Post-Incipience Cavitation Evolution of an Eccentric Journal Bearing

    Get PDF
Hypothesis of Gümbel is a statement of the initial state of an incompressible fluid film as governed by the hyperbolic differential equation. Olsson’s interphase condition, upon providing cross-boundary interface continuity, targets the Swift-Stieber state at the rupture boundary with a nonvanishing speed that is a function of the postulated cavitation morphology model; experimental photographic records suggest the rolling stream concept which combines an adhered film immediately downstream of the boundary and striated streams farther on. To study cavitation without end-leakage effects, the pre-incipience contiguous fluid film solution is given by the Sommerfeld solution with the ambient state and is reduced to the π-film, and the issue of post-incipience evolution is reduced to an appropriate interpretation of a suitably defined evolution time. To treat cavitation with allowance for end-leakage effects, computation of the pre-incipience contiguous film requires a two-dimensional adaptation of the Sommerfeld solution with a consistent spline interpolation scheme, and treatment of Olsson’s interphase condition is quite elaborate

The actuation voltage of microelectromechanical system (MEMS) \ud metal switches was investigated at temperatures ranging from 10 to 290 K. The investigation shows a 50% increase in the actuation voltage at low temperature. A comparison has been made using a published model and showed similar increment of actuation voltage at low temperature

Renal tubule necrosis and apoptosis modulation by A1 adenosine receptor expression

We have shown that A1 adenosine receptors (A1ARs) are cytoprotective against renal tubular necrosis and apoptosis both in vivo and in vitro. To study the role of A1AR numbers on renal epithelial cell survival, we stably overexpressed the human A1 receptor in a porcine renal tubule cell line and utilized primary cultures of proximal tubules obtained from A1AR knockout mice. Receptor-overexpressing cells were protected against peroxide-induced necrosis and tumor necrosis factor-α/cycloheximide-induced apoptosis. Conversely, cultured proximal tubule cells from receptor knockout mice showed more necrotic and apoptotic cell loss than corresponding cells from wild-type mice. Overexpression of the receptor resulted in a significantly higher baseline expression of both total and phosphorylated heat-shock protein (HSP)27; the latter due to A1 receptor enhancement of p38 and AP2 mitogen-activated protein kinase activities. The resistance to cell death in the porcine cells was reversed by selective A1 receptor antagonism and by a selective inhibitor of HSP synthesis. Receptor activation in wild-type mice in vivo led to increased total and phosphorylated HSP27, whereas receptor knockout mice showed decreased baseline and adenosine-mediated HSP phosphorylation. These studies show that endogenous A1AR activation produces cytoprotective effects in renal proximal tubules by modulating HSP27 signaling pathways

A Study on the Sudden Death of Entanglement

    Get PDF
The dynamics of entanglement and the phenomenon of entanglement sudden death (ESD) \cite{yu} are discussed in bipartite systems, measured by Wootters Concurrence. Our calculation shows that ESD appears whenever the system is open or closed and is dependent on the initial condition. The relation of the evolution of entanglement and energy transfer between the system and its surroundings is also studied.Comment: Comments and criticism are welcome. Accepted by Phys. Lett.

The Constraint of a General Effective Potential in Vector Torsion Coupled Conformally Induced Gravity

It is found that the deviation of an effective potential from the quartic form is related to the metric and vector torsion dependencies of the effective potential in the vector torsion coupled conformally induced gravity.Comment: 3pages Revtex 3.0, no figur

Measurement of Ultra-Low Potassium Contaminations with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry

Levels of trace radiopurity in active detector materials is a subject of major concern in low-background experiments. Among the radio-isotopes, \k40 is one of the most abundant and yet whose signatures are difficult to reject. Procedures were devised to measure trace potassium concentrations in the inorganic salt CsI as well as in organic liquid scintillator (LS) with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS), giving, respectively, the \k40-contamination levels of 1010\sim 10^{-10} and 1013\sim 10^{-13} g/g. Measurement flexibilities and sensitivities are improved over conventional methods. The projected limiting sensitivities if no excess of potassium signals had been observed over background are 8×10138 \times 10^{-13} g/g and 3×10173 \times 10^{-17} g/g for the CsI and LS, respectively. Studies of the LS samples indicate that the radioactive contaminations come mainly in the dye solutes, while the base solvents are orders of magnitude cleaner. The work demonstrate the possibilities of measuring naturally-occurring isotopes with the AMS techniques.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, 3 table

Phase Transition in Conformally Induced Gravity with Torsion

We have considered the quantum behavior of a conformally induced gravity in the minimal Riemann-Cartan space. The regularized one-loop effective potential considering the quantum fluctuations of the dilaton and the torsion fields in the Coleman-Weinberg sector gives a sensible phase transition for an inflationary phase in De Sitter space. For this effective potential, we have analyzed the semi-classical equation of motion of the dilaton field in the slow-rolling regime.Comment: 7pages, no figur

    Free Meixner states

Free Meixner states are a class of functionals on non-commutative polynomials introduced in math.CO/0410482. They are characterized by a resolvent-type form for the generating function of their orthogonal polynomials, by a recursion relation for those polynomials, or by a second-order non-commutative differential equation satisfied by their free cumulant functional. In this paper, we construct an operator model for free Meixner states. By combinatorial methods, we also derive an operator model for their free cumulant functionals. This, in turn, allows us to construct a number of examples. Many of these examples are shown to be trivial, in the sense of being free products of functionals which depend on only a single variable, or rotations of such free products. On the other hand, the multinomial distribution is a free Meixner state and is not a product. Neither is a large class of tracial free Meixner states which are analogous to the simple quadratic exponential families in statistics.Comment: 30 page

Measurement of Trace I-129 Concentrations in CsI Powder and Organic Liquid Scintillator with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry

Levels of trace radiopurity in active detector materials is a subject of major concern in low-background experiments. Procedures were devised to measure trace concentrations of I-129 in the inorganic salt CsI as well as in organic liquid scintillator with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) which leads to improvement in sensitivities by several orders of magnitude over other methods. No evidence of their existence in these materials were observed. Limits of < 6 X 10^{-13} g/g and < 2.6 X 10^{-17} g/g on the contaminations of I-129 in CsI and liquid scintillator, respectively, were derived. These are the first results in a research program whose goals are to develop techniques to measure trace radioactivity in detector materials by AMS.Comment: Proceedings of 10th International Conference on Accelerator Mass Spectrometr
