Relativistic scattering of a fast spinning neutron star by a massive black hole
The orbital dynamics of fast spinning neutron stars encountering a massive bh with unbounded orbits are investigated using the quadratic-in-spin mpd formulation. We consider the motion of the spinning neutron stars with astrophysically relevant speed in the gravity field of the BH. For such slow-speed scattering, the hyperbolic orbits followed by these neutron stars all have near the e = 1 eccentricity, and have distinct properties compared with those of e ≫ 1. We have found that compared with geodesic motion, the spin-orbit and spin-spin coupling will lead to a variation of scattering angles at spatial infinity, and this variation is more prominent for slow-speed scattering than fast-speed scattering. Such a variation leads to an observable difference in pulse-arrival-time within a few hours of observation, and up to a few days or months for larger BH masses or longer spinning periods. Such a relativistic pulsar-BH system also emits a burst of gravitational waves (GWs) in the sensitivity band of LISA, and for optimal settings, can be seen up to 100 Mpc away. On p_T-broadening of high energy partons associated with the LPM effect in a finite-volume QCD medium
We study the contributions from radiation to -broadening of a high
energy parton traversing a QCD medium with a finite length . The interaction
between the parton and the medium is described by decorrelated static multiple
scattering. Amplitudes of medium-induced gluon emission and parton self-energy
diagrams are evaluated in the soft gluon limit in the BDMPS formalism. We find
both the double-logarithmic correction from incoherent scattering, which is
parametrically the same as that in single scattering, and the logarithmic
correction from the LPM effect. Therefore, we expect a parametrically large
correction from radiation to the medium-induced -broadening in

Unsupervised visual domain adaptation via dictionary evolution
© 2016 IEEE. In real-word visual applications, distribution mismatch between samples from different domains may significantly degrade classification performance. To improve the generalization capability of classifier across domains, domain adaptation has attracted a lot of interest in computer vision. This work focuses on unsupervised domain adaptation which is still challenging because no labels are available in the target domain. Most of the attention has been dedicated to seeking domain-invariant feature by exploring the shared structure between domains, ignoring the valuable discriminative information contained in the labeled source data. In this paper, we propose a Dictionary Evolution (DE) approach to construct discriminative features robust to domain shift. Specifically, DE aims to adapt a discriminative dictionary learnt based on labeled source samples to unlabeled target samples through a gradual transition process. We show that the learnt dictionary is endowed with cross-domain data representation ability and powerful discriminant capability. Empirical results on real world data sets demonstrate the advantages of the proposed approach over competing methods

Phase diagram and spin-glass phenomena in electron-doped La1-xHfxMnO3 (0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) manganite oxides
The effects of tetravalent hafnium doping on the structural, transport, and magnetic properties of polycrystalline La1−xHfxMnO3 (LHMO) (0.05 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) were investigated systematically. LHMO exhibited a typical colossal magnetoresistance effect via the double-exchange between Mn2+ and Mn3+ ions, instead of that between Mn3+ and Mn4+ ions in hole-doped manganites. A phase diagram was obtained for the first time through magnetization and resistance measurements in a broad temperature range. As the Hf concentration varied from x = 0.05 to 0.3, the Curie point and metal-to-insulator transition temperature increased significantly, whereas the magnetization and resistivity decreased remarkably. An abnormal enhancement of the magnetization was observed at about 42 K. It was further confirmed that a second magnetic phase MnO2 in LHMO gives rise to such a phenomenon. The possible causes are discussed in detail. The dynamic magnetic properties of LHMO, including relaxation and aging processes, were studied, demonstrating a spin-glass state at low temperature accompanied by a ferromagnetic phase.published_or_final_versio
Trans-dominant cellular inhibition of DC-SIGN-mediated HIV-1 transmission
BACKGROUND: Dendritic cell (DC) transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to CD4+ T cells occurs across a point of cell-cell contact referred to as the infectious synapse. The relationship between the infectious synapse and the classically defined immunological synapse is not currently understood. We have recently demonstrated that human B cells expressing exogenous DC-SIGN, DC-specific intercellular adhesion molecule-3 (ICAM-3)-grabbing nonintegrin, efficiently transmit captured HIV type 1 (HIV-1) to CD4+ T cells. K562, another human cell line of hematopoietic origin that has been extensively used in functional analyses of DC-SIGN and related molecules, lacks the principal molecules involved in the formation of immunological synaptic junctions, namely major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules and leukocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1). We thus examined whether K562 erythroleukemic cells could recapitulate efficient DC-SIGN-mediated HIV-1 transmission (DMHT). RESULTS: Here we demonstrate that DMHT requires cell-cell contact. Despite similar expression of functional DC-SIGN, K562/DC-SIGN cells were inefficient in the transmission of HIV-1 to CD4+ T cells when compared with Raji/DC-SIGN cells. Expression of MHC class II molecules or LFA-1 on K562/DC-SIGN cells was insufficient to rescue HIV-1 transmission efficiency. Strikingly, we observed that co-culture of K562 cells with Raji/DC-SIGN cells impaired DMHT to CD4+ T cells. The K562 cell inhibition of transmission was not directly exerted on the CD4+ T cell targets and required contact between K562 and Raji/DC-SIGN cells. Do neighbourhood traffic-related air pollution and socio-economic status moderate the associations of the neighbourhood physical environment with cognitive function? Findings from the AusDiab study
Characteristics of the neighbourhood environment, including the built and natural environment, area-level socio-economic status (SES) and air pollution, have been linked to cognitive health. However, most studies have focused on single neighbourhood characteristics and have not considered the extent to which the effects of environmental factors may interact. We examined the associations of measures of the neighbourhood built and natural environment, area-level SES and traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) with two cognitive function domains (memory and processing speed), and the extent to which area-level SES and TRAP moderated the associations. We used cross-sectional data from the AusDiab3 study, an Australian cohort study of adults (mean age: 61 years) in 2011–12 (N = 4141) for which geocoded residential addresses were available. Spatial data were used to create composite indices of built environment complexity (population density, intersection density, non-commercial land use mix, commercial land use) and natural environment (parkland and blue spaces). Area-level SES was obtained from national census indices and TRAP was based on estimates of annual average levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Confounder-adjusted generalised additive mixed models were used to estimate the independent associations of the environmental measures with cognitive function and the moderating effects of area-level SES and TRAP. The positive associations between built environment complexity and memory were stronger in those living in areas with higher SES and lower NO2 concentrations. A positive association between the natural environment and memory was found only in those living in areas with lower NO2 concentrations and average or below-average SES. Built environment complexity and the natural environment were positively related to processing speed. Complex urban environments and access to nature may benefit cognitive health in ageing populations. For higher-order cognitive abilities, such as memory, these positive effects may be stronger in areas with lower levels of TRAP
Evaluation of Negation and Uncertainty Detection and its Impact on Precision and Recall in Search
Radiology reports contain information that can be mined using a search engine for teaching, research, and quality assurance purposes. Current search engines look for exact matches to the search term, but they do not differentiate between reports in which the search term appears in a positive context (i.e., being present) from those in which the search term appears in the context of negation and uncertainty. We describe RadReportMiner, a context-aware search engine, and compare its retrieval performance with a generic search engine, Google Desktop. We created a corpus of 464 radiology reports which described at least one of five findings (appendicitis, hydronephrosis, fracture, optic neuritis, and pneumonia). Each report was classified by a radiologist as positive (finding described to be present) or negative (finding described to be absent or uncertain). The same reports were then classified by RadReportMiner and Google Desktop. RadReportMiner achieved a higher precision (81%), compared with Google Desktop (27%; p < 0.0001). RadReportMiner had a lower recall (72%) compared with Google Desktop (87%; p = 0.006). We conclude that adding negation and uncertainty identification to a word-based radiology report search engine improves the precision of search results over a search engine that does not take this information into account. Our approach may be useful to adopt into current report retrieval systems to help radiologists to more accurately search for radiology reports
