Drying Times: Integrating Citizen Science to Examine Survival of Florida Largemouth Bass in a Coastal Refuge Habitat
In aquatic systems refuge habitats increase resistance to drying events and are necessary for maintaining populations in disturbed environments. However, reduced water availability and altered flow regimes threaten the existence and function of these habitats. To test refuge function I conducted a capture-mark-recapture (CMR) study, integrating citizen science angler sampling into fisheries-independent methods. The objectives of this study were twofold: 1) To determine the contribution of citizen science anglers to improving CMR research, and 2.) to quantify apparent survival of Florida Largemouth Bass, Micropterus salmoides floridanus, in a coastal refuge habitat across multiple years of drying severity. The inclusion of angler sampling was determined to be an effective and feasible method for increasing capture probability. Apparent survival of Florida Bass varied among hydrologic periods with lowest survival when marshes functionally dried (\u3c 10 cm). Cracking the Code on Stem: A People Strategy for Nevada\u27s Economy
Nevada has in place a plausible economic diversification strategyâand itâs beginning to work. Now, the state and its regions need to craft a people strategy. Specifically, the state needs to boost the number of Nevadans who possess at least some postsecondary training in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or mathâthe so-called âSTEMâ disciplines (to which some leaders add arts and design to make it âSTEAMâ).
The moment is urgentâand only heightened by the projected worker needs of Tesla Motorsâ planned âgigafactoryâ for lithium-ion batteries in Storey County.
Even before the recent Tesla commitment, a number of the more high-tech industry sectors targeted by the stateâs new economic diversification strategy had begun to deliver significant growth. Most notable in fast-growing sectors like Business IT Ecosystems (as defined by the Governorâs Office for Economic Development) and large sectors like Health and Medical Services, this growth has begun to increase the demand in Nevada for workers with at least a modicum of postsecondary training in one or more STE M discipline.
However, there is a problem. Even though many available opportunities require no more than the right community college certificate, insufficient numbers of Nevadans have pursued even a little STEM training. As a result, too few Nevadans are ready to participate in the stateâs emerging STEM economy. The upshot: Without concerted action to prepare more Nevadans for jobs in STEM-intensive fields, skills shortages could limit growth in the stateâs most promising target industries and Nevadans could miss out on employment that offers superior paths to opportunity and advancement.
Which is the challenge this report addresses: Aimed at focusing the state at a critical moment, this analysis speaks to Nevadaâs STEM challenge by providing a new assessment of Nevadaâs STEM economy and labor market as well as a review of actions that leaders throughout the stateâwhether in the public, private, civic, or philanthropic sectorsâcan take to develop a workforce capable of supporting continued growth through economic diversification
Geographic Variation of Cirques on Iceland: Factors Influencing Cirque Morphology
Cirques are one of the most common glacial landforms in alpine settings. They also provide important paleoclimate information (e.g. Meierding 1984; Evans 2006). The purpose of this study is to fill in gaps in the climate record of Iceland by conducting a quantitative analysis of cirques in three regions in Iceland: Tröllaskagi, the East Fjords, and VestfirĂ°ir. Iceland, located in the center of the North Atlantic Ocean, contains many small glaciers, in addition to large ice caps. The glaciers on Iceland are particularly sensitive to variations in oceanic and atmospheric circulation (Andresen et al. 2005; GeirsdĂłttir et al., 2009; ĂlafsdĂłttir et al. 2010). Interactions Between Spermine-Derivatized Tentacle Porphyrins And The Human Telomeric DNA G-Quadruplex
G-rich DNA sequences have the potential to fold into non-canonical G-Quadruplex (GQ) structures implicated in aging and human diseases, notably cancers. Because stabilization of GQs at telomeres and oncogene promoters may prevent cancer, there is an interest in developing small molecules that selectively target GQs. Herein, we investigate the interactions of meso-tetrakis-(4-carboxysperminephenyl)porphyrin (TCPPSpm4) and its Zn(II) derivative (ZnTCPPSpm4) with human telomeric DNA (Tel22) via UV-Vis, circular dichroism (CD), and fluorescence spectroscopies, resonance light scattering (RLS), and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) assays. UV-Vis titrations reveal binding constants of 4.7 Ă 10ⶠand 1.4 Ă 10â· Mâ»Âč and binding stoichiometry of 2â4:1 and 10â12:1 for TCPPSpm4 and ZnTCPPSpm4, respectively. High stoichiometry is supported by the Job plot data, CD titrations, and RLS data. FRET melting indicates that TCPPSpm4 stabilizes Tel22 by 36 ± 2 °C at 7.5 eq., and that ZnTCPPSpm4 stabilizes Tel22 by 33 ± 2 °C at ~20 eq.; at least 8 eq. of ZnTCPPSpm4 are required to achieve significant stabilization of Tel22, in agreement with its high binding stoichiometry. FRET competition studies show that both porphyrins are mildly selective for human telomeric GQ vs duplex DNA. Spectroscopic studies, combined, point to end-stacking and porphyrin self-association as major binding modes. This work advances our understanding of ligand interactions with GQ DNA
Time for change: a new training programme for morpho-molecular pathologists?
The evolution of cellular pathology as a specialty has always been driven by technological developments and the clinical relevance of incorporating novel investigations into diagnostic practice. In recent years, the molecular characterisation of cancer has become of crucial relevance in patient treatment both for predictive testing and subclassification of certain tumours. Much of this has become possible due to the availability of next-generation sequencing technologies and the whole-genome sequencing of tumours is now being rolled out into clinical practice in England via the 100â000 Genome Project. The effective integration of cellular pathology reporting and genomic characterisation is crucial to ensure the morphological and genomic data are interpreted in the relevant context, though despite this, in many UK centres molecular testing is entirely detached from cellular pathology departments. The CM-Path initiative recognises there is a genomics knowledge and skills gap within cellular pathology that needs to be bridged through an upskilling of the current workforce and a redesign of pathology training. Bridging this gap will allow the development of an integrated 'morphomolecular pathology' specialty, which can maintain the relevance of cellular pathology at the centre of cancer patient management and allow the pathology community to continue to be a major influence in cancer discovery as well as playing a driving role in the delivery of precision medicine approaches. Reducing Perineal Tears: The Effect of Pushing Methods and Length of 2nd Stage of Labor
Objective: To evaluate the current literature evidence for the effects of either instructed or spontaneous pushing on perineal laceration incidence during delivery and the duration of second stage of labor.
Background: Lacerations (tears) of the perineum are common among women during delivery, increasing pain, infection risk, and other problems for women. Furthermore, prolonged second stage of labor has been shown a risk factor for lacerations. Pushing methods could have an effect on the incidence of lacerations and duration of second stage of labor.
Methods: Thorough search of online databases for the highest levels of evidence relating to the topic within the last 5 years.
Results: Spontaneous pushing versus instructed pushing method may decrease laceration incidence, according to limited evidence; however, other studies do not find this effect to be statistically significant. In addition, spontaneous pushing results in longer second stage of labor, having a possible indirect effect on laceration incidence.
Conclusion: Since no evidence strongly supports either pushing method as beneficial for decreasing lacerations, further research on this topic seems warranted. For now, either method may be accepted for use in current medical practice
The Role of Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in the Self-perceptions of Children with Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties
The present study compared the teacher ratings and self-perceptions of two groups of children with emotional and/or behavioural difficulties: a) Those with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and b) those with average or below average levels of hyperactivity and attention. Results showed that the ADHD group was rated more poorly by teachers in academic, social, and behavioural domains. This group also inflated their competency ratings in these domains relative to teacher report more than the comparison group.La prĂ©sente Ă©tude compare les diffĂ©rences entre la maniĂšre dont les enseignants perçoivent deux groupes dâenfants ayant des difficultĂ©s affectives et (ou) comportementales et celle dont les enfants se perçoivent eux-mĂȘmes : a) Un groupe souffrant du trouble dâhyperactivitĂ© avec dĂ©ficit de lâattention (TDAH) et b) Un groupe ayant des niveaux dâhyperactivitĂ© et dâattention moyens ou infĂ©rieurs Ă la moyenne. Stellar Populations and Star Cluster Formation in Interacting Galaxies with the Advanced Camera for Surveys
Pixel-by-pixel colour-magnitude and colour-colour diagrams - based on a
subset of the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys Early Release
Observations - provide a powerful technique to explore and deduce the star and
star cluster formation histories of the Mice and the Tadpole interacting
galaxies. In each interacting system we find some 40 bright young star clusters
(20 <= F606W (mag) <= 25, with a characteristic mass of ~3 x 10^6 Msun), which
are spatially coincident with blue regions of active star formation in their
tidal tails and spiral arms. We estimate that the main events triggering the
formation of these clusters occurred ~(1.5-2.0) x 10^8 yr ago. We show that
star cluster formation is a major mode of star formation in galaxy
interactions, with >= 35% of the active star formation in encounters occurring
in star clusters. This is the first time that young star clusters have been
detected along the tidal tails in interacting galaxies. The tidal tail of the
Tadpole system is dominated by blue star forming regions, which occupy some 60%
of the total area covered by the tail and contribute ~70% of the total flux in
the F475W filter (decreasing to ~40% in F814W). The remaining pixels in the
tail have colours consistent with those of the main disk. The tidally triggered
burst of star formation in the Mice is of similar strength in both interacting
galaxies, but it has affected only relatively small, spatially coherent areas.Comment: 23 pages in preprint form, 6 (encapsulated) postscript figures;

A Millimeter-scale Single Charged Particle Dosimeter for Cancer Radiotherapy
This paper presents a millimeter-scale CMOS 6464 single charged
particle radiation detector system for external beam cancer radiotherapy. A
11 diode measures energy deposition by a single charged
particle in the depletion region, and the array design provides a large
detection area of 512512 . Instead of sensing the voltage drop
caused by radiation, the proposed system measures the pulse width, i.e., the
time it takes for the voltage to return to its baseline. This obviates the need
for using power-hungry and large analog-to-digital converters. A prototype ASIC
is fabricated in TSMC 65 nm LP CMOS process and consumes the average static
power of 0.535 mW under 1.2 V analog and digital power supply. The
functionality of the whole system is successfully verified in a clinical 67.5
MeV proton beam setting. To our' knowledge, this is the first work to
demonstrate single charged particle detection for implantable in-vivo
dosimetry
