Not AvailableAn experiment was conducted during rabi 2005-06 to examine the genotypic differences in WUE traits and to identify lines with drought tolerance. Eleven germplasm lines were sown and stress was imposed by withholding irrigation from 45DAS and extended till 120 DAS. Plant height, leaf number and tertiary branch production was reduced significantly with stress. SCMR was significantly more in stress at 55 DAS. SLA did not differ significantly in control and stress. Strong negative correlation of SCMR with SLA is seen (>-0.90.) both in control and stress treatments. Genotype RG297 showed high SCMR, low SLA, and high TDM both in control and stress treatments. This genotype also showed higher seed yield and HI in stress with less percent reduction in seed yield compared to control and with low DSI values

Effect of growth regulators, emulsifiable oils and shading on branching and yield of sunflower.

Not AvailableOilseeds are energy rich crops and the nutrient requirement is very high. The nutrient reserves existing in most of our soils today are too low to ensure adequate supplies of nutrients. High yields necessary to provide adequate amounts of high quality food can be achieved only when the nutrients withdrawn from soil due to crop cultivation are added back to the soil. In crop production, optimum nutrient supply is usually achieved by the application of manures and fertilizers. Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is an important oilseed crop well adapted to dryland conditions because of its deep root system (Dordas and Sioulas 2008) and is grown on black soils during winter with receding soil moisture under input starved conditions as a result the crop suffers hidden hunger. Foliar symptoms are the first indicators to identify the nutrient deficiencies. Stage of the crop, position of the leaf on the plant and extent of metabolic disturbance will determine the deficiencies specific to individual nutrient element. Though not many reports are there on nutritional disorders in field conditions in safflower, their occurrence in future cannot be ruled out. Hence, an experiment was conducted to characterize deficiency symptoms of major nutrients, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), Potassium (K) and micronutrient Fe to serve as a guide for identification and correction. Not Availabl

Not AvailableAn experiment was conducted at IIOR to study sink strength and partitioning of assimilates to sink with nipping of different order spikes at initiation or at full expansion stage. Nipping of one spike order at any stage did not show significant reduction in castor seed yield and compensated from next order spikes. Not Availabl

Not AvailableA study was conducted during 2001-02 to evaluate 400 advanced selections of castor (Ricinus communis L.) in an augmented randomized block design with 3 checks replicated 5 times after every 45 rows. Among these, 32 lines were selected for high seed yield, yield components and field tolerance to Botrytis under natural incidence. Preliminary evaluation of these 32 promising varieties during 2002-03 both for seed yield and physiological parameters, like total dry matter, leaf area index resulted in identification of 2 promising varieties' DCS 105'and'DCS 106'which have been promoted to multi-location trials. Not Availabl

Not Available54 inbreds and 8 hybrids of sunflower were studied for variability in root traits by growing them in polybags (90 cm length and 40 cm diameter) of 120kg soil capacity @ 2 plants per bag for 65 days during rabi. FYM was mixed with soil in the ratio of 1: 5 (v/v). Plants were irrigated as and when required. Observations were recorded at the time of harvest. Wide genetic variability was observed for all the parameters studied. Hybrids recorded higher root weight, volume, length, total dry matter (TDM), leaf area, leaf number compared to inbreds. Root weight showed strong positive relationship with TDM (0.77) and leaf area (0.62) compared to root volume (0.74 & 0.61) and root length (0.62 & 0.55). Among the root traits, root weight and volume showed good correlation +0.89 compared to their relation with root length. Root traits did not show any relation with SCMR and SLA (specific leaf area). A selection index was computed using principal component analysis by taking into consideration root characters along with TDM and leaf area. Based on the index value, hybrids DRSH-1, NSFH-1001 and inbreds 106A, 335 A, AKSFI-42-I, DS-2, 298-R, CSFI-5075, 856-R, R-7, CMS-335A were found promising. Not Availabl

Not AvailableNine germplasm lines selected for root traits (volume, dry weight) along with checks were screened for drought tolerance in field by imposing drought stress from 30-90 DAS. Genotypes RG 373 and RG 1582 recorded >50g/pl. seed yield with <30% reduction in seed yield under drought stress along with low (<1.0) drought susceptibility index (DSI). These selected germplasm lines can be used in breeding for rainfed conditions. Not Availabl

Not AvailableA study was conducted to identify castor genotypes with high WUE, root traits and TDM. Sixty four genotypes including germplasm lines and advanced varietal/hybrid trial (AVT/AVHT) entries along with checks (48-1 and GCH-5) were sown during 2008-09 in two specially constructed root structures (32 in each structure) replicating twice with four plants per replication. Data on root (length, volume, dry weight), shoot (LAI, TDM, stem girth) and WUE traits (SPAD chlorophyll meter reading, specific leaf area, 13C, 18O) were recorded at 90 DAS. Among the material screened, ten genotypes were selected based on index using principal component analysis (PCA) as best genotypes for root and shoot growth and WUE traits. These genotypes include RG 1437, RG 1463, RG 1494, RG 1614, RG 1645, RG 1941, RG 2058, RG 2113, RG 2127 and RG 2139.Not Availabl

Not AvailableThree sunflower hybrid seeds of known age viz., 3, 2 and 1 month old seeds of DRSH-1, KBSH-44, CO-2 respectively were tested for salt tolerance by conducting germination studies in 200, 250, 300, 350 mM NaCl at monthly intervals. Results differed when seeds of same age were compared with seeds of mixed age. For valid comparison, the seeds should essentially be of same age.Not Availabl
