Semiempirical Modeling of Reset Transitions in Unipolar Resistive-Switching based Memristors
We have measured the transition process from the high to low resistivity states, i.e., the reset process of resistive switching based memristors based on Ni/HfO2/Si-n+ structures, and have also developed an analytical model for their electrical characteristics. When the characteristic curves are plotted in the current-voltage (I-V) domain a high variability is observed. In spite of that, when the same curves are plotted in the charge-flux domain (Q-phi), they can be described by a simple model containing only three parameters: the charge (Qrst) and the flux (rst) at the reset point, and an exponent, n, relating the charge and the flux before the reset transition. The three parameters can be easily extracted from the Q-phi plots. There is a strong correlation between these three parameters, the origin of which is still under study

La bolsa serosa del psoas-ilíaco es una estructura anatómica bien definida, habitualmente
presente en el adulto. La comunicación entre dicha bolsa y la articulación de la cadera
se asocia frecuentemente a la coxartria. Presentamos un caso de agrandamiento de la
bolsa serosa del psoas ilíaco en una paciente de 69 años. El diagnóstico de sospecha se estableció
por la presencia de una masa inguinal y dolor de cadera. La ecografía y la T.A.C. confirmaron
el diagnóstico. Tras la punción de la bolsa y la instilación de corticoides hemos obtenido la
remisión de los síntomas.The iliopsoas bursa is a well-defined anatomic structure rarely absent in adults.
Communication existing between the iliopsoas bursa and the hip joint is frequently associated
with preexisting hip arthrosis. We present a case of iliopsoas bursa enlargement in a 69-yearold
woman. The diagnosis was suspected by the presence of inguinal mass and hip pain. Echography,
and later computed tomography confirmed it. The patient was successfully treated with
aspiration of cyst content and steroid instillation
Heparan sulphate mediates swine vesicular disease virus attachment to the host cell
Heparan sulphate (HS) has been found to serve as receptor for initial cell binding of numerous viruses. Different glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), including heparin and HS, were analysed for their ability to bind swine vesicular disease virus (SVDV), a picornavirus with close homology to human coxsackie B5 virus. Binding of SVDV was established by heparin-affinity chromatography. In addition, infection of IB-RS-2 epithelial porcine cells was inhibited by treating the virus with soluble HS, heparin, and chondroitin sulphate B (CS-B), as well as by enzymic digestion of cell surface GAGs. Analysis of the infection course showed that SVDV uses cellular HS for its binding to the cell surface and that this interaction occurs during attachment of the virus, prior to its internalization into the cell. Sequence analysis of SVDV variants selected for their lack of sensitivity to heparin inhibition in vitro led to the identification of two residues (A2135V and 11 266K) potentially involved in heparin/HS interaction. The location of these residues in a three-dimensional model shows that they are clustered in a well-exposed region of the capsid, providing a physical mechanism that could account for the heparin-binding phenotype
Presence of Adult Companion Goats Favors the Rumen Microbial and Functional Development in Artificially Reared Kids
Newborn dairy ruminants are usually separated from their dams after birth and fed on milk replacer. This lack of contact with adult animals may hinder the rumen microbiological and physiological development. This study evaluates the effects of rearing newborn goat kids in contact with adult companions on the rumen development. Thirty-two newborn goat kids were randomly allocated to two experimental groups which were reared either in the absence (CTL) or in the presence of non-lactating adult goats (CMP) and weaned at 7 weeks of age. Blood and rumen samples were taken at 5, 7, and 9 weeks of age to evaluate blood metabolites and rumen microbial fermentation. Next-generation sequencing was carried out on rumen samples collected at 7 weeks of age. Results showed that CTL kids lacked rumen protozoa, whereas CMP kids had an abundant and complex protozoal community as well as higher methanogen abundance which positively correlated with the body weight and blood beta-hydroxybutyrate as indicators of the physiological development. CMP kids also had a more diverse bacterial community (+132 ASVs) and a different structure of the bacterial and methanogen communities than CTL kids. The core rumen bacterial community in CMP animals had 53 more ASVs than that of CTL animals. Furthermore, the number of ASVs shared with the adult companions was over 4-fold higher in CMP kids than in CTL kids. Greater levels of early rumen colonizers Proteobacteria and Spirochaetes were found in CTL kids, while CMP kids had higher levels of Bacteroidetes and other less abundant taxa (Veillonellaceae, Cyanobacteria, and Selenomonas). These findings suggest that the presence of adult companions facilitated the rumen microbial development prior to weaning. This accelerated microbial development had no effect on the animal growth, but CMP animals presented higher rumen pH and butyrate (+45%) and ammonia concentrations than CTL kids, suggesting higher fibrolytic and proteolytic activities. CMP kids also had higher blood beta-hydroxybutyrate (+79%) and lower blood glucose concentrations (-23%) at weaning, indicating an earlier metabolic development which could favor the transition from pre-ruminant to ruminant after the weaning process. Further research is needed to determine the effects of this intervention in more challenging farm conditions
AVOCADO: A Virtual Observatory Census to Address Dwarfs Origins
Dwarf galaxies are by far the most abundant of all galaxy types, yet their
properties are still poorly understood -especially due to the observational
challenge that their intrinsic faintness represents. AVOCADO aims at
establishing firm conclusions on their formation and evolution by constructing
a homogeneous, multiwavelength dataset for a statistically significant sample
of several thousand nearby dwarfs (-18 < Mi < -14). Using public data and
Virtual Observatory tools, we have built GALEX+SDSS+2MASS spectral energy
distributions that are fitted by a library of single stellar population models.
Star formation rates, stellar masses, ages and metallicities are further
complemented with structural parameters that can be used to classify them
morphologically. This unique dataset, coupled with a detailed characterization
of each dwar's environment, allows for a fully comprehensive investigation of
their origins and to track the (potential) evolutionary paths between the

Experimental validation of deep-subwavelength diffusion by acoustic metadiffusers
International audienceAn acoustic metadiffuser is a subwavelength locally resonant surface relying on slow sound propagation. Its design consists of rigidly backed slotted panels, with each slit being loaded by an array of Helmholtz resonators (HRs). Due to the slow sound properties, the effective thickness of the panel can therefore be dramatically reduced when compared to traditional diffusers made of quarter-wavelength resonators. The aim of this work is to experimentally validate the concept of metadiffusers from the scattering measurements of a specific metadiffuser design, i.e., a Quadratic Residue Metadiffuser (QRM). The experimental results reported herein are in a close agreement with analytical and numerical predictions, therefore showing the potential of metadiffusers for controlling sound diffusion at very low frequencies
Potential benefits of melatonin in organ transplantation: a review
Organ transplantation is a useful therapeutic tool for patients with end-stage organ failure; however, graft rejection is a major obstacle in terms of a successful treatment. Rejection is usually a consequence of a complex immunological and nonimmunological antigen-independent cascade of events, including free radical-mediated ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). To reduce the frequency of this outcome, continuing improvements in the efficacy of antirejection drugs are a top priority to enhance the long-term survival of transplant recipients. Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a powerful antioxidant and ant-inflammatory agent synthesized from the essential amino acid L-tryptophan; it is produced by the pineal gland as well as by many other organs including ovary, testes, bone marrow, gut, placenta, and liver. Melatonin has proven to be a potentially useful therapeutic tool in the reduction of graft rejection. Its benefits are based on its direct actions as a free radical scavenger as well as its indirect antioxidative actions in the stimulation of the cellular antioxidant defense system. Moreover, it has significant anti-inflammatory activity. Melatonin has been found to improve the beneficial effects of preservation fluids when they are enriched with the indoleamine. This article reviews the experimental evidence that melatonin is useful in reducing graft failure, especially in cardiac, bone, otolaryngology, ovarian, testicular, lung, pancreas, kidney, and liver transplantation
The EMPIRE Survey: Systematic Variations in the Dense Gas Fraction and Star Formation Efficiency from Full-Disk Mapping of M51
We present the first results from the EMPIRE survey, an IRAM large program
that is mapping tracers of high density molecular gas across the disks of nine
nearby star-forming galaxies. Here, we present new maps of the 3-mm transitions
of HCN, HCO+, and HNC across the whole disk of our pilot target, M51. As
expected, dense gas correlates with tracers of recent star formation, filling
the "luminosity gap" between Galactic cores and whole galaxies. In detail, we
show that both the fraction of gas that is dense, f_dense traced by HCN/CO, and
the rate at which dense gas forms stars, SFE_dense traced by IR/HCN, depend on
environment in the galaxy. The sense of the dependence is that high surface
density, high molecular gas fraction regions of the galaxy show high dense gas
fractions and low dense gas star formation efficiencies. This agrees with
recent results for individual pointings by Usero et al. 2015 but using unbiased
whole-galaxy maps. It also agrees qualitatively with the behavior observed
contrasting our own Solar Neighborhood with the central regions of the Milky
Way. The sense of the trends can be explained if the dense gas fraction tracks
interstellar pressure but star formation occurs only in regions of high density

Role of color doppler imaging in early diagnosis and prediction of progression in glaucoma
This longitudinal and prospective study analyzes the ability of orbital blood flow measured by color Doppler imaging (CDI) to predict glaucoma progression in patients with glaucoma risk factors. Patients with normal perimetry but having glaucoma risk factors and patients in the initial phase of glaucoma were prospectively included in the study and divided, after a five-year follow-up, into two groups: “Progression” and “No Progression” based on the changes in the Moorfields regression analysis (MRA) classification of Heidelberg retina tomograph (HRT). An orbital CDI was performed in all patients and the parameters obtained were correlated with changes in HRT. A logistic discrimination function (LDF) was calculated for ophthalmic artery (OA) and central retinal artery (CRA) parameters. Receiver operating characteristics curves (ROC) were used to assess the usefulness of LDFs to predict glaucomatous progression. A total of 71 eyes were included. End-diastolic velocity, time-averaged velocity, and resistive index in the OA and CRA were significantly different ( ) between the Progression and No Progression groups. The area under the ROC curves calculated for both LDFs was of 0.695 (OA) and 0.624 (CRA). More studies are needed to evaluate the ability of CDI to perform early diagnosis and to predict progression in glaucoma in eyes
MCG+00-32-16: An Irregular Galaxy Close to the Lowest Redshift Absorber on the 3C 273 Line of Sight
MCG+00-32-16 is the galaxy closest in position-velocity space to the lowest
redshift Ly absorber along the line-of-sight to the quasar 3C 273. Its
projected separation is 204 (d/19 Mpc) kpc, where d is the distance from the
Milky Way to the galaxy, and the redshift difference is only 94 km/s; HI
1225+01 is slightly closer in projected separation to the absorber, but has a
greater redshift difference. We present HI synthesis array mapping and CCD
photometry in B and R for MCG+00-32-16. The HI disk is rotating in such a way
that the side of the galaxy closer to the sight-line to the quasar has the
larger velocity difference from the absorber. The absorber may be a ``failed
dwarf'' member of a poor galaxy group of which MCG+00-32-16 and HI 1225+01 are
