Determination of absorption length of CO2 and high power diode laser radiation for ordinary Portland cement
The laser beam absorption lengths of CO2 and a high power diode laser (HPDL) radiation for the ordinary Portland cement (OPC) surface of concrete have been determined. By employing Beer-Lambert’s law the absorption lengths for concrete of CO2 and a HPDL radiation were 470±22 μm and
177±15 μm respectively

The Introduction Of Management By Objectives Into the Buchanan, Michigan, Seventh-day Adventist Church
The most urgent concern of the twentieth-century church is building an effective working team composed of pastor and laymen (or lay people) that will be responsive to the commission of carrying the gospel to the world. Methods must be discovered so that intentional pastors can help bring intentional congregations into being. In the context of management by objectives, self-assessment and goal setting may be the means by which intentional congregations are created. If this is true, the pastor needs to know how to apply the concept of management by objectives to his ministry.
To develop guidelines for the introduction of a system of management by objectives into the local church, models have been studied and literature surveyed in the areas of (1 ) theology of the church as an institution in need of management, (2 ) management by objectives in modern profit organizations, (3) management by objectives in non-profit organizations. In addition, surveys were conducted among members of one congregation to discover the degree of change that could be attributed to the introduction into the church of management by objectives.
The study of Scripture reveals that the church is an institution in need of organization and management. Literature in the management field was found to be rich in sound theoretical principles that can be adapted to effective management of the church. The management-by-objectives plan introduced into the Buchanan, Michigan, Seventh-day Adventist church sought to implement these principles arid ideals into the everyday life of the church members. The interest and participation of the congregation suggest that the same program could be used with some modification in other congregations. Some areas should be expanded and others shortened or adjusted to include additional strategies. An oral and written survey conducted among the members of the congregation showed generally favorable responses to the facilitative style of church management which is a broad management-by-objectives concept. Church growth, increased attendance, and improved stewardship each attest to the favor with which the project was accepted by the congregation.
While a new pastor naturally effects some changes in a congregation, the introduction of a new well-developed plan of management into the church effects greater and more long-range changes. The employment of modified objectives and goals each year using the principles of management by objectives will help the congregation become a better witness to the community in which it lives, and in the process the congregation and pastor become united by their common goals. There was an enthusiastic response when sixty members of the Buchanan congregation met to evaluate the 1978 program and set their goals for 1979. In this meeting laymen led in the goal-setting process and the pastor served as secretary

Using acoustic indices in ecology : guidance on study design, analyses and interpretation
TBL was supported by Leverhulme Trust, research grant number RPG-2020-160; the Lorentz Centre, Leiden, The Netherlands; and UKAN+. AE and OM were supported by UKAN+.The rise of passive acoustic monitoring and the rapid growth in large audio datasets is driving the development of analysis methods that allow ecological inferences to be drawn from acoustic data. Acoustic indices are currently one of the most widely applied tools in ecoacoustics. These numerical summaries of the sound energy contained in digital audio recordings are relatively straightforward and fast to calculate but can be challenging to interpret. Misapplication and misinterpretation have produced conflicting results and led some to question their value. To encourage better use of acoustic indices, we provide nine points of guidance to support good study design, analysis and interpretation. We offer practical recommendations for the use of acoustic indices in the study of both whole soundscapes and individual taxa and species, and point to emerging trends in ecoacoustic analysis. In particular, we highlight the critical importance of understanding the links between soundscape patterns and acoustic indices. Acoustic indices can offer insights into the state of organisms, populations, and ecosystems, complementing other ecological research techniques. Judicious selection, appropriate application and thorough interpretation of existing indices is vital to bolster robust developments in ecoacoustics for biodiversity monitoring, conservation and future research.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
SKA Deep Polarization and Cosmic Magnetism
Deep surveys with the SKA1-MID array offer for the first time the opportunity
to systematically explore the polarization properties of the microJy source
population. Our knowledge of the polarized sky approaching these levels is
still very limited. In total intensity the population will be dominated by
star-forming and normal galaxies to intermediate redshifts (), and
low-luminosity AGN to high redshift. The polarized emission from these objects
is a powerful probe of their intrinsic magnetic fields and of their magnetic
environments. For redshift of order 1 and above the broad bandwidth of the
mid-bands span the Faraday thick and thin regimes allowing study of the
intrinsic polarization properties of these objects as well as depolarization
from embedded and foreground plasmas. The deep field polarization images will
provide Rotation Measures data with very high solid angle density allowing a
sensitive statistical analysis of the angular variation of RM on critical
arc-minute scales from a magnetic component of Large Scale Structure of the
Universe.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures; to appear as part of 'Cosmic Magnetism' in

Integrated Polarization of Sources at lambda ~1m and New Rotation Measure Ambiguities
We present an analysis of the polarization of compact radio sources from six
pointings of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) at 350 MHz with
35% coverage in lambda^2. After correcting for the off-axis instrumental
polarization with a simple analytical model, only a small number of 585 strong
sources have significant polarizations at these wavelengths. The median
depolarization ratio from 1.4 GHz for the strongest sources is <0.2,
reinforcing the likelihood that radio galaxies are found in magnetized
environments, even outside of rich clusters. Seven sources with significant 350
MHz polarization were selected for a more in-depth Faraday structure analysis.
We fit the observed values Q/I and U/I as a function of lambda^2 using both a
depolarizing screen and two component models. We also performed RM
Synthesis/Clean and standard fitting of polarization angle vs. lambda^2. We
find that a single rotation measure (RM), as found using polarization angle
fitting or simple screen models, commonly provides a poor fit when the
solutions are translated back into Q, U space. Thus, although a single
"characteristic" rotation measure may be found using these techniques, the
Faraday structure of the source may not be adequately represented. We also
demonstrate that RM Synthesis may yield an erroneous Faraday structure in the
presence of multiple, interfering RM components, even when cleaning of the
Faraday spectrum is performed. We briefly explore the conditions under which
rotation measures and Faraday structure results can be reliable. Many
measurements in the literature do not meet these criteria; we discuss how these
influence the resulting scientific conclusions and offer a prescription for
obtaining reliable RMs.Comment: 26 pages, 24 figures. Published in The Astronomical Journa
Discovery of Millisecond Pulsars in the Globular Cluster Omega Centauri
The globular cluster Omega Centauri is the most massive and luminous cluster
in the Galaxy. The -ray source FL8Y J1326.74729 is coincident with
the core of the cluster, leading to speculation that hitherto unknown radio
pulsars or annihilating dark matter may be present in the cluster core. Here we
report on the discovery of five millisecond pulsars in Omega Centauri following
observations with the Parkes radio telescope. Four of these pulsars are
isolated with spin periods of 4.1, 4.2, 4.6 and 6.8 ms. The fifth has a spin
period of 4.8 ms and is in an eclipsing binary system with an orbital period of
2.1 hours. Deep radio continuum images of the cluster centre with the
Australian Telescope Compact Array reveal a small population of compact radio
sources making it likely that other pulsars await discovery. We consider it
highly likely that the millisecond pulsars are the source of the -ray
emission. The long-term timing of these pulsars opens up opportunities to
explore the dynamics and interstellar medium of the cluster.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical

Reducing time in acute hospitals: A stepped-wedge randomised control trial of a specialist palliative care intervention in residential care homes
Background: Care home residents are frequently transferred to hospital, rather than provided with appropriate and timely specialist care in the care home. Aim: To determine whether a model of care providing specialist palliative care in care homes, called Specialist Palliative Care Needs Rounds, could reduce length of stay in hospital. Design: Stepped-wedge randomised control trial. The primary outcome was length of stay in acute care (over 24-h duration), with secondary outcomes being the number and cost of hospitalisations. Care homes were randomly assigned to cross over from control to intervention using a random number generator; masking was not possible due to the nature of the intervention. Analyses were by intention to treat. The trial was registered with ANZCTR: ACTRN12617000080325. Data were collected between 1 February 2017 and 30 June 2018. Setting/participants: 1700 residents in 12 Australian care homes for older people. Results: Specialist Palliative Care Needs Rounds led to reduced length of stay in hospital (unadjusted difference: 0.5 days; adjusted difference: 0.22 days with 95% confidence interval: −0.44, −0.01 and p = 0.038). The intervention also provided a clinically significant reduction in the number of hospitalisations by 23%, from 5.6 to 4.3 per facility-month. A conservative estimate of annual net cost-saving from reduced admissions was A1.3 m; UK£0.98 m). Conclusion: The model of care significantly reduces hospitalisations through provision of outreach by specialist palliative care clinicians. The data offer substantial evidence for Specialist Palliative Care Needs Rounds to reduce hospitalisations in older people approaching end of life, living in care homes
