DWBA analysis of the 13C(6Li,d)17O reaction at 10 MeV/nucleon and its astrophysical implications

The value of the alpha spectroscopic factor (S_alpha) of the 6.356 MeV 1/2+ state of 17O is believed to have significant astrophysical implications due to the importance of the 13C(alpha,n)16O reaction as a possible source of neutron production for the s process. To further study this effect, an accurate measurement of the 13C(6Li,d)17O reaction at E_lab = 60 MeV has been performed recently by Kubono et al., who found a new value for the spectroscopic factor of the 6.356 MeV 1/2+ state of 17O based on a distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) analysis of these data. This new value, S_alpha approximately = 0.011, is surprisingly much smaller than those used previously in astrophysical calculations (S_alpha approximately = 0.3-0.7) and thus poses a serious question as to the role of the 13C(alpha,n)16O reaction as a source of neutron production. In this work we perform a detailed analysis of the same 13C(6Li,d)17O data within the DWBA as well as the coupled reaction channel (CRC) formalism. Our analysis yields an S_alpha value of over an order of magnitude larger than that of Kubono et al. for the 6.356 MeV 1/2+ state of 17O.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, minor changes, accepted by Nuclear Physics

Analyzing powers and cross sections for the elastic scattering of polarized 7Li by targets of 6Li, 7Li and 12C are shown to depend only on the properties of the projectile for momentum transfers of less than 1.0 fm-1. The result of a detailed analysis of the experimental data within the framework of the coupled channels model with ground state reorientation and transitions to the excited states of the projectile and targets included in the coupling schemes are presented. This work suggests that nuclear properties of weakly-bound nuclei can be tested by elastic scattering experiments, independent of the target used, if data are acquired for momentum transfers less than ~1.0 fm-1.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted in Phys. Direct characterization of photo-induced lattice dynamics in BaFe₂As₂

Ultrafast light pulses can modify electronic properties of quantum materials by perturbing the underlying, intertwined degrees of freedom. In particular, iron-based superconductors exhibit a strong coupling among electronic nematic fluctuations, spins and the lattice, serving as a playground for ultrafast manipulation. Here we use time-resolved X-ray scattering to measure the lattice dynamics of photoexcited BaFe2_{2}As2_{2}. On optical excitation, no signature of an ultrafast change of the crystal symmetry is observed, but the lattice oscillates rapidly in time due to the coherent excitation of an A1g_{1g} mode that modulates the Fe–As–Fe bond angle. We directly quantify the coherent lattice dynamics and show that even a small photoinduced lattice distortion can induce notable changes in the electronic and magnetic properties. Our analysis implies that transient structural modification can be an effective tool for manipulating the electronic properties of multi-orbital systems, where electronic instabilities are sensitive to the orbital character of bands

Coupling effects in the elastic scattering of 6^{6}He on 12^{12}C

To study the effect of the weak binding energy on the interaction potential between a light exotic nucleus and a target, elastic scattering of 6He at 38.3 MeV/nucleon on a 12C target was measured at Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL). The 6He beam was produced by fragmentation. The detection of the scattered particles was performed by the GANIL spectrometer. The energy resolution was good enough to separate elastic from inelastic scattering contributions. The measured elastic data have been analyzed within the optical model, with the real part of the optical potential calculated in the double-folding model using a realistic density-dependent nucleon-nucleon interaction and the imaginary part taken in the conventional Woods-Saxon (WS) form. A failure of the "bare" real folded potential to reproduce the measured angular distribution over the whole angular range suggests quite a strong coupling of the higher-order breakup channels to the elastic channel. To estimate the strength of the breakup effects, a complex surface potential with a repulsive real part (designed to simulate the polarization effects caused by the projectile breakup) was added to the real folded and imaginary WS potentials. A realistic estimate of the polarization potential caused by the breakup of the weakly bound 6He was made based on a parallel study of 6He+12C and 6Li+12C optical potentials at about the same energies

Energy dependence of fusion evaporation-residue cross sections in the Si28+12C reaction

Fusion evaporation-residue cross sections for the Si28+12C reaction have been measured in the energy range 18≤Ec.m.≤136 MeV using time-of-flight techniques. Velocity distributions of mass-identified reaction products were used to identify evaporation residues and to determine the complete-fusion cross sections at high energies. The data are in agreement with previously established systematics which indicate an entrance-channel mass-asymmetry dependence of the incomplete-fusion evaporation-residue process. The complete-fusion evaporation-residue cross sections and the deduced critical angular momenta are compared with earlier measurements and the predictions of existing models
