Napping after complex motor learning enhances juggling performance
AbstractThe present study examined whether a nap after complex motor learning enhanced the following day's physical performance. Eighteen volunteers met the inclusion criteria and were assigned to either a nap (n=9; men=5; mean age=21.0±1.5) or no-nap group (n=9; men=5; mean age=21.9±0.3). Participants practiced juggling in the morning and were tested immediately afterwards. Participants of the nap group were given a 70-minute nap opportunity after juggling practice, while the no-nap group stayed awake. Juggling performance was then tested in the evening (retest-1) and the next morning (retest-2). Two-way analysis of variance (group: nap, no-nap×time: test, retest-1, retest-2) found there was a significant effect of test time and a significant group×time interaction. The juggling performance of both groups improved from test to retest-1, respectively. However, the juggling performance level of the nap group was higher than that of the no-nap group at the retest-1. As predicted, a nap promptly after learning motor skills was associated with subsequently improved performance. Moreover, the juggling performance of the nap group showed additional significant improvements in the retest-2. In the no-nap group, however, there were no significant improvements in the juggling performance after nocturnal sleep. These results demonstrate that the benefits of a nap following learning were further enhanced after nocturnal sleep. The present results may provide justification for introducing nap periods into daily athletic training as an active method to improve performance
The Influence of the Attachment Style on Amelioration Process from Social Exclusion
It is known that responses to exclusion are influenced by individual differences. We focused on interpersonal attachment styles of individuals (anxious attachment, avoidant attachment) and investigated subjective responses to exclusion (Need-Threat), as well as attention to signs of exclusion and inclusion (Event-Related Brain Potential: P3b component). Participants played a ball-tossing game consisting of an inclusion session after an exclusion session. Results indicated no significant differences in need-threat scores between attachment styles after exclusion or inclusion sessions. Moreover, P3b amplitude for signs of exclusion (ball-tossing among others) decreased in inclusion sessions in individuals with high anxious attachment compared to those with low anxious attachment. Furthermore, P3b amplitude related to signs of inclusion (receiving balls) in individuals with high avoidant attachment was significantly less in inclusion sessions than in exclusion session
Software Defined Media: Virtualization of Audio-Visual Services
Internet-native audio-visual services are witnessing rapid development. Among
these services, object-based audio-visual services are gaining importance. In
2014, we established the Software Defined Media (SDM) consortium to target new
research areas and markets involving object-based digital media and
Internet-by-design audio-visual environments. In this paper, we introduce the
SDM architecture that virtualizes networked audio-visual services along with
the development of smart buildings and smart cities using Internet of Things
(IoT) devices and smart building facilities. Moreover, we design the SDM
architecture as a layered architecture to promote the development of innovative
applications on the basis of rapid advancements in software-defined networking
(SDN). Then, we implement a prototype system based on the architecture, present
the system at an exhibition, and provide it as an SDM API to application
developers at hackathons. Various types of applications are developed using the
API at these events. An evaluation of SDM API access shows that the prototype
SDM platform effectively provides 3D audio reproducibility and interactiveness

Functional relationships between cyclodextrin glucanotransferase from an alkalophilic Bacillus and α-amylases Site-directed mutagenesis of the conserved two Asp and one Glu residues
AbstractComparison of the amino acid sequences of cyclodextrin glucanotransferases (CGTases) with those of α-amylases revealed that two Asp and one Glu residues, which are considered to be the catalytic residues in α-amylases, were also conserved in CGTases. To analyze the function of the three conserved amino acid residues in CGTases, site-directed mutagenesis was carried out. The three mutant CGTases, in which Asp229, Glu257 and Asp328 were individually replaced by Asn or Gln, completely lost both their starch-degrading and β-cyclodextrin-forming activities, whereas another mutant CGTase, in which Glu264 replaced by Gln, retained these activities. The three inactive enzymes retained the ability to be bound to starch. These results suggest that Asp229, Glu257 and Asp328 play an important role in the enzymatic reaction catalyzed by CGTase and that a similar catalytic mechanism is present in both CGTases and α-amylases
Efficacy of Contact Needle Therapy for Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy
Cancer chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) often results in discontinuation of treatment with potentially useful anticancer drugs and may deteriorate the patient’s quality of life. This study investigated the effect of contact needle therapy (CNT) on CIPN caused by responsible chemotherapeutic agents as taxanes and oxaliplatin. Six patients with CIPN were treated with CNT. The severity of CIPN was evaluated using the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) version 4 and FACT/GOG-Ntx before and after CNT. After the treatment, all of the patients showed some improvement. Four patients showed apparent improvement in breakthrough pain. One of the cases had difficulty in walking because of CIPN in lower extremities, but after 2 times of CNT, he could walk without pain and could continue the chemotherapy. Although its putative mechanisms remain elusive, CNT has strong potential as an adjunctive therapy in CIPN. Well-designed clinical trials with adequate sample size and power are necessary to confirm the findings of this study
Anxiety sensitivity as a predictor of broad dimensions of psychopathology after cognitive behavioral therapy for panic disorder
Background: Panic disorder (PD) is a common disease and presents with broad dimensions of psychopathology. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is known to improve these broad dimensions of psychopathology in addition to PD symptoms. However, little is known about the predictors of treatment response in comorbid psychiatric symptoms after CBT for PD. Recent studies suggest that anxiety sensitivity (AS) may be a key vulnerability for PD. This study aimed to examine AS as a predictor of broad dimensions of psychopathology after CBT for PD. Materials and methods: In total, 118 patients with PD were treated with manualized group CBT. We used multiple regression analysis to examine the associations between 3 Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI) factors (physical concerns, mental incapacitation concerns, and social concerns) at baseline and the subscales of the Symptom Checklist-90 Revised (SCL-90-R) at endpoint. Results: Low levels of social concerns at baseline predicted low levels on 5 SCL-90-R subscales after CBT: interpersonal sensitivity, depression, hostility, paranoid ideation, and psychosis. High levels of mental incapacitation concerns significantly predicted low levels on 3 SCL-90-R subscales after treatment: interpersonal sensitivity, hostility, and paranoid ideation. Physical concerns at baseline did not predict broad dimensions of psychopathology. Conclusion: This study suggested that the social concerns and mental incapacitation concerns subscales of the ASI at baseline predicted several dimensions of psychopathology after CBT for PD. To improve comorbid psychopathology, it may be useful to direct more attention to these ASI subscales
