviiveen minimoimiseen tutkittiin muistikeskeistä laitteistoalustaa. Tämän laitteistoalustan pääperiaatteita on korvata nykyiset lyhytkestoiset ja pysyvät muistit haihtumattomalla muistilla sekä kommunikoida muistisemanttisilla viesteillä tietokonekomponenttien kesken. Tässä työssä muistikeskeisyyttä hyödyntävää sijaislaitteistoa käytettiin VNF-datan varastona ja ohjelmistokomponenttien tietopääsyviivettä sinne mitattiin erilaisilla kokeilla. Kokeet osoittivat nykyisen, TCP/IP-pohjaisen alustan huomattavasti muistikeskeistä alustaa hitaammaksi. Toiseksi, kokeet osoittivat tietopääsyviiveiden olevan saman suuruisia muistikeskeisen alustan sisällä, riippumatta saatavilla olevasta muistikaistasta. Tulokset merkitsevät, että muistikeskeinen alusta on lupaava vaihtoehto reunadatakeskuksen tietovarastojärjestelmäksi. Lisää tutkimusta alustasta kuitenkin tarvitaan, jotta muiden palvelun laatukriteerien, kuten matalan viivevaihtelun, toteutumisesta saadaan tietoa

Awkward Connections: Stand-Up Comedy as Affective Arrangement

This chapter explores stand-up as an affective arrangement, i.e., as goal-driven phatic labor that rests on forging and manipulating affective relations – connection for short – between performer and audience. Drawing on linguistic/semiotic anthropological work on phaticity as well as feminist work on affect, it attends to the manner in which this affective and connective dynamic is discursively formulated amongst practitioners and naturalized into an array of tropes and metaphors that construe stand-up as a self-regulating autopoetic organism and atmospheric field of energies, pressures, and intensities. Moreover, the chapter unveils the prospective communicative and connective gap of awkwardness as something endemic to the social and political dynamic of stand-up.This chapter explores stand-up as an affective arrangement, i.e., as goal-driven phatic labor that rests on forging and manipulating affective relations – connection for short – between performer and audience.
