Determination of confusion noise for far-infrared measurements
We present a detailed assessment of the far-infrared confusion noise imposed
on measurements with the ISOPHOT far-infrared detectors and cameras aboard the
ISO satellite. We provide confusion noise values for all measurement
configurations and observing modes of ISOPHOT in the 90<=lambda<=200um
wavelength range. Based on these results we also give estimates for cirrus
confusion noise levels at the resolution limits of current and future
instruments of infrared space telescopes: Spitzer/MIPS, ASTRO-F/FIS and

Habitat Modeling of Alien Plant Species at Varying Levels of Occupancy
Distribution models of invasive plants are very useful tools for conservation
management. There are challenges in modeling expanding populations, especially in a
dynamic environment, and when data are limited. In this paper, predictive habitat models
were assessed for three invasive plant species, at differing levels of occurrence, using two
different habitat modeling techniques: logistic regression and maximum entropy. The
influence of disturbance, spatial and temporal heterogeneity, and other landscape
characteristics is assessed by creating regional level models based on occurrence records from the USDA Forest Service’s Forest Inventory and Analysis database. Logistic
regression and maximum entropy models were assessed independently. Ensemble models
were developed to combine the predictions of the two analysis approaches to obtain a more
robust prediction estimate. All species had strong models with Area Under the receiver
operator Curve (AUC) of >0.75. The species with the highest occurrence, Ligustrum spp.,
had the greatest agreement between the models (93%). Lolium arundinaceum had the most disagreement between models at 33% and the lowest AUC values. Overall, the strength of
integrative modeling in assessing and understanding habitat modeling was demonstrated
Status of the isophot detector development
ISOPHOT is one of the four focal plane experiments of the European Space Agency's Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). Scheduled for a 1993 launch, it will operate extrinsic silicon and germanium photoconductors at low temperature and low background during the longer than 18 month mission. These detectors cover the wavelength range from 2.5 to 200 microns and are used as single elements and in arrays. A cryogenic preamplifier was developed to read out a total number of 223 detector pixels
The European Large Area ISO Survey - ISOPHOT results using the MPIA-pipeline
The European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) will provide Infrared observations
of 4 regions in the sky with ISO. Around 2000 Infrared sources have been
detected at 7 and 15 microns (with ISOCAM), 90 and 175 microns (with ISOPHOT))
over 13 square degrees of the sky. We present the source extraction pipeline of
the 90 microns ISOPHOT observations, describe and discuss the results obtained

High accuracy measure of atomic polarizability in an optical lattice clock
Despite being a canonical example of quantum mechanical perturbation theory,
as well as one of the earliest observed spectroscopic shifts, the Stark effect
contributes the largest source of uncertainty in a modern optical atomic clock
through blackbody radiation. By employing an ultracold, trapped atomic ensemble
and high stability optical clock, we characterize the quadratic Stark effect
with unprecedented precision. We report the ytterbium optical clock's
sensitivity to electric fields (such as blackbody radiation) as the
differential static polarizability of the ground and excited clock levels:
36.2612(7) kHz (kV/cm)^{-2}. The clock's fractional uncertainty due to room
temperature blackbody radiation is reduced an order of magnitude to 3 \times
