On the Evolutionary History of Stars and their Fossil Mass and Light
The total extragalactic background radiation can be an important test of the
global star formation history (SFH). Using direct observational estimates of
the SFH, along with standard assumptions about the initial mass function (IMF),
we calculate the total extragalactic background radiation and the observed
stellar density today. We show that plausible SFHs allow a significant range in
each quantity, but that their ratio is very tightly constrained. Current
estimates of the stellar mass and extragalactic background are difficult to
reconcile, as long as the IMF is fixed to the Salpeter slope above 1 Msun. The
joint confidence interval of these two quantities only agrees with that
determined from the allowed range of SFH fits at the 3-sigma level, and for our
best-fit values the discrepancy is about a factor of two. Alternative energy
sources that contribute to the background, such as active galactic nuclei
(AGN), Population III stars, or decaying particles, appear unlikely to resolve
the discrepancy. However, changes to the IMF allow plausible solutions to the
background problem. The simplest is an average IMF with an increased
contribution from stars around 1.5--4 Msun. A ``paunchy'' IMF of this sort
could emerge as a global average if low mass star formation is suppressed in
galaxies experiencing rapid starbursts. Such an IMF is consistent with
observations of star-forming regions, and would help to reconcile the fossil

Combinatorial synthesis and high-throughput photopotential and photocurrent screening of mixed-metal oxides for photoelectrochemical water splitting
A high-throughput method has been developed using a commercial piezoelectric inkjet printer for synthesis and characterization of mixed-metal oxide photoelectrode materials for water splitting. The printer was used to deposit metal nitrate solutions onto a conductive glass substrate. The deposited metal nitrate solutions were then pyrolyzed to yield mixed-metal oxides that contained up to eight distinct metals. The stoichiometry of the metal oxides was controlled quantitatively, allowing for the creation of vast libraries of novel materials. Automated methods were developed to measure the open-circuit potentials (Eoc), short-circuit photocurrent densities (Jsc), and current density vs. applied potential (J–E) behavior under visible light irradiation. The high-throughput measurement of Eoc is particularly significant because open-circuit potential measurements allow the interfacial energetics to be probed regardless of whether the band edges of the materials of concern are above, close to, or below the values needed to sustain water electrolysis under standard conditions. The Eoc measurements allow high-throughput compilation of a suite of data that can be associated with the composition of the various materials in the library, to thereby aid in the development of additional screens and to form a basis for development of theoretical guidance in the prediction of additional potentially promising photoelectrode compositions
Synthesizing Imperative Programs from Examples Guided by Static Analysis
We present a novel algorithm that synthesizes imperative programs for
introductory programming courses. Given a set of input-output examples and a
partial program, our algorithm generates a complete program that is consistent
with every example. Our key idea is to combine enumerative program synthesis
and static analysis, which aggressively prunes out a large search space while
guaranteeing to find, if any, a correct solution. We have implemented our
algorithm in a tool, called SIMPL, and evaluated it on 30 problems used in
introductory programming courses. The results show that SIMPL is able to solve
the benchmark problems in 6.6 seconds on average.Comment: The paper is accepted in Static Analysis Symposium (SAS) '17. The

Implications of the Visible and X-Ray Counterparts to GRB970228
The gamma-ray burst source GRB970228 has been observed after a delay of 8--12
hours in X-rays and after one day in visible and near infrared light. This
marks the first detection of emission at lower frequencies following the
gamma-ray observation of a GRB and the first detection of any visible
counterpart to a GRB. We consider possible delayed visible and X-ray emission
mechanisms, and conclude that the intrinsic gamma-ray activity continued at a
much reduced intensity for at least a day. There are hints of such continued
activity in other GRB, and future observations can decide if this is true of
GRB in general. The observed multi-band spectrum of GRB970228 agrees with the
predictions of relativistic shock theory when the flux is integrated over a
time longer than that required for a radiating electron to lose its energy.Comment: 5 pp., tex, 1 figur
Systematic review of the use of financial incentives in treatments for obesity and overweight
Nine studies met the criteria for inclusion in this systematic review of randomized controlled trials of treatments for obesity and overweight involving the use of financial incentives, with reported follow-up of at least 1 year. All included trials were of behavioural obesity treatments. Justification of sample size and blinding procedure were not mentioned in any study. Attrition was well described in three studies and no study was analysed on an intention to treat basis. Participants were mostly women recruited through media advertisements. Mean age ranged from 35.7 to 52.8 years, and mean body mass index from 29.3 to 31.8 kg m−2. Results from meta-analysis showed no significant effect of use of financial incentives on weight loss or maintenance at 12 months and 18 months. Further sub-analysis by mode of delivery and amount of incentives although also non-statistically significant were suggestive of very weak trends in favour of use of amounts greater than 1.2% personal disposable income, rewards for behaviour change rather than for weight, rewards based on group performance rather than for individual performance and rewards delivered by non-psychologists rather than delivered by psychologists.The Health Services Research Unit is funded by the Chief Scientist Office of the Scottish Executive Health Department. Gravitational energy
Observers at rest in a stationary spacetime flat at infinity can measure
small amounts of rest-mass+internal energies+kinetic energies+pressure energy
in a small volume of fluid attached to a local inertial frame. The sum of these
small amounts is the total "matter energy" for those observers. The total
mass-energy minus the matter energy is the binding gravitational energy.
Misner, Thorne and Wheeler evaluated the gravitational energy of a
spherically symmetric static spacetime. Here we show how to calculate
gravitational energy in any static and stationary spacetime for isolated
sources with a set of observers at rest.
The result of MTW is recovered and we find that electromagnetic and
gravitational 3-covariant energy densities in conformastatic spacetimes are of
opposite signs. Various examples suggest that gravitational energy is negative
in spacetimes with special symmetries or when the energy-momentum tensor

Generalized mean-field study of a driven lattice gas
Generalized mean-field analysis has been performed to study the ordering
process in a half-filled square lattice-gas model with repulsive nearest
neighbor interaction under the influence of a uniform electric field. We have
determined the configuration probabilities on 2-, 4-, 5-, and 6-point clusters
excluding the possibility of sublattice ordering. The agreement between the
results of 6-point approximations and Monte Carlo simulations confirms the
