Why has China grown so fast? The role of physical and human capital formation
Cross-province growth regressions for China are estimated for the reform period. Two research questions are asked. Can the regressions help us to understand why China as a whole has grown so fast? What types of investment matter for China's growth? We address the problem of model uncertainty by adopting two approaches to model selection to consider a wide range of candidate predictors of growth. Starting from the baseline equation, the growth impact of physical and human capital is examined using panel data techniques. Both forms of capital promote economic growth. ‘Investment in innovation’ and private investment are found to be particularly important. Secondary school enrolment contributes to growth, and higher education enrolment even more so
Perceived efficacy and attitudes towards genetic science and science governance

The official published version can be obtained from the link below - © 2010 SAGE Publications.Arguments for public involvement in science and technology are often based on ideas of developing a more capable public and the assumed effects this may have for science. However, such a relationship is yet to be sufficiently explored and recent work indicates that a more involved public may have counterintuitive effects. Using nationally representative survey data for the UK and Northern Ireland, the effects of the public's own beliefs about involvement are explored. Developing the concept of "belief in public efficacy," findings suggest those who believe that the public might be able to affect the course of decision making have less approving attitudes towards future applications of genetic science; however, an individual's political efficacy does not significantly influence these attitudes. Furthermore, political efficacy and belief in public efficacy have some distinct and opposing relationships with the principles of governance people prefer. Overall, findings provide support for suggestions that it is simplistic to consider increasing public involvement as a way of increasing the approval of risky new technologies
The implementation and use of Ada on distributed systems with high reliability requirements
The use and implementation of Ada were investigated in distributed environments in which reliability is the primary concern. In particular, the focus was on the possibility that a distributed system may be programmed entirely in Ada so that the individual tasks of the system are unconcerned with which processors are being executed, and that failures may occur in the software and underlying hardware. A secondary interest is in the performance of Ada systems and how that performance can be gauged reliably. Primary activities included: analysis of the original approach to recovery in distributed Ada programs using the Advanced Transport Operating System (ATOPS) example; review and assessment of the original approach which was found to be capable of improvement; development of a refined approach to recovery that was applied to the ATOPS example; and design and development of a performance assessment scheme for Ada programs based on a flexible user-driven benchmarking system
Detection of faults and software reliability analysis
Multiversion or N-version programming was proposed as a method of providing fault tolerance in software. The approach requires the separate, independent preparation of multiple versions of a piece of software for some application. Specific topics addressed are: failure probabilities in N-version systems, consistent comparison in N-version systems, descriptions of the faults found in the Knight and Leveson experiment, analytic models of comparison testing, characteristics of the input regions that trigger faults, fault tolerance through data diversity, and the relationship between failures caused by automatically seeded faults
The properties of double-blind Dutch auctions in a clearing house; some new results for the Mendelson Model
In this paper, we re-examine Mendelson’s model for the equilibrium price of a double-blind Dutch auction with Poisson-distributed stochastic demand and supply. We present a number of new results. We focus on the various ways that demand and supply cross. We identify four different categories of crossing, extending Mendelson’s results which are based on a single category of crossing. Secondly, conditioning on quantity, we derive the joint distribution of the relevant demand and supply prices associated with such two-sided markets originally described by Bohm-Bawerk (1891). The distributional result is extended to the case where the limit orders on different sides of the market arrive at different rates. Finally, we derive the distributional properties of the price elasticities

Sequential variable selection as Bayesian pragmatism in linear factor models
We examine a popular practitioner methodology used in the construction of linear factor models whereby particular factors are increased/decreased in relative importance within the model. This allows model builders to customise models and, as such, reflect those factors that the client/modeller may think important. We call this process Pragmatic Bayesianism (or prag-Bayes for short) and we provide analysis which shows when such a procedure is likely to be successful
