Characterization of the thermoelastic martensitic transformation in a NiTi alloy driven by temperature variation and external stress
In order to test the concept of the physics of dissipation during first-order phase transitions in solids, we measured the internal friction (Q-1) and the relative shear modulus (μ) during a thermoelastic martensitic transformation in a NiTi alloy. We adopted two approaches: temperature variation and application of external stress. This investigation of internal friction was carried out with various vibration frequencies ω, temperature variation rates Ṫ, and strain variation rates ɛ̇. The index l (coupling factor between phase interface and oscillating stress) and index n (rate exponent for the effective phase transformation driving force) have been calculated from the experimental data for each case and the values of l and n are about the same in the two (doped) NiTi samples, irrespective of whether the phase transition is driven by a temperature variation or stress induced process. We compare the values of n and l for the NiTi samples with that of the other samples (VO2 ceramics and FeMn alloys), reinforcing the previous physical interpretations of these indices. We believe the indices n and l are indeed fingerprints of first-order phase transitions in solids.published_or_final_versio
Analysis of dissipation of a burst-type martensite transformation in a Fe-Mn alloy by internal friction measurements
Recently, we have proposed a theory to analyze the first-order phase transition (FOPT) in solids. In order to test the concept of the physics of dissipation during FOPT in solids, it is necessary to test the theory with different FOPT system. We study here a burst-type martensite transformation in a Fe-18.8% Mn alloy sample for this purpose. We investigate the characteristics of γ(fcc)⇌ɛ(hcp) transformation in this alloy and measure the dependence of internal friction (IF) during γ/ɛ transformation in varying rate of temperature Ṫ and vibration frequency ω. For free oscillations, the IF was defined to be Qδ-1=δ/π where δ is the logarithmic decrement. For general (forced) oscillations, IF is usually defined to be Qw-1=(1/2π)(ΔW/W), where ΔW is the dissipation over one cycle, while W is the maximum stored energy. During our analysis, the relation between Qδ-1 and Qw-1 is deduced. The parameter l (coupling factor between phase interface and oscillating stress) takes a small value (0.015–0.035) during PT, but takes a large value (0.86) during static state. The parameter n (exponent of rate for effective PT driving force) takes a large value 0.33 during heating and 0.47 during cooling. The physical meaning of n and l is discussed. The methodology introduced here appears to be an effective way of studying FOPT in solids. © 1996 The American Physical Society.published_or_final_versio

SSN: Shape Signature Networks for Multi-class Object Detection from Point Clouds
Multi-class 3D object detection aims to localize and classify objects of
multiple categories from point clouds. Due to the nature of point clouds, i.e.
unstructured, sparse and noisy, some features benefit-ting multi-class
discrimination are underexploited, such as shape information. In this paper, we
propose a novel 3D shape signature to explore the shape information from point
clouds. By incorporating operations of symmetry, convex hull and chebyshev
fitting, the proposed shape sig-nature is not only compact and effective but
also robust to the noise, which serves as a soft constraint to improve the
feature capability of multi-class discrimination. Based on the proposed shape
signature, we develop the shape signature networks (SSN) for 3D object
detection, which consist of pyramid feature encoding part, shape-aware grouping
heads and explicit shape encoding objective. Experiments show that the proposed
method performs remarkably better than existing methods on two large-scale
datasets. Furthermore, our shape signature can act as a plug-and-play component
and ablation study shows its effectiveness and good scalabilityComment: Code is available at https://github.com/xinge008/SS
The Changes in Maternal Mortality in 1000 Counties in Mid-Western China by a Government-Initiated Intervention
BACKGROUND: Since 2000, the Chinese government has implemented an intervention program to reduce maternal mortality and eliminate neonatal tetanus in accordance with the Millennium Development Goals 5. To assess the effectiveness of this intervention program, we analyzed the level, trend and reasons defining the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in the 1,000 priority counties before and after implementation of the intervention between 1999 and 2007. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The data was obtained from the National Maternal and Child Health Routine Reporting System. The intervention included providing basic and emergency obstetric equipment and supplies to local medical hospitals, and also included providing professional training to local obstetric doctors, development of obstetric emergency centers and "green channel" express referral networks, reducing or waiving the cost of hospital delivery, and conducting community health education. Based on the initiation time of the intervention and the level of poverty, 1,000 counties, containing a total population of 300 million, were categorized into three groups. MMR significantly decreased by about 50%, with an average reduction rate of 9.24%, 16.06%, and 18.61% per year in the three county groups, respectively. The hospital delivery rate significantly increased. Obstetric hemorrhage was the leading cause of maternal deaths and significantly declined, with an average decrease in the MMR of 11.25%, 18.03%, and 24.90% per year, respectively. The magnitude of the MMR, the average reduction rate of the MMR, and the occurrence of the leading causes of death were closely associated with the percentage of poverty. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The intervention program implemented by the Chinese government has significantly reduced the MMR in mid-western China, suggesting that well-targeted interventions could be an efficient strategy to reducing MMR in resource-poor areas. Reduction of the MMR not only depends on conducting proven interventions, but also relies on economic development in rural areas with a high burden of maternal death
Determining the role of external beam radiotherapy in unresectable intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: a retrospective analysis of 84 patients

Abstract

Background

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is the second most common type of primary liver cancer. Only few studies have focused on palliative radiotherapy used for patients who weren't suitable for resection by surgery. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) for patients with unresectable ICC.

Methods

We identified 84 patients with ICC from December 1998 through December 2008 for retrospective analysis. Thirty-five of 84 patients received EBRT therapy five times a week (median dose, 50 Gy; dose range, 30-60 Gy, in fractions of 1.8-2.0 Gy daily; EBRT group); the remaining 49 patients comprised the non-EBRT group. Tumor response, jaundice relief, and survival rates were compared by Kaplan-Meier analysis. Patient records were reviewed and compared using Cox proportional hazard analysis to determine factors that affect survival time in ICC.

Results

After EBRT, complete response (CR) and partial response (PR) of primary tumors were observed in 8.6% and 28.5% of patients, respectively, and CR and PR of lymph node metastases were observed in 20% and 40% of patients. In 19 patients with jaundice, complete and partial relief was observed in 36.8% and 31.6% of patients, respectively. Median survival times were 5.1 months for the non-EBRT group and 9.5 months for the EBRT group (<it>P </it>= 0.003). One-and two-year survival rates for EBRT versus non-EBRT group were 38.5% versus 16.4%, and 9.6% versus 4.9%, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that clinical symptoms, larger tumor size, no EBRT, multiple nodules and synchronous lymph node metastases were associated with poorer prognosis.

Conclusions

EBRT as palliative care appears to improve prognosis and relieve the symptom of jaundice in patients with unresectable ICC.</p
Front-like entire solutions for monostable reaction-diffusion systems
This paper is concerned with front-like entire solutions for monostable
reactiondiffusion systems with cooperative and non-cooperative nonlinearities.
In the cooperative case, the existence and asymptotic behavior of spatially
independent solutions (SIS) are first proved. Combining a SIS and traveling
fronts with different wave speeds and directions, the existence and various
qualitative properties of entire solutions are then established using
comparison principle. In the non-cooperative case, we introduce two auxiliary
cooperative systems and establish some comparison arguments for the three
systems. The existence of entire solutions is then proved via the traveling
fronts and SIS of the auxiliary systems. Our results are applied to some
biological and epidemiological models. To the best of our knowledge, it is the
first work to study the entire solutions of non-cooperative reaction-diffusion
systems
Electrical properties of B-doped polycrystalline silicon thin films prepared by rapid thermal chemical vapour deposition
In this paper, about 30 mu m thick B-doped polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) thin films were deposited on quartz substrates, n-type single crystalline silicon wafers and p(++)-type poly-Si ribbons by a rapid thermal chemical vapour deposition system in a temperature range from 1000 to 1150 degrees C. Activation energy measurement and room temperature/temperature dependent Hall effect measurement were performed on the poly-Si thin films prepared on the former two kinds of substrates, respectively. It seems that the electrical properties of as-prepared poly-Si thin films could be qualitatively explained by Seto's grain boundary (GB) trapping theory although there is a big difference between our samples and Seto's in gain size and film thickness etc. The experimental results reconfirm that GB itself is a kind of most effective recombination center with trapping level near the midgap and trapping state density in the order of 1012 cm(-2) magnitude. Electron beam induced current measurements on the poly-Si thin films prepared on the poly-Si ribbons also show that severe recombination occurs at the positions of GBs. Two-photon dual imaging platform for in vivo monitoring cellular oxidative stress in liver injury
Oxidative stress reflects an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidants, which has been reported as an early unifying event in the development and progression of various diseases and as a direct and mechanistic indicator of treatment response. However, highly reactive and short-lived nature of ROS and antioxidant limited conventional detection agents, which are influenced by many interfering factors. Here, we present a two-photon sensing platform for in vivo dual imaging of oxidative stress at the single cell-level resolution. This sensing platform consists of three probes, which combine the turn-on fluorescent transition-metal complex with different specific responsive groups for glutathione (GSH), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hypochlorous acid (HOCl). By combining fluorescence intensity imaging and fluorescence lifetime imaging, these probes totally remove any possibility of crosstalk from in vivo environmental or instrumental factors, and enable accurate localization and measurement of the changes in ROS and GSH within the liver. This precedes changes in conventional biochemical and histological assessments in two distinct experimental murine models of liver injury. The ability to monitor real-time cellular oxidative stress with dual-modality imaging has significant implications for high-accurate, spatially configured and quantitative assessment of metabolic status and drug response
