    The problem of electrode selection for neurophysiological monitoring, whether for routine clinical applications or special scientific research, still remains to be resolved. In addition to the classical types of electrode - cup (silver/silver chloride or gold) or needle electrodes, new self adhesive electrodes (e. g. zipprep electrodes) for rapid application and reliable recording have recently come onto the market. However, this electrode type can lead to superficial lesions of the skin or inflammatory infiltration, which so far have not been investigated. New developments in the field of cortex electrodes and so-called active electrodes are additionally discussed

    Mycoheterotrophic plants living on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi are generally enriched in <sup>13</sup>C, <sup>15</sup>N and <sup>2</sup>H isotopes

    1. Fully mycoheterotrophic plants are thought to obtain carbon exclusively from their root-associated fungal partners. The general enrichment of these plants in the heavy isotopes 13C and 15N suggests that fungi are the main nutrient source for these plants. Yet, the majority of studies have targeted mycoheterotrophic plants associated with ectomycorrhizal, orchid mycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungi, while mycoheterotrophic plants living on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi remain understudied. 2. Here, we sampled 13 species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fully mycoheterotrophic plants from five families and co-occurring autotrophic reference plants growing in forests of tropical South America, tropical South East Asia and temperate Australasia. We measured stable isotope natural abundances (δ13C, δ15N, δ2H and δ18O), determined total nitrogen concentrations and used high-throughput DNA sequencing to characterize the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal communities associated with the sampled mycoheterotrophic plants. 3. We observed a general enrichment in 13C and 15N isotopes across mycoheterotrophic plant families and geographic regions. We confirm cases where no 15N enrichment is present, but we show that in general arbuscular mycoheterotrophic plants are enriched in 15N. Moreover, we demonstrate for the first time that these plants are significantly enriched in 2H but not in 18O in relation to their autotrophic references. The fungal communities targeted by the mycoheterotrophs mainly consist of Glomeraceae and show strong association with the isotopic signatures and geographic origin of the plants. 4. Synthesis. Our findings enlarge the limited knowledge on the multi-element stable isotopic signatures of mycoheterotrophic plants living on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. We show that these plants are enriched in 13C and 2H as expected due to their mycoheterotrophic nutrition, and that in general they are also enriched in 15N, despite some exceptions. Variation in stable isotope signatures is likely influenced by plant taxonomy, geography and fungal community composition

    Suris tetrons: possible spectroscopic evidence for four-particle optical excitations of the 2D electron gas

    The excitations of a two-dimensional electron gas in quantum wells with intermediate carrier density (~10^{11} cm^{-2}), i.e., between the exciton-trion- and the Fermi-Sea range, are so far poorly understood. We report on an approach to bridge this gap by a magneto-photoluminescence study of modulation-doped (Cd,Mn)Te quantum well structures. Employing their enhanced spin splitting, we analyzed the characteristic magnetic-field behavior of the individual photoluminescence features. Based on these results and earlier findings by other authors, we present a new approach for understanding the optical transitions at intermediate densities in terms of four-particle excitations, the Suris tetrons, which were up to now only predicted theoretically. All characteristic photoluminescence features are attributed to emission from these quasi-particles when attaining different final states.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure

    Simulative Investigations of the Influence of Surface Indentations on Residual Stresses on Inner Raceways for Roller Element Bearings

    Resource-efficient machine elements are in the focus of current research. One of the most widely used machine elements are roller bearings. Thus, the optimization of bearings and their tribological properties promises to result in significant resource savings. Special focus is set on the bearing fatigue life, which may be significantly reduced by indentations on the raceways. The reduction in fatigue life can be caused by processes such as rolling over particles or by brinelling. These processes induce local stress peaks and lead to elastic-plastic deformations of the raceways. During the subsequent operation, the pile up of material around the indentations is flattened and hence the residual stresses change. Inside these so called shoulders stress pealcs, residual stresses and hardening effects occur possibly resulting in crack initiation, crack growth under cyclic loading, and eventually spalling of material. For deeper and more sharp-edged indentations the bearing fatigue life is reduced more. To quantify the influence of an indentation on the bearing rating life a calculation model was developed based on the approach of IOANNIDES, BERGLING and GABELLI. For this, a 3D-FE model is used to calculate the three dimensional stress fields by superposition of residual and load stresses

    Adenosine Type 1 (A ) Receptors Mediate Protection Against Myocardial 1 Infarction Produced by Chronic, Intermittent Ingestion of Ethanol in Dogs

    Background: Chronic consumption of small amounts of ethanol protects myocardium from ischemic injury. We tested the hypothesis that adenosine type 1 (A1) receptors mediate these beneficial effects. Methods: Dogs (n=37) were fed with ethanol (1.5 g/kg) or water mixed with dry food twice per day for 12 weeks, fasted overnight before experimentation, and instrumented for measurement of hemodynamics. Dogs received intravenous drug vehicle (50% polyethylene glycol in 0.1 N sodium hydroxide and 0.9% saline over 15 min) or the selective A1 receptor antagonist 8-cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine (DPCPX, 0.8 mg/kg over 15 min) and were subjected to a 60 min coronary artery occlusion followed by 3 h of reperfusion. Myocardial infarct size and transmural coronary collateral blood flow were measured with triphenyltetrazolium chloride staining and radioactive microspheres, respectively. Results: The area at risk (AAR) for infarction was similar between groups. Pretreatment with ethanol significantly reduced infarct size to 13±2% (n=7) of the AAR as compared to control experiments (26±2%; n=7). DPCPX abolished the protective effects of ethanol pretreatment (30±3%; n=7) but had no effect in dogs that did not receive ethanol (25±2%; n=7). No differences in transmural coronary collateral blood flow were observed between groups. Conclusions: The present findings indicate that chronic ingestion of small amounts of ethanol produces myocardial protection that persists after the discontinuation of ethanol. The results indicate that A1 receptors mediate ethanol-induced preconditioning in dogs independent of alterations in systemic hemodynamics or coronary collateral blood flow
