Radio signals from very large showers

    Get PDF
Radio signals from air showers with electron sizes in the range 1 x 10 to the 7th power to 2 x 10 to the 9th power were detected at 50kHz, 170kHz, and 1,647kHz at large core distances in the Akeno square kilometers air-shower array. The field strength is higher than that expected from any mechanisms hitherto proposed

Causal Forest Approach For Site-Specific Input Management via On-Farm Precision Experimentation

    Get PDF
Estimating site-specific crop yield response to changes to input (e.g., seed, fertilizer) management is a critical step in making economically optimal site-specific input management recommendations. Past studies have attempted to estimate yield response functions using various Machine Learning (ML) methods, including the Random Forest (RF), Boosted Random Forest (BRF), and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) methods. This study proposes use of the Causal Forest (CF) model, which is one of the emerging ML methods that comprise “Causal Machine Learning.” Unlike previous yield-prediction-oriented ML methods, CF focuses strictly on estimating heterogeneous treatment effects (changes in yields that result from changes in input application rates) of inputs. We report results of using Monte Carlo simulations assuming various production scenarios to test the effectiveness of CF in estimating site-specific economically optimal nitrogen rates (EONRs), comparing CF with the yield-prediction-oriented ML methods RF, BRF, and CNN. CF\u27s estimations of site-specific EONRs were superior under all scenarios considered. We also show that the model’s yield prediction accuracy need not imply EONR prediction accuracy. The Direction of mobile evolution examined through the NTT DoCoMo strategy, Mobile Frontier

    Get PDF
NTT DoCoMo is Japan\u27s biggest mobile service provider. They added extra value into cellular phone as telephone , and contributed to the explosive spread of the mobile phone in Japan. They have still led Japan as a country with the world\u27s largest mobile Internet. The mobile phone now changes our lifestyles or work styles, and has a great influence also on business. In 1997, NTT DoCoMo created the company vision towards the year 2010, Mobile Frontier . It consists of five concepts, named MAGIC , and indicates the mobile phone figure in the future as a whole. I regard it as a guideline of this paper, and examine the direction of mobile evolution by researching the following topics: the present situation, the issues needed to realize each concept, and the future. At first, I state the background of the mobile phone spread in Japan and the cultural aspects peculiar to Japan. After that, I examine the mobile evolution along with the five concepts. The objective of this paper is to refer to and understand the vision of a leading company in the telecommunication field, and consider mobile communications\u27 influence and applications in the future. The goal is to expand knowledge in the present situation of the mobile phone and the trend towards future mobile, and to examine the direction the Mobile Frontier aims

Arrival time distributions of electrons in air showers with primary energies above 10 (18)eV observed at 900m above sea level

    Get PDF
Detection of air showers with primary energies above 10 to the 19th power eV with sufficient statistics is extremely important in an astrophysical aspect related to the Greisen cut off and the origin of such high energy cosmic rays. Recently, a method is proposed to observe such giant air showers by measuring the arrival time distributions of air-shower particles at large core distances with a mini array. Experiments to measure the arrival time distributions of muons were started in 1981 and those of electrons in early 1983 in the Akeno air-shower array (930 gcm cm squared atmospheric depth, 900m above sea level). During the time of observation, the detection area of the Akeno array was expanded from 1 sq km to sq km in 1982 and to 20 sq km in 1984. Now the arrival time distribution of electrons and muons can be measured for showers with primary energies above 1019eV at large core distances

Longitudinal development of muons in large air showers studies from the arrival time distributions measured at 900m above sea level

    Get PDF
The arrival time distributions of muons with energies above 1.0GeV and 0.5GeV have been measured in the Akeno air-shower array to study the longitudinal development of muons in air showers with primary energies in the range 10 to the 17th power to 10 to the 18th power ev. The average rise times of muons with energies above 1.0GeV at large core distances are consistent with those expected from very high multiplicity models and, on the contrary, with those expected from the low multiplicity models at small core distances. This implies that the longitudinal development at atmospheric depth smaller than 500 cm square is very fast and that at larger atmospheric depths is rather slow

The Combustion Process in Swirl Chamber Type Diesel Engines

    Get PDF
High-speed motion pictures taken through glass windows in a full-scale engine, have led to the following knowledge about the combustion process in a swirl chamber type Diesel engine. The gas in the swirl chamber rotates in the same direction throughout the combustion and, after ignition, flows out into the main chamber from its periphery, layer by layer. The fuel-air distribution in the swirl chamber, which depends primarily on the direction of fuel injection, has a predominant influence on the subsequent combustion process. In the case of fuel injection along the air-swirl, the formation of an overrich mixture in the peripheral zone brings about two favorable factors for a rapid and complete combustion ; one is the possibility of an earlier outflow of the mixture into the main chamber, and the other is the most effective use of thermal mixing effect in the swirl chamber. In addition, these factors were discussed in relation to the performance of a practical engine

The influence of the location where ignition starts on gas ejection from the pre-combustion chamber of a Diesel engine has been studied by both theoretical calculation and a simplified model. Possibility of an application of the results obtained was ascertained by a practical engine

Factors in Stimulating Evacuation Behavior During Floods

    Get PDF
The Northern Kyushu Torrential Rain in July 2012 killed 31 people and destroyed more than 2,100 houses. The maximum rainfall per hour and per 24 hours were recorded at 108 mm and 507.5 mm, respectively. It also caused extensive damage to the Tatsuta area in Kumamoto City. Some residents stayed at home in the flooded area and were rescued by boats or helicopters because an evacuation order was delayed by the local government. On the other hand, many residents evacuated in time. We surveyed this evacuation behavior, awareness of disaster prevention, and the social capital, etc. Next, we analyzed the factors in promoting evacuation on the flood and made the evacuation behavior model. As a result, it was indicated that the factors in promoting evacuation on the flood were to check the river conditions and to be advised to evacuate by their neighbors. Furthermore, it was made clear that social capital in the community affected the practical ability of disaster prevention activities
