    Residential neighbourhood greenspace is associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease: A prospective cohort study

    Background: Living in a greener neighbourhood may reduce the risk of developing incident cardiovascular disease, but evidence is limited by reliance on cross-sectional comparisons. We use data from a longitudinal study with a time-independent measure of risk to explore the association between exposure to greenspace and cardiovascular disease. Methods: Data was from the European Prospective Investigation of Cancer Norfolk UK cohort, baseline 1993–1997 (n = 24,420). Neighbourhoods were defined as 800m radius zones around participants’ home, according to their home postcode (zip code) in the year 2000. Greenspace exposure was identified using classified satellite imagery. Adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression examined associations between greenspace and incident cardiovascular disease. Mediation analysis assessed if physical activity mediated associations, whilst modification by rurality, socio-economic status and age was explored. Results: The mean age of participants was 59.2 years at baseline, 54.7% were female, and mean follow-up time was 14.5 years. Individuals living in the greenest neighbourhood quartile had a 7% lower relative hazard of developing cardiovascular disease than other neighbourhoods (HR 0.93; 95% CI 0.88, 0.97; p = 0.003) after adjusting for age, sex, BMI, prevalent diabetes and socio-economic status (SES). Physical activity did not mediate the relationship (greenest compared to the least green quartile HR 0.99; 95% CI 0.97, 1.01; p = 0.416). Models predicted incidence of cardiovascular disease in the least green neighbourhoods (19.4% greenspace on average) would fall by 4.8% (95% CI 1.6%, 8.2% p = 0.003) if they were as green as the average neighbourhood (59.0% greenspace). Occupation moderated the relationship, whereby exposure to greenspace was not associated with incident CVD for participants engaged in manual occupations. Conclusions: Greener home neighbourhoods may protect against risk of cardiovascular disease even after accounting for SES, whilst the mechanism does not appear to be strongly associated with physical activity. Putative causal mechanisms require investigation

    Measuring activity in patients with sarcoidosis - a pilot trial of two wrist-worn accelerometer devices

    Introduction: Increasing physical activity is associated with health benefits. Reduced physical activity has been noted in sarcoidosis, particularly where fatigue co-exists. Monitoring physical activity is possible with wrist-worn devices. This study compared two available devices to determine patient preference and compare wear-time, with a secondary outcome of comparing device outputs with fatigue scores. Methods: Patients with sarcoidosis wore two wrist-worn activity monitors (GENEActiv actiwatch and Actigraph GT3X-bt) separately for seven days each. Participants were randomly allocated to receive either device first. Participants completed the Fatigue Assessment Scale (FAS) questionnaire immediately before wearing the first device. All participants completed a questionnaire of their perception regarding each device after the wear period. Data from the devices was analysed for total wear time, time spent in moderate or vigorous activity (MVPA) and for time spent in sedentary behaviours. Results: Twelve patients with sarcoidosis were included. The GENEActiv device was preferred by ten (83.3%) participants. Wear time was greater with the GENEActiv device (1354 minutes/day vs 1079 minutes/day). Time spent in MVPA was slightly higher when recorded by the GENEActiv compared with the Actigraph. Moderately strong correlation was seen between FAS scores and sedentary time (r=-0.554), light activity (r=-0.585) and moderate activity (r=0.506). Discussion: A clear preference was demonstrated for the GENEActiv. This was reflected in higher wear time and suggests the device can be comfortably worn 24 hours per day. Data from this small cohort also suggests there is correlation between fatigue and activity scores in patients with sarcoidosis

    Community environment, cognitive impairment and dementia in later life: results from the Cognitive Function and Ageing Study

    Background: Few studies have investigated the impact of the community environment, as distinct from area deprivation, on cognition in later life. This study explores cross-sectional associations between cognitive impairment and dementia and environmental features at the community level in older people. Method: The postcodes of the 2424 participants in the year-10 interview of the Cognitive Function and Ageing Study in England were mapped into small area level geographical units (Lower-layer Super Output Areas) and linked to environmental data in government statistics. Multilevel logistic regression was conducted to investigate associations between cognitive impairment (defined as MMSE3 in GMS-AGECAT) and community level measurements including area deprivation, natural environment, land use mix and crime. Sensitivity analyses tested the impact of people moving residence within the last two years. Results: Higher levels of area deprivation and crime were not significantly associated with cognitive impairment and dementia after accounting for individual level factors. Living in areas with high land use mix was significantly associated with a nearly 60% reduced odds of dementia (OR: 0.4; 95% CI: 0.2, 0.8) after adjusting for individual level factors and area deprivation, but there was no linear trend for cognitive impairment. Increased odds of dementia (OR: 2.2, 95% CI: 1.2, 4.2) and cognitive impairment (OR: 1.4, 95% CI: 1.0, 2.0) were found in the highest quartile of natural environment availability. Findings were robust to exclusion of the recently relocated. Conclusion: Features of land use have complex associations with cognitive impairment and dementia. Further investigations should focus on environmental influences on cognition to inform health and social policies

    Understanding barium sulfate precipitation onto stainless steel

    This paper investigates the influence of barium sulfate scaling and scaling inhibitors on the electrochemical behaviour of stainless steel. The results of a synchrotron radiation grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (SR-GIXRD) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) study on stainless steel shows that different scaling inhibitors interact uniquely with the substrate when barium sulfate is precipitated on the electrode surface. The main effect of the substrate in the presence of inhibitor is a tendency to form smaller barium sulfate particles. The SR-GIXRD patterns obtained in the presence of the two inhibitors were different to each other and to the control, with the carboxylate showing greater amounts of barite solids precipitated together with iron(III) and (II) sulfate, while the phosphonate showed low amounts of barite solid were precipitated. The presence of iron sulfates on the electrode surface as detected by SR-GIXRD, in the case of NTA, suggests that scaling inhibitors are not alwaysbenign, and can promote the dissolution of iron species from the substrate

    On Predictive Modeling for Optimizing Transaction Execution in Parallel OLTP Systems

    A new emerging class of parallel database management systems (DBMS) is designed to take advantage of the partitionable workloads of on-line transaction processing (OLTP) applications. Transactions in these systems are optimized to execute to completion on a single node in a shared-nothing cluster without needing to coordinate with other nodes or use expensive concurrency control measures. But some OLTP applications cannot be partitioned such that all of their transactions execute within a single-partition in this manner. These distributed transactions access data not stored within their local partitions and subsequently require more heavy-weight concurrency control protocols. Further difficulties arise when the transaction's execution properties, such as the number of partitions it may need to access or whether it will abort, are not known beforehand. The DBMS could mitigate these performance issues if it is provided with additional information about transactions. Thus, in this paper we present a Markov model-based approach for automatically selecting which optimizations a DBMS could use, namely (1) more efficient concurrency control schemes, (2) intelligent scheduling, (3) reduced undo logging, and (4) speculative execution. To evaluate our techniques, we implemented our models and integrated them into a parallel, main-memory OLTP DBMS to show that we can improve the performance of applications with diverse workloads.Comment: VLDB201

    Modelling environmental equity: Exposure to environmental urban noise pollution in Birmingham, UK

    This paper examines the extent to which inequalities in noise exposure are present in the city of Birmingham in the English midlands. Estimates of road and rail noise levels were made using established sound propagation models and were combined with data on noise generated from the city's airport. Demographic details from the 1991 UK Census provided information on population age, ethic makeup, and deprivation. No relationship was established between noise exposure and population age, and there was only rather weak evidence of an association between noise exposure and ethnicity. However, greater disparities were observed in estimated noise exposures and levels of socio-economic deprivation. The implications of these findings with regard to possible efforts to reduce urban noise levels are discussed

    Influence of Food Plots on Nothern Bobwhite Movements, Habitat Use, and Home Range

    Natural resource managers at the Fort Riley Military Reservation in Kansas have established plantings to provide winter food for northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) since 1959. These food plots have the potential for reducing movements and home range sizes of bobwhites during winter because birds should apparently need to forage over less area to obtain sufficient food. To determine if this was occurring, we conducted a 3-year radio telemetry study of bobwhites on Fort Riley. We equipped 511 bobwhites with radio transmitters and followed their movements and habitat use from October through March, beginning in 1994. Daily movements of bobwhites near food plots varied by field season and study site, but generally did not differ significantly between food plot and non-food plot areas. Home ranges of bobwhites did not differ significantly between food plot and non-food plot areas, study site, or field season. Prairie habitat always was used significantly less than its proportional availability by bobwhites. Food plots were used significantly more than their proportional availability during 2 of 3 field seasons. Habitat use by bobwhites on the 2 study sites differed between food plot and non-food plot areas

    Initial test results on bolometers for the Planck high frequency instrument

    We summarize the fabrication, flight qualification, and dark performance of bolometers completed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the High Frequency Instrument (HFI) of the joint ESA/NASA Herschel/Planck mission to be launched in 2009. The HFI is a multicolor focal plane which consists of 52 bolometers operated at 100 mK. Each bolometer is mounted to a feedhorn-filter assembly which defines one of six frequency bands centered between 100-857 GHz. Four detectors in each of five bands from 143-857 GHz are coupled to both linear polarizations and thus measure the total intensity. In addition, eight detectors in each of four bands (100, 143, 217, and 353 GHz) couple only to a single linear polarization and thus provide measurements of the Stokes parameters, Q and U, as well as the total intensity. The measured noise equivalent power (NEP) of all detectors is at or below the background limit for the telescope and time constants are a few ms, short enough to resolve point sources as the 5 to 9 arc min beams move across the sky at 1 rpm

    Are GIS-modelled routes a useful proxy for the actual routes followed by commuters?

    Active commuting offers the potential to increase physical activity among adults by being built into daily routines. Characteristics of the route to work may influence propensity to walk or cycle. Geographic information system (GIS) software is often used to explore this by modelling routes between home and work. However, if the validity of modelled routes depends on the mode of travel used, studies of environmental determinants of travel may be biased. We aimed to understand how well modelled routes reflect those actually taken, and what characteristics explain these differences. We compared modelled GIS shortest path routes with actual routes measured using QStarz BT-Q1000X Global Positioning System (GPS) devices in a free-living sample of adults working in Cambridge and using varying travel modes. Predictors of differences, according to length and percentage overlap, between the two route sets were assessed using multilevel regression models and concordance coefficients. The 276 trips, made by 51 participants, were on average 27% further than modelled routes, with an average geographical overlap of 39%. However, predictability of the route depended on travel mode. For route length, there was moderate-to-substantial agreement for journeys made on foot and by bicycle. Route overlap was lowest for trips made by car plus walk (22%). The magnitude of difference depended on other journey characteristics, including travelling via intermediate destinations, distance, and use of busy roads. In conclusion, GIS routes may be acceptable for distance estimation and to explore potential routes, particularly active commuting. However, GPS should be used to obtain accurate estimates of environmental contexts in which commuting behaviour actually occurs.     Environmental determinants of active travel in youth: a review and framework for future research.

    BACKGROUND: Many youth fail to meet the recommended guidelines for physical activity. Walking and cycling, forms of active travel, have the potential to contribute significantly towards overall physical activity levels. Recent research examining the associations between physical activity and the environment has shown that environmental factors play a role in determining behaviour in children and adolescents. However, links between the environment and active travel have received less attention. METHODS: Twenty four studies were identified which examined the associations between the environment (perceived or objectively measured) and active travel among youth aged 5-18 years. Findings were categorised according to the location of the environmental measure examined; attributes of the neighbourhood, destination and the route between home and destination. RESULTS: Results from the reviewed studies indicated that youth active travel is positively associated with social interactions, facilities to assist active travel and urban form in the neighbourhood as well as shorter route length and road safety en-route. A conceptual framework is presented which highlights the associations between active travel behaviours and environmental factors, drawing upon both existing and hypothesised relationships. CONCLUSION: We provide a review of the available literature and present a novel theoretical framework that integrates the environment into the wider decision making process around travel choices for children and adolescents.
