Ovarian Fibrothecoma with Acute Torsion and Extensive Cystic Degeneration after Long Quiescence in a Young Patient
Ovarian Fibrothecomas are rare tumors of the ovary classified under sex cord stromal tumors. They are benign solid ovarian tumors that commonly occur in older women. They usually present with menstrual complaints although rarely asymptomatic tumors also occur. Some of them are known to undergo torsion and cystic degeneration when they are very big in size. We report a rare case of a young woman with a medium sized ovarian fibrothecoma which had all the above mentioned in combination interestingly and presented acutely after years of quiescence
Malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) of the duodenum occurrence: Case report Malignant gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) of the duodenum -A rare occurrence: Case report
Abstract Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Most of the cases are located in the stomach followed by the small intestine. They arise from the interstitial cells of cajal, which are loc Malignant GISTs are rare type of tumors in GIT. Small intestine GIST is more likely to be malignant compared to stomach. Here we reported such a rare case of malignant GIST in a 54 y patient who came to the hospital with complaints of pain and mass in abdomen. Ultrasound revealed a mass originating from the duodenum. Provisional clinical diagnosis of duodenal carcinoma was considered preoperatively. Patient underwent complete surgical excision of the tumor. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of malignant GIST. As the recurrence rate for malignant GIST is high, patient was kept on follow up
A study of Bcl-2 and p-53 immunostaining expressions in colonic carcinomas
Background: Colorectal cancer burden has been steadily rising in women. It was the fourth most common cancer in 1975 and has reached the second position by 1990, with about 49% increase in the number of cases globally over a period of 15 yrs. From 1999–2008, the rate of people dying from colorectal cancer has varied, depending on their race and ethnicity.
Objective: To study Bcl-2 and p-53 immunostaining expressions in colonic carcinomas.
Methods: The present study is both a retrospective and a prospective study. The study is based on histomorphological evaluation of 30 resected specimen of Colorectal Carcinomas received at the department of Pathology, Osmania General Hospital in a 2 year period from June 2009 to May 2011. The most representative block for all 30 cases was then selected for immune histochemical analysis of p-53 protein and Bcl-2 Oncoprotein for p-53 immunostaining, we used the DO-7 monoclonal antibody (dilution 1:30; DAKO), and, for Bcl-2, the monoclonal antibody 124 was used (dilution 1:80; DAKO).
Results: Positive staining for p-53 protein was detected in 56.67% ( 17/30 ) of colorectal adenocarcinomas. There is statistically no significant association observed between p53 expression and Dukes' stage, TNM stage or Histological grade (p value > 0.05). Similarly no association was found between expression of p-53 and other patient variables, such as age, sex, location of tumor, & tumor differentiation. In the present study statistically there is no significant association between Bcl-2 & p-53 either individually or combined together with any of the parameters (like age, sex, tumor location, Dukes' stage, Histological grade & TNM stage).
Conclusion: Though not statistically significant, to comment as the optimism expressed by certain investigators due to the low number of cases taken up for the present study, a large study group is needed to comment on the prognostic significance of the Bcl-2 & p-53 immuno profile individually and in a combined variation to predict the clinical outcome
Granulomatous lymphadenopathy masquerading as pleomorphic adenoma: A clinical and diagnostic dilemma
Lymphadenopathy can masquerade as other pathological entities due to their proximity to many sites, thus clinical misjudgment can happen. Ours is such example where Granulomatous cervical lymphadenopathy is clinically thought of as Pleomorphic adenoma of Parotid gland. They need careful review, radiological correlation before committing for final impression
Histomorphological Spectrum of Helicobacter Pylori Positive Gastric Biopsies - A 2 Year Prospective Study
Abstract: Helicobacter pylorus (H. pylori) a spiral, urease producing organism and is a important pathogenic factor in peptic ulcer disease (PUD). Extensive molecular studies suggest that the bacteria cause gastritis by stimulating production of proinflammatory cytokines and by directly injuring epithelial cells. Study was done to know the gastric mucosal histological features in H. pylori positive gastric biopsies and categorization of lesions, and also to know the association of H. pylori with various parameters such as age, sex, site, colonization of organisms, spicy diet, smoking and alcohol intake, Intestinal Metaplasia. A total of 261 gastric biopsies were received. Out of which 131 biopsies were positive for H. pylori were included in this study by using various clinical parameters. In our study, dominant age group was 30 -60 yrs with 83 (63.4%) cases and H. pylori was associated with chronic gastritis -115 (87 %), Male to female sex ratio was 1.04: 1. Antrum was the predominant biopsied site which constituted 117 cases out of a total of 131 cases i.e. 87.3%.14 biopsies were from gastric body i.e. 10.4% and 3 biopsies were from fundus region. Mild colonization was seen in 73 (54.5%) biopsies, moderate in 29 (21.6%) biopsies and severe in 32 (23.8%) biopsies, total being 134, as 3 patients had biopsies from 2 different sites. There were 2 (1.5%) cases associated with Gastric ulceration in our study. One case each was associated with granuloma formation and malignancy, in the background of chronic active gastritis
