    A logistic regression model for microalbuminuria prediction in overweight male population

    Background: Obesity promotes progression to microalbuminuria and increases the risk of chronic kidney disease. Current protocols of screening microalbuminuria are not recommended for the overweight or obese.

Design and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted. The relationship between metabolic risk factors and microalbuminuria was investigated. A regression model based on metabolic risk factors was developed and evaluated for predicting microalbuminuria in the overweight or obese.

Results: The prevalence of MA reached up to 17.6% in Chinese overweight men. Obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia and hyperuricemia were the important risk factors for microalbuminuria in the overweight. The area under ROC curves of the regression model based on the risk factors was 0.82 in predicting microalbuminuria, meanwhile, a decision threshold of 0.2 was found for predicting microalbuminuria with a sensitivity of 67.4% and specificity of 79.0%, and a global predictive value of 75.7%. A decision threshold of 0.1 was chosen for screening microalbuminuria with a sensitivity of 90.0% and specificity of 56.5%, and a global predictive value of 61.7%.

Conclusions: The prediction model was an effective tool for screening microalbuminuria by using routine data among overweight populations

    Associations between Aquaglyceroporin Gene Polymorphisms and Risk of Stroke among Patients with Hypertension

    Background: Dysregulations ofAQP7andAQP9were found to be related to lipid metabolism abnormality, which had been provento be one of the mechanisms of stroke. However, limited epidemiological studies explore the associations betweenAQP7andAQP9and the risk of stroke among patients with hypertension in China. Aims: We aimed to investigate the associations between genetic variants in AQP7andAQP9and the risk of stroke among patients with hypertension, as well as to explore gene-gene andgene-environment interactions. Methods: Baseline blood samples were drawn from 211 cases with stroke and 633 matched controls. Genomic DNA was extracted by a commercially available kit. Genotyping of 5 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in AQP7 (rs2989924, rs3758269, and rs2542743) and AQP9 (rs57139208, rs16939881) was performed by the polymerase chain reaction assay with TaqMan probes. Results: Participants with the rs2989924 GG genotype were found to be with a 1.74-fold increased risk of stroke compared to those with the AA+AG genotype, and this association remained significant after adjustment for potential confounders (odds ratio (OR): 1.74, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.23-2.46). The SNP rs3758269 CC+TT genotype was found to be with a 33% decreased risk of stroke after multivariate adjustment (OR: 0.67, 95% CI: 0.45-0.99) compared to the rs3758269 CC genotype. The significantly increased risk of stroke was prominent among males, patients aged 60 or above, and participants who were overweight and with a harbored genetic variant in SNP rs2989924. After adjusting potential confounders, the SNP rs3758269 CT+TT genotype was found to be significantly associated with a decreased risk of stroke compared to the CC genotype among participants younger than 60 years old or overweight. No statistically significant associations were observed between genotypes of rs2542743, rs57139208, or rs16939881 with the risk of stroke. Neither interactions nor linkage disequilibrium had been observed in this study. Conclusions: This study suggests that SNPs rs2989924 and rs3758269 are associated with the risk of stroke among patients with hypertension, while there were no statistically significant associations between rs2542743, rs57139208, and rs16939881 and the risk of stroke being observed

    An all fiber source of frequency entangled photon pairs

    We present an all fiber source of frequency entangled photon pairs by using four wave mixing in a Sagnac fiber loop. Special care is taken to suppress the impurity of the frequency entanglement by cooling the fiber and by matching the polarization modes of the photon pairs counter-propagating in the fiber loop. Coincidence detection of signal and idler photons, which are created in pair and in different spatial modes of the fiber loop, shows the quantum interference in the form of spatial beating, while the single counts of the individual signal (idler) photons keep constant. When the production rate of photon pairs is about 0.013 pairs/pulse, the envelope of the quantum interference reveals a visibility of (95±2)(95\pm 2)%, which is close to the calculated theoretical limit 97.4%Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, to appear in Phys.     Investigating the time-dependent behaviour of Boom clay under thermo-mechanical loading

    Among the various laboratory studies to investigate the Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical (THM) behaviour of Boom clay, relatively few were devoted to the time dependent behaviour, limiting any relevant analysis of the long-term behaviour of the disposal facility. The present work aims at investigating the time-dependent behaviour of Boom clay under both thermal and mechanical loading. High-pressure triaxial tests at controlled temperatures were carried out for this purpose. The tests started with constant-rate thermal and/or mechanical consolidation and ended with isobar heating and/or isothermal compression at a constant stress rate or by step loading. Significant effects of temperature as well as of compression and heating rates were observed on the volume change behaviour. After being loaded to a stress lower than the pre-consolidation pressure (5 MPa) at a low temperature of 25\degree C and at a rate lower than 0.2 kPa/min, the sample volume changes seemed to be quite small, suggesting a full dissipation of pore water pressure. By contrast, after being subjected to high loading and heating rates (including step loading or step heating), the volume changes appeared to be significant, particularly in the case of stresses much higher than the pre-consolidation pressure. Due to low permeability, full consolidation of Boom clay required a long period of time and it was difficult to distinguish consolidation and creep from the total volume change with time
