Barrens Memoir by John Timon, C.M. (1861)
John Timon gives his account of Congregationâs development in the United States from the missionâs beginning until 1847. The narrative is largely focused on Timonâs own work and ends when he becomes bishop of Buffalo, New York. He recounts the growth of the foundation at the Barrens, his mission trips with Jean-Marie Odin in the surrounding area, and their 1824 trip through Arkansas. He recalls many conversions, including those of condemned men, his successful public defenses of Catholicism against anti-Catholic Protestant ministers, and the acquisition of the Congregationâs property and foundation of the parish in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Much attention is paid to the work of Odin and Joseph Rosati. Timonâs efforts as the American provincial and as prefect apostolic of Texas are also included
Simulation and measurement of hts josephson heterodyne oscillator
We report continuing investigations into practical applications of the ac Josephson effect as the basis for a voltage-tunable radio-frequency oscillator. We have previously demonstrated experimentally that useful power levels (10 s of nW) and linewidths of a few kHz can be achieved in the heterodyne output from a High-Temperature-Superconducting Resistive SQUID (HTS-RSQUID) operating in the frequency range 1-50 MHz. Those results were achieved with 2-junction R-SQUIDs incorporating current-biased shunt resistors of a few micro-ohms. We have now modified the fabrication procedures, and adjusted the shunt resistors and bias current values so that higher frequencies can be achieved. The Josephson junctions are of step-edge type, rather than the bi-crystal type used in our earlier work. The step-edge technique permits much more flexibility in the geometrical lay-out and utilizes the more cost-effective single-crystal MgO substrates. In the present paper, we report numerical simulations and experimental measurements on these devices in the frequency range up to 2 GHz

The Shadow Side of the Vincentian Mission
John Prager reflects on the elements of the missionary vocation as well as its challenges, or as he calls it, âthe shadow side of the mission.â To be a missionary is to âaccompany Jesus into the world of the poor.â It requires insertion (the assumption of the poorâs lifestyle and the discarding of security), inculturation (entering into and learning from the worldview of the poor), and new evangelization (cooperating with Godâs love in many ways, especially ministering with the perspective of the poor in mind). Vulnerability, insecurity, doubts, confusion, fear, anger, and loneliness are all part of the shadow side of the mission. Prager offers general advice for dealing with these challenges and gives specific advice from the Vincentian tradition
Father Richardson: Some Incidents in his Early Life
Written by James Richardsonâs brother, this article gives highlights of the former superior generalâs life and career from childhood until 1968. Vincentian influence was present in his life from an early age. He attended a parochial school of the Daughters of Charity and a Vincentian high school, entering the Congregationâs novitiate in Perryville at the age of sixteen. He was later on the faculty of the seminary there. After that, Richardson became a faculty member and librarian of Saint Johnâs Seminary in Camarillo, California. He was also a canonist and won an important ecclesiastical trial during his time at Saint Johnâs. He filled many roles in California, becoming the first vice-provincial of the Vice-Province of Los Angeles
