Theoretical Progression of Work and Life Relationship: A Historical Perspective

    Get PDF
In this study we will discuss the historical changes in the work and life relationship which resulted in development of new theories. After an introduction to work-life relationships, different theories of work and life are presented in the second section of this paper. These theories are categories intro three generations based on their characteristics in the historical evolution of work-life studies. In the third section measures of work and life spillovers are described. In section four, critiques of the current methodologies which is being used in the work and life studies are presented. Discussion section which is presented in following section includes some arguments regarding the ways to select the most appropriate theories for work-life studies. Also in this section some recommendations are presented for enhancing the commonly used methodologies of the research on work and life relationships. Finally, in the last section, some recommendations for future studies are presented

Ten-tier and multi-scale supplychain network analysis of medical equipment: Random failure and intelligent attack analysis

Motivated by the COVID-19 pandemic, this paper explores the supply chain viability of medical equipment, an industry whose supply chain was put under a crucial test during the pandemic. This paper includes an empirical network-level analysis of supplier reachability under Random Failure Experiment (RFE) and Intelligent Attack Experiment (IAE). Specifically, this study investigates the effect of RFA and IAE across multiple tiers and scales. The global supply chain data was mined and analyzed from about 45,000 firms with about 115,000 intertwined relationships spanning across 10 tiers of the backward supply chain of medical equipment. This complex supply chain network was analyzed at four scales, namely: firm, country-industry, industry, and country. A notable contribution of this study is the application of a supply chain tier optimization tool to identify the lowest tier of the supply chain that can provide adequate resolution for the study of the supply chain pattern. We also developed data-driven-tools to identify the thresholds for breakdown and fragmentation of the medical equipment supply chain when faced with random failures or different intelligent attack scenarios. The novel network analysis tools utilized in the study can be applied to the study of supply chain reachability and viability in other industries.Comment: 47 page

Operational excellence through business process orientation: An intra- and inter-organizational analysis

    No full text
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of business process orientation (BPO) at intra- and inter-organizational levels in various aspects of organizational performance. Design/methodology/approach - A comprehensive research model is developed based on the review of literature. The research model is later examined and modified based on the analysis of a sample of 3,200 for-profit organizations. Factor analysis and structural equation modeling techniques are used to investigate the research questions presented in the study. Findings - The findings of this study suggest that while higher levels of BPO at intra-organizational level provide direct financial and operational benefits for the firms in our sample. Higher levels of BPO at inter-organizational level provide direct customer satisfaction benefits as well as indirect financial and operational benefits. Research limitations/implications - Lack of sufficient previous studies and theories in this area is one of the main limitations of the study. Practical implications - One of the important managerial implications of the present study is that organizations can learn about the types of benefits that they may expect to gain through a higher level of BPO at each of the two levels of analysis in this study: intra- and inter-organizational. Originality/value - The measurement models and the comprehensive structural model are the main original contributions of this study. As far as can be determined, this is the first study that measures BPO at intra- and inter-organizational levels with respect to suppliers and customers, in addition to investigating the role of BPO on various aspects of organizational performance indicators through a large scale empirical study

Electronic collaboration ontology: The case of readiness analysis of electronic marketplace adoption

    No full text
This paper introduces the ontology of electronic collaboration (e-collaboration) and applies it for modeling the readiness analysis of e-collaboration through the electronic marketplace (EM). Our search of the literature shows that the publication of papers in the areas of e-collaboration and EM has reached to the third phase of S-shape growth, which indicates that these areas have arrived at a certain level of maturity. However, while most of the e-collaboration studies focus on the application of collaboration technologies, less attention has been paid to the development of frameworks and the models that can describe the concept of the collaboration. Based on the notion of e-collaboration at the organization level, this paper introduces the ontology of e-collaboration. The proposed e-collaboration ontology is further applied to the case of readiness analysis for EM-based collaboration. Following the proposed ontology, the readiness model displays key measures of readiness at the strategy, process, and technology levels. At each level, the measures are segmented into internal and external contexts

Developments in theories of supply chain management: The case of B2B electronic marketplace adoption

    No full text
There exists a gap in the literature available in the area of supply chain management (SCM) studies, on providing theoretical support for explaining the existence and the domain of SCM. This study, explores eight SCM theories and views for SCM studies: resource-based view, transaction cost theory, knowledge-based view, strategic choice theory, agency theory, institutional theory, systems theory, and network perspective. The main objective of this paper is to provide a framework for the developments of SC theories, and elaborate the possible ways that these theories can be applied to the case of Business to Business (B2B) e-Marketplace (EM) enabled supply chain. The case of EM is selected as one of the most recent collaborative tools in SCM studies and describes how the current SCM theories can be employed

E-Marketplace emergence: Evolution, developments and classification

    No full text
The present paper provides a comprehensive multi-dimensional classification of Electronic Marketplaces (EM). The paper opens the discussion by investigating the early utilizations of the concept of EM and makes some original references to the early uses of the technology in marketplaces. After an in-depth analysis of the concept of EM, the developments and application of the EM as an intra- and inter-organizational electronic platform is explicitly described. Finally, a comprehensive classification of EMs is presented followed by a discussion of future trends in study and utilization of EMs. Copyrigh

From integration to social media: Understanding electronic marketplace

    No full text
EMs as trade tools have been the subject of several disruptive changes during the past few decades. The chapter discusses the importance of EM integration and market knowledge management as today's main concerns affecting the effectiveness and efficiency of EMs. After explaining the concerns regarding EM integration at intra- and inter-organizational levels, the chapter mentions the role of social media as an example of new technological tools that affect EMs. By highlighting the importance of understanding EMs this paper proposes a four level analytical tool for differentiating B2B EMs
