The behavior of real exchange rates: the case of Japan

    Get PDF
The study examines the convergence rate of mean reversion by contrasting the estimated half-life of real exchange rate (RER). We employ an extensive monthly consumer price index (CPI)-based product price’s panel for Japan (the U.S. as the num´eraire). We find that the disaggregated RERs are persistent due to the cross-sectional dependence problems. By controlling common correlated effects, the estimated half-life for all goods may fall to as low as 2.54 years, below the consensus view of 3 to 5 years summarized by Rogoff (1996). After correcting the small-sample bias, the estimated half-life of deviations from purchasing power parity (PPP) increase by 1.03 year. Our findings also support that the half-life of mean reversion of RER is about 3.55 years for traded goods, about 0.11 year lower than non-traded goods. We also show that traded goods and non-traded goods perform distinct distributions of persistence

As Low Birth Weight Babies Grow, Can 'Good' Parents Buffer this Adverse Factor? A Research Note.

This research note combines two national Taiwanese datasets to investigate the relationship between low birth weight (LBW) babies, their family background and their future academic outcomes. We find that LBW is negatively correlated with the probability of such children attending university at the age of 18; however, when both parents are college or senior high school graduates, such negative effects may be partially offset. We also show that discrimination against daughters does occur, but only in those cases where the daughters were LBW babies. Moreover, high parental education (HPE) can only buffer the LBW shock among moderately-LBW children (as compared to very-LBW children) and full term-LBW children (as compared to preterm-LBW children).

Economic development and intergenerational earnings mobility: Evidence from Taiwan

    No full text
How economic development affects intergenerational earnings elasticity is not well-documented. In this paper, we estimate intergenerational earnings elasticities between fathers and sons in two periods. In the current period, 2005–2010, Taiwan is already a developed economy with slower economic growth. We apply the two-sample approach developed by Björklund and Jäntti (1997) and find that intergenerational earnings elasticity is around 0.4–0.5 in this period. In the earlier period, 1990–1994, Taiwan was still a developing economy with fast economic growth. We mimic the Björklund-Jäntti two-sample approach and use average earnings by occupation as a proxy for fathers’ earnings. To quantify potential bias, we apply the same method to the 2005–2010 data. Our proxy method yields similar estimates in both the early 1990s and late 2000s. These results suggest stable intergenerational transmission of economic status in Taiwan, despite its rapid economic development

RBC volume deficiency in patients with excessive orthostatic decrease in cerebral blood flow velocity

AbstractBackgroundOrthostatic intolerance (OI) is common but heterogeneous. There is a subgroup of OI patients who have excessive decrease in cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) of bilateral middle cerebral arteries (MCAs) during head-up tilt without systemic blood pressure change. This study evaluated the role of blood volume reduction in such patients.MethodsPatients with idiopathic OI who had excessive orthostatic decrease (>20% of the supine level) in mean CBFV of bilateral MCAs and who also received blood volume determination were collected. The chromium (51Cr) dilution method was used for red blood cell (RBC) volume determination in these patients. The blood volume was expressed as a percentage of the expected volume. These patients were further divided into two groups, those with postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS group) and those without (non-POTS group). The data of RBC volume were compared between the two groups. Besides, we used multivariate linear regression to evaluate the factors that predict RBC volume.ResultsTwenty-five patients (13 females, median age = 28 years) were enrolled in this study. Nine of these patients had POTS (5 females, median age = 26 years) and 16 did not (8 females, median age = 29.5 years). Compared with the expected volume, the RBC volume was significantly reduced in all patients (median = 82% of the expected volume). Moreover, the RBC volume was significantly lower in the POTS group than that in the non-POTS group (78% vs. 85% of the expected volume, p = 0.013). The orthostatic decrease of MCA flow velocity was 28.3% in the POTS group and 32.5% in the non-POTS group (p = 0.140). The orthostatic pulsatility index increment was 15.4% in the POTS group and 20.5% in the non-POTS group (p = 0.438). Moreover, basic demography and hemoglobin levels were not different between the two groups. After multivariate linear regression (dependent variables including age, sex, body surface, and groups), only the presence of POTS significantly predicted the RBC volume (p = 0.006).ConclusionThe results of our study indicated that low RBC volume may play an important role in the pathophysiology of OI in this group of patients. Moreover, its role seems even more relevant in patients with POTS than in those without. Further studies for mechanistic evaluation are needed in the future

Molecular Detection of Circulating Tumor Cells With Multiple mRNA Markers by Genechip for Colorectal Cancer Early Diagnosis and Prognosis Prediction

    Get PDF
Early detection is the hallmark of successful cancer treatment. Evidence is accumulating that primary cancers begin shedding neoplastic cells into the circulation at an early stage. To date, many different methodologies have been used for the detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) with variable sensitivity and specificity. In many studies, including patients with different clinical stages of colorectal cancer, the detection of CTCs in early and/or metastatic colorectal cancer has been shown to correlate with unfavorable clinical outcome. However, a high-sensitivity and high-throughput method for the detection of CTCs is currently lacking. Here, we introduce a high-sensitivity genechip analysis method from a colorimetric membrane array to a weighted enzymatic chip array in order to detect the CTC-related multiple mRNA markers derived from colorectal cancer patients as a convenient and practical tool for early diagnosis and prognosis prediction

A Comparative Study for 2D and 3D Computer-aided Diagnosis Methods for Solitary Pulmonary Nodules

    Get PDF
Many computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) methods, including 2D and 3D approaches, have been proposed for solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs). However, the detection and diagnosis of SPNs remain challenging in many clinical circumstances. One goal of this work is to investigate the relative diagnostic accuracy of 2D and 3D methods. An additional goal is to develop a two-stage approach that combines the simplicity of 2D and the accuracy of 3D methods. The experimental results show statistically significant differences between the diagnostic accuracy of 2D and 3D methods. The results also show that with a very minor drop in diagnostic performance the two-stage approach can significantly reduce the number of nodules needed to be processed by the 3D method, streamlining the computational demand

Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α regulates matrix metalloproteinase-1 activity in human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells

    Get PDF
AbstractWe examined the mRNA levels of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (bmMSCs) of eight osteoarthritis patients. BmMSC-1, expressing higher HIF-1α mRNA and protein than bmMSC-5, elicited higher matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP1) activity and stronger invasive capacity. In vitro invasion assays and quantitative PCR analyses showed that targeted inhibition of HIF-1α in bmMSC-1 decreased its invasion and expressions of MMP1 and MMP3, whereas overexpression of HIF-1α in bmMSC-5 increased its invasion and expressions of MMP1 and MMP3. Therefore, HIF-1α can regulate MMP1 and MMP3 expressions in human bmMSCs, which might suggest a pathophysiological role of bmMSC expressing high HIF-1α in bone diseases
