Autologous temporomandibular joint reconstruction independent of exogenous additives: a proof-of-concept study for guided self-generation

Joint defects are complex and difficult to reconstruct. By exploiting the body's own regenerative capacity, we aimed to individually generate anatomically precise neo-tissue constructs for autologous joint reconstruction without using any exogenous additives. In a goat model, CT scans of the mandibular condyle including articular surface and a large portion of the ascending ramus were processed using computer-aided design and manufacturing. A corresponding hydroxylapatite negative mold was printed in 3D and temporarily embedded into the transition zone of costal periosteum and perichondrium. A demineralized bone matrix scaffold implanted on the contralateral side served as control. Neo-tissue constructs obtained by guided self-generation exhibited accurate configuration, robust vascularization, biomechanical stability, and function. After autologous replacement surgery, the constructs showed stable results with similar anatomical, histological, and functional findings compared to native controls. Further studies are required to assess long-term outcome and possible extensions to other further applications. The absence of exogenous cells, growth factors, and scaffolds may facilitate clinical translation of this approach

Bioengineered human tissue regeneration and repair using endogenous stem cells

We describe a general approach to produce bone and cartilaginous structures utilizing the self-regenerative capacity of the intercostal rib space to treat a deformed metacarpophalangeal joint and microtia. Anatomically precise 3D molds were positioned on the perichondro-periosteal or perichondral flap of the intercostal rib without any other exogenous elements. We find anatomically precise metacarpal head and auricle constructs within the implanted molds after 6 months. The regenerated metacarpal head was used successfully to surgically repair the deformed metacarpophalangeal joint. Auricle reconstructive surgery in five unilateral microtia patients yielded good aesthetic and functional results. Long-term follow-up revealed the auricle constructs were safe and stable. Single-cell RNA sequencing analysis reveal early infiltration of a cell population consistent with mesenchymal stem cells, followed by IL-8-stimulated differentiation into chondrocytes. Our results demonstrate the repair and regeneration of tissues using only endogenous factors and a viable treatment strategy for bone and tissue structural defects.</p

Accurate Location in Dynamic Traffic Environment Using Semantic Information and Probabilistic Data Association

    No full text
High-accurate and real-time localization is the fundamental and challenging task for autonomous driving in a dynamic traffic environment. This paper presents a coordinated positioning strategy that is composed of semantic information and probabilistic data association, which improves the accuracy of SLAM in dynamic traffic settings. First, the improved semantic segmentation network, building on Fast-SCNN, uses the Res2net module instead of the Bottleneck in the global feature extraction to further explore the multi-scale granular features. It achieves the balance between segmentation accuracy and inference speed, leading to consistent performance gains on the coordinated localization task of this paper. Second, a novel scene descriptor combining geometric, semantic, and distributional information is proposed. These descriptors are made up of significant features and their surroundings, which may be unique to a traffic scene, and are used to improve data association quality. Finally, a probabilistic data association is created to find the best estimate using a maximum measurement expectation model. This approach assigns semantic labels to landmarks observed in the environment and is used to correct false negatives in data association. We have evaluated our system with ORB-SLAM2 and DynaSLAM, the most advanced algorithms, to demonstrate its advantages. On the KITTI dataset, the results reveal that our approach outperforms other methods in dynamic traffic situations, especially in highly dynamic scenes, with sub-meter average accuracy

Bentonite replacing part of cement concrete for resistance to chloride ion attack

    No full text
Bentonite is known as a kind of natural pozzolan that can improve the mechanical properties of cementitious materials and reduce the overall CO2 output of cement production. This study is designed to evaluate the feasibility of using bentonite as a substitute for cement in concrete and analyze the effect of bentonite on resisting chloride ion penetration. The concrete was replaced by equal-quality bentonite for 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% cement respectively, and the water-cement ratio, fine and coarse aggregate content remained constant. The results indicated that as the bentonite content increased, the compressive strength of the mixes increased first and then decreased. The sample containing 10% bentonite got a higher compressive strength than the other samples. The rapid chloride migration (RCM) tests showed that the samples containing bentonite had better resistance to chloride ion attack than samples without bentonite against chloride, especially the sample containing 10% bentonite. It can be concluded that the concrete with 10% bentonite can improve the resistance to chloride ion diffusion with high compressive strength

Cable traction tension overload protection device of shearer

    No full text
In view of problem of cable and cable traction clamp damaged by tension overloading of cable traction of shearer, a cable traction tension overload protection device of shearer was designed. The device adopts tension sensor to gather traction force signal produced in process of tracting cable by shearer, intelligent control circuit of microcomputer determines traction tension of cable of the shearer whether is overload or not through software analysis. If traction tension of the cable is overload, the microcomputer automatically controls reverse traction of the shearer, and reduces cable traction tension of the shearer to the lowest, and sends out a voice warning. The actual application verifies feasibility of the device

Driving Fatigue Detection Based on the Combination of Multi-Branch 3D-CNN and Attention Mechanism

    No full text
Fatigue driving is one of the main causes of traffic accidents today. In this study, a fatigue driving detection system based on a 3D convolutional neural network combined with a channel attention mechanism (Squeeze-and-Excitation module) is proposed. The model obtains information of multiple channels of grayscale, gradient and optical flow from the input frame. The temporal and spatial information contained in the feature map is extracted by three-dimensional convolution, after which the feature map is fed to the attention mechanism module to optimize the feature weights. EAR and MAR are used as fatigue analysis criteria and, finally, a full binary tree SVM classifier is used to output the four driving states. In addition, this study uses the frame aggregation strategy to solve the frame loss problem well and designs application software to record the driver’s status in real time while protecting the driver’s facial privacy and security. Compared with other classical fatigue driving detection methods, this method extracts features from temporal and spatial dimensions and optimizes the feature weights using the attention mechanism module, which significantly improves the fatigue detection performance. The experimental results show that 95% discriminative accuracy is achieved on the FDF dataset, which can be effectively applied to driving fatigue detection
