    Antarctic marine life under pressure

Next week, the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) convenes in Hobart, Tasmania, to examine the state of marine life in the Southern Ocean. As part of the Antarctic Treaty System, this convention entered into force in 1982, and its focus on the region’s environmental integrity has never been more important, given the increasing effects of climate change and commercial fishing. An important focus over the past 40 years has been Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba (hereafter krill), a keystone species that helps to hold this marine ecosystem together. Climate and fishing stresses should prompt the CCAMLR to address whether management of krill fishing is at a level that protects the Southern Ocean from losing its overall balance of marine life and the oceanic processes that regulate global climate. </jats:p

Properties of lubricants for refrigeration system with the low GWP refrigerants

    Get PDF
For the prevention of global warming, various low GWP refrigerants (R1234yf, R1234ze, R448A, R449A, R452A, R452B, R454B etc.) were proposed as the alternative to HFC refrigerants for refrigeration system. In this report, the combinations of the low GWP refrigerants and lubricants were evaluated. The evaluation items are physical properties (miscibility, solubility, viscosity, and electric property)and thermal stability

The variability in abundance of eugregarines living in the Antarctic krill

    Get PDF
The variability in abundance of eugregarines associated with the Antarctic krill Euphausia superba was studied using samples collected from the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula. Body length, maturity stage and moult stage with respect to variation in eugregarines infection in krill were examined. Body length was significantly correlated with abundance of eugregarines. The interaction between moult stage and maturity stage was statistically analyzed by ANCOVA with body length as the covariate. The analysis of moult stage did not show a significant effect on abundance of eugregarines while the interaction between maturity stage and body length showed significance. Larger krill have more eugregarines than smaller krill at the same maturity stage. Body length appears to be the most important factor determining the abundance of eugregarines

Antarctic krill and its Fishery: Current status and challenges. SCAR Antarctic Environments Portal.

The Antarctic krill is a dominant species of the Southern Ocean ecosystem, with possibly the largest biomass of any wild animal species on Earth. Krill play fundamental roles in marine food webs, including carbon cycling, and nutrient cycles. They are also the target for the largest fishery by tonnage caught in the Southern Ocean. The best estimate of circumpolar krill biomass is 379 million tonnes, but at regional scales krill biomass is highly variable from year to year. A krill abundance decline has been reported between the 1970s and the 2010s at the northern edge of krill habitat in the Atlantic sector. Farther south, summer seawater temperature remained below krill’s upper thermal limit, and abundance remained stable. Multiple analyses suggest a southward contraction of krill distribution in the southwest Atlantic. The krill fishery is managed by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR.org). The total fishery catch and the spatial concentration of that catch has been increasing due to recent technological advancement and commercial interest. New technology and coordination between scientists and the fishing industry can advance understanding of krill, particularly during winter and beneath sea ice. Sustained research support is important for improving management of the krill fishery under climate change

A workshop on future Australian-Japanese Antarctic cooperation was held on 12 June 2008 to exchange scientific information and to initiate a dialog to explore the way forward to further enhance and strengthen collaboration in Antarctic science between the two nations. The workshop was attended by four Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) scientists and more than ten National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR) scientists. Through a series of presentations detailing both countries\u27 projects, and the following discussion, the workshop agreed that there are compelling reasons for holding a joint seminar between Australia and Japan by early next year to prioritize and agree to areas of collaboration, and outline the sorts of projects to be reflected in research plans of both countries
