The major aim of this study was to investigate the effects of learner, school, and teacher factors on learner performance in language of instruction (English and Afrikaans) and mathematics among learners in grades 9 and 11 in South Africa. The study also explored the methodological advantage of using hierarchical linear Modellling (HLM) over conventional statistical techniques in analysing multi-level data

A framework for assessing communicative language ability in two indigenous South African languages at grade 9 level
Presented at the 27th annual IAEA conference, 6 - 11 May, Rio Othon Palace Hotel, Rio de Janeiro, BrazilThe development of indigenous African languages in South Africa had been hampered by the apartheid policies in education during the colonial years. After the democratic elections of 1994, the government has shown commitment to develop these languages to the same status as English and Afrikaans. This study will endeavour to develop a framework for assessing communication language ability and to investigate the factors that impact on teaching and learning of communication language ability in two indigenous Africa languages
