Introduction to Television is designed to familiarize students with the history and development of television in the United States and help students understand some of the factors impacting televisual media today. By the end of the semester, students will: Become familiar with the history and development of television in the United States. Gain a better understanding of the technologies behind televisual media. Form educated opinions of current TV topics. Understand the role of the FCC and the major regulatory acts. Understand basic ratings systems. Gain an appreciation of new developments in televisual media, such as social media, streaming media, mobile video and more. Work in teams to develop a Content Plan for a televisual production. Write a trade article on some current trend or problem in televisual media. Take a midterm and a final exam

Digital Publishing Workshop is a special topics course designed to give students a solid foundation in Web publishing, JavaScript and an introduction to app development. By the end of the semester, students will: Learn the basics of mobile app development strategies. Work in a team to research and produce a prototype for a new app. Participate in the Scripps Innovation Challenge. Learn the basics of HTML5 and CSS3. Learn the basics of JavaScript and JQuery Produce a new layout for the Zen Garden project. Produce an interactive photo slideshow with HTML5/CSS3. Produce a multimedia package with HTML5/CSS3. Learn how to give and receive constructive criticism

JOU 4001 Visual Storytelling Production

Visual Storytelling Production is designed to enhance the skills that students learned in Multimedia Production 1. By the end of the semester, students will: Understand some of the legal and ethical issues facing journalists and other communication professionals who work with digital tools on the Internet. Learn how to give and receive constructive criticism. Further their understanding of audio-visual production techniques. Improve their abilities to research multi-media news stories Produce an extended infographic on the class theme. Produce an audio slideshow on the class theme. Produce multi-source video with B-Roll on the class theme. Participate in a crowdsourced reporting project on King Tide Day. Produce a multimedia package on the class theme. Reimagining Econ. 101 – Indigenous, Buddhist, Jesuit, Secular Education

A basic econ course, because it is a foundation for informed citizenship, is a requirement in many liberal arts colleges. Historically, orthodox economic theory has heavily influenced this course. But this narrow and theoretical approach to economics is not particularly useful in addressing the glaring challenges of inequality and global warming or inspiring our students to engage in solutions to social problems. This paper presents some ideas for professors who, after exposing students to the content of mainstream economics, want to challenge students to question the foundational assumptions and the consumer culture they live in by exposing them to an interdisciplinary view of an economy populated by moral actors and embedded in a biosphere with limited resources

An ecosystem approach to public education and information at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida: 1992-1997: Final report

This project addressed a need for ecosystem management education of appropriate content and medium for audiences of Eglin Air Force Base, in northwestern Florida. The goal of this project was to better understand the various constituencies of Eglin Air Force Base and to develop effective methods of communication about Eglin's natural resources for those audiences. In a broader sense, this research sought to fulfill the need for a model of appropriate education in support of ecosystem management on public lands in the United States.
